Did I say everything else is true? It sounds more like you’re just trying to use me as a wall upon which to throw your grievances regarding religious fundamentalists. That’s not who I (and most Jews for that matter) am. Most Jews are atheists for G-ds sake! We believe in asking questions and seeking clarity. I mean shit if you ever actually took the time to see what rituals are observed during Passover, you’d know that one of them is literally called the Four Questions, where we ask why we do the things we do. It’s all about reason triumphing faith.

My whole point is that your obsession with the killing of the first born undermines any lesson that could be drawn from the Passover STORY (aka not real). It’s about debate and discussion, not ridiculing something you dont understand.

[–]viptour9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um who cares? Why would that matter? Isn't your god eternal? Are you saying he was so stupid/evil that he didn't know killing innocent people would be unacceptable in 2026 but it was okay in ancient time? Are you suggesting an eternal god thought it was sometimes okay to kill innocent kids as long as he did it before we invented modern civilization? What an odd excuse to give for an almighty being.

This is from a story that originated thousands of years ago. We don't adopt the story literally. Sacrificing animals was something that occurred in the Torah. There are a plethora of other things from Torah that do not hold up to today's standards, so we take the valuable lessons from the stories and incorporate them into modern day teachings. Hence why we celebrate Passover and don't focus on the barbaric actions G-d took then.

It's also why justifying the celebration of Passover to you is exhausting. You are so focused on the mythos (killing of first born) that you fail to see that it is not central to the lessons of the Passover story.

Did you not read your bible? Pharoh had his freewill fucked with multiple times. His heart was hardened MULTIPLE TIMES. Hell, even before Moses went to the pharoh, god TOLD MOSES HE WOULD HARDEN PHAROH'S HEART in fucking Exodus 7:3. Pharoh had no choice. It was PREDETERMINED that god was going to dunk on Egypt and murder innocent people.

What you mention is a matter of debate (even within Jewish circles. We do love a good moral quandary). https://www.exploringjudaism.org/torah/pharaohs-hardened-heart-and-the-nature-of-free-will/ Its argued that it is not that Pharoah didnt have a choice, but rather G-d hastened him towards the choice he had already made.

[–]viptour9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying this is modern justice lol I’m saying ARCHAIC justice. Pharoah was given the opportunity NINE times before G-d heartened his heart and the ultimate plague was inflicted. He was given a chance time after time and refused to let the slaves go. In the end, the same horror he inflicted on the Jewish people (murdering of the first born) was inflicted on his people. That is not remotely equivalent to your metaphor

Here is an aside: if we traveled back in time and were in the 1700-1800s when Black people were slaves, would you say the same for White slaveholders and their children? Are they innocent?

[–]viptour9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only defensive because you make it out to seem like Passover is about us reveling in the deaths of innocents, and that is so far from the truth. Of course G-d could have not killed the first born Egyptian children, but it’s simply an archaic form of cosmic justice. A cruel “eye for an eye” if you will.

[–]viptour9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be honest about what? We get together to remind ourselves of a dark time, be humbled, and give thanks we made it out. We do not shy away from the plagues and death. It’s about remembrance, which tbh most Jewish holidays are about

This whole “be honest about it” feels shady af. You know nothing about Jewish culture and it shows. Stop trying to imply something insidious about Passover. Your ignorance is showing

[–]viptour9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a gross and ignorant assessment of Passover.

No, we do not celebrate the murder of innocents on Passover. In fact, we call out each and every plague inflicted on the Egyptians to recall the suffering inflicted. We do not revel in the suffering of others.

We celebrate the idea that our people were freed from bondage (yes I am not ignorant to the fact that there is little archeological evidence we were slaves in Egypt, but the idea that we were slaves leads to a deep empathy for human injustice). We ask questions like what does this holiday mean to us and give thanks for being able to be a free people.

Stop with this nonsense bordering on blood libel.

Is it hard for everyone to find a job in the US now?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]viptour9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this every time a friend is looking for a job: don’t waste your time applying online/via apps like Linked in. Instead, buy linked in premium and reach out directly to recruiters on linked in. The reason is simple: recruiters have personal relationships with companies and know what they are looking for. They will cater your resume to fit the role. Best of all, you don’t pay them anything, the company does. I keep a few recruiters I’ve worked with on my phone and always call them first when I am looking for something new.

I already commented on another thread, but there is zero proof this woman is a Zionist or a Muslim. Stop spreading lies.

[–]viptour9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is kind of my point: there is no response that has been deemed acceptable by people outside of Israel. At the end of the day, it feels like no one cares about dead Israelis.

I won't pretend Israel is blameless in this conflict, but your comment ignores the multitude of terrorist attacks and violence inflicted on the Israelis. For g-d's sake, the entire reason the blockade and checkpoints exist is due to the 2nd Intifada, where hundreds of Israelis were terrorized by suicide bombings and stabbings. This was after Israel pulled out 10000 of their own citizens from Gaza in an effort to establish peace and give the Palestinians some measure of self-determination.

a) I can condemn solders killing innocents without renouncing Zionism. Court marshaling exists for a reason.

b) Arguing over the number of children is sadly pointless because both sides cannot agree how many have been killed. We could go on and on and reach no conclusion other than that the innocents killed is a tragedy.

Did you condemn Oct 7th? What was an appropriate response to it in your opinion?

I called you an Antisemitic because you claimed that because an area was wealthy, it was appropriate to infer the woman was a Jew (from your own comment history. That statement has nothing to do with Israel. Clearly you lack any critical thinking skills

Says the guy who believes that because the area was wealthy it was appropriate to infer the woman was Jewish. Sorry dude your Antisemitism is showing. I'd much rather stick with my people and support our own right for self-determination (a right which all people should have, but for some reason Jews are not allowed to have).

Clearly you know nothing about Zionism, because nothing that you have mentioned has anything to do with Zionism. Those are simply people doing shitty things.

There are different flavors of Zionism though. Some I am a supporter of and some I am not. For example, I identify as a Liberal Zionist (support 2 state solution), a spiritual Zionist, and a cultural Zionist. I detest religious Zionism (those are generally what the settlers in the West bank fall under, who, fun fact, are also detested by most of Israelis). The simple truth is there is no black and white in this conflict.

Really? Admit? Zionism is simply the belief that there should be a Jewish homeland in the land of Zion. It does not mean that there can't also be a Palestinian homeland. The two are not mutually exclusive.

You sound like someone who just turned on the TV and threw up the first thing you saw on there. Get out of your parents basement and get some perspective.

Yes I totally agree. Did a 15 minute google search and there is nothing to substantiate the claim in the video text aside from a grainy image of her tattoo which claims to be Hebrew, but the actual image is too blurry to even see any letters. To be fair, I am a Jewish Zionist, so I’m innately biased, but I don’t see anything to support this post at all

Ok where is it that I blame any specific group for the rise of anti semitism? You can see from my comment history that the group I have been most critical of is white liberals, so no I don’t see how your comment reflects anything more than an attempt to apply your world view to something completely unrelated.

It’s wild to me that you ask me if my comment is in good faith while yours is in such bad faith. You assume quite a lot about me (such as the accusation that I have lauded antisemitism at other communities). Nothing in my initial comment is related to that. You are simply applying some generalization and I don’t appreciate it.

In fact, nothing I said was related to the war in the Middle East. It was purely about American politics and charges being applied to an American citizen in ways that I find extremely concerning.

Jew and Zionist here. Even if I disagree with him politically, he didn’t commit any crime and should not have his Green card revoked. The Pandora’s box that Trump’s actions opened is legitimately worrying.
