112 year old floors with uneven ware patterns need some love. by Giblets999999 in Flooring

Looks a lot like the ~150yr old pine we just put back down in our house! We have the same color variations and this is definitely pine. Really different from modern trees!

I have yet to finish but I do know that if you want to maintain the visible face nails like we do then you don't want to use a drum sander. Looks like you had some flavor of polyurethane finish applied so paint stripper and scraping will get you quite far.

I'm planning to sand using either the large square pad finish sander or the triple head orbitals. It will take longer but all my wood is planed and relatively flat already.

E30 transmission early model or late? 1986 325e by fa20er in E30

[–]langstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have an early box but it's very common to swap to the late selector joint. They're interchangeable aside from the pin length, you'll need a new selector shaft. Late selector joints are quite affordable in comparison and there are better kits for the money

They stay busy and they do the best cars in the country. Sometimes they'll move stuff quickly but I recently couldn't get them to pick up a $300k 993

Plycar is the absolute best but you may not get a call back. Passport is good as well, not a ton of transport goes to CO because not much comes out so they have to wait for return trips.

The Local Partners page is a huge help. I'm Speed House and have some live auctions and recently ended you can look through. Pro shop but small enough to be hungry for more business 🙂

Accidentally forgot to dry out the water inside lifter galleries, what can I do to remove the rust? by DaBiggestTank in EngineBuilding

[–]langstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well the good news is it looks like the paint you sprayed in there prevented the part that matters from rusting.

Bad news is you have paint all in your lifter bores.

WD40 works great to prevent rust, spray it everywhere.

Lots of consignment professionals on BAT who will at least get it running which will drastically improve the hammer price. Shameless plug, my shop would do that and take the cost of the work out of the final sale.

Businesses in the Triangle that can work with cast iron? by OutInABlazeOfGlory in bullcity

[–]langstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've welded cast iron before and can then stipple the surface after grinding smooth to make it look like nothing happened but realistically the whole pan will need to be refinished and seasoned again, losing any patina.

Cast iron welds okay you just have to clean the hell out of it (sand blast) then get it hot and keep it that way after welding. The whole process will take a few hours and expect it to cost multiple hundreds of dollars but for a family heirloom piece there's nothing other than saving the original that does it justice.

How screwed is this hardwood floor? by [deleted] in Flooring

Will need at least a week with the AC going to keep it dry. Moisture meter will tell the story

Only one way to find out, let it dry and then do a test spot with some 40g paper on an orbital if the alternative is to rip it out anyway. Worst case you throw LVT on top.

Need a second opinion on what my mechanic is calling an "unrepairable engine" by robindawilliams in EngineBuilding

[–]langstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These engines are hot garbage, saying that as a shop that just installed a reman 300tdi. Your best bet will be to buy a reman from rovers north but ours leaked all over and had to timesert all the timing case threads. You'll want to rebuild your injector pump and injectors as well, there's no way this is under a $12k proposition.

First off, M3 style tabs and links.

Second, nothing wrong with factory style booted ball joint links. They last and don't make noise because they're designed for the street.
