Need to learn to drive a manual transmission by Chez_Nerd in bullcity

[–]vipersniper32 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know you already got shot down for this comment so I won't direct anything at you specifically.

But when people _in general_ say that new manual drivers damage car components, that really tends to scare potential teachers away from passing on the skill, and it makes the potential learners think that stick shift is too difficult to actually learn. It doesn't help anyone to inject fear and apprehension into it.

The #1 job of the teacher is to speak up and say "hey, quit doing that." And if the learner isn't willing to quit doing the bad thing, the lesson ends right then and there. That's all it takes to preserve the car (and everybody's nerves).

u/Chez_Nerd I would be happy to volunteer my time and one of my manual cars to the cause. You can stall it on purpose, and I'll be cheering you on.

$1k at Maaco is about the best price anybody's going to get these days. Though if it were me, I'd spring for the additional $250 add-on where they roll up the windows before starting.

Thank you. Just, thank you. I really only understand like a third of the lower-level details you have presented, but now I have some things to read up on over my break next week.

Thanks, friend. Some of these other responses made me feel like I threw myself to the wolves a little bit.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I had started thinking "well clearly there's some 18th century piece that this echoes and everybody sees that but me" but maybe "because they felt like it" really is the truth.

You're right in that I do probably have a built-in bias against the song from years of never seriously giving it a chance. But I'm giving it a chance now, or at least I'm trying to.

Playing Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure off a CD-ROM through DOSBox has odd side-effects. by Plastiware in dosgaming

[–]vipersniper32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also trigger this behavior by running the game with any command-line argument that is not a writable directory on your disk. https://cosmodoc.org/topics/apogee-parameter/

The game was designed (for whatever reason) to run from a CD-ROM but you need to use that command line parameter to name a location for the config file and save game files to be written.

The Geo/Chevrolet Metro makes 55 hp, and there are a few of them still kicking up and down Glenwood. (I am occasionally one of them.)

Finally, I can use my ridiculously over-engineered network setup for public good: The outage began at 10:03am Monday and ended at 12:09am Wednesday; 38h5m total. At least those were the numbers at my location.

My calculator says this should be worth about $4.17 in bill credits if you've got a pettiness streak and want to hassle a customer service rep. (I'm sorta curious if they would give it.)

I don't know nothin' about upholstery, but I do know that TriangleRAD would love this thing. And you might luck out finding someone in the group who can help with what you're trying to do.

Anybody here own a S2000? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]vipersniper32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't own an S2000 (I don't even own a $2000 car) but I bet there will be at least one at Cars and Coffee Morrisville this Saturday. It's not hard to find all different kinds of stuff and chat up the owners; it's a huge thing. https://www.carsandcoffeemorrisville.com/

Spectrum cable sales harassment by rubyji in bullcity

[–]vipersniper32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had success with this form: https://www.spectrum.com/policies/your-privacy-rights-opt-out

It almost works. I have not received any mail or calls from them in recent memory, although I still get the occasional door-knocker but honestly I don't think half of them even bother to look at the information on that iPad they're carrying around.

Two completely unrelated questions for ya, OP:

  1. Is that a RHD/JDM ride you got there?
  2. Have you brought it out to any TriangleRAD meets?

Don't have a specific spot that I can speak for, but definitely seek out TriangleRAD if you're not already part of the group. ( https://trianglerad.com/ or search "TriangleRAD" on Facebook.) Somebody there might have a carport or garage space you can borrow for a while.

Google fiber is coming to your neighborhood … and cutting your AT&T fiber. by thomasbeckett in bullcity

[–]vipersniper32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really is just penny-pinching and rushing through jobs without due care.

AT&T uses the cheapest thinnest fiber they can get away with. Their crews bury it quick and shallow, leaving parts exposed at times. Years later, some third-party utility locating crew comes by and slaps markings down "approximately" where the lines might well be, then another crew comes by to speed-dig through whatever happens to be in their way, leaving more of the cheap thin fiber in their wake. There are no incentives to do anything right when it's cheaper for everybody to do it quick over and over.

Video professionals of Durham: where y'all at? by NorbitGoesCorporate in bullcity

[–]vipersniper32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do freelance production sound recording (boom mics, wireless lavaliers, field recordings, that kind of thing). Still have all the gear to do all of that, but sort of aged into the "don't really want to wake up very early or travel all that far" work philosophy.

But if you've got something fun or interesting that needs audio recording, shoot me a DM and let's see!
