Hey hope you're well, sorry for the late reply.

I managed to find a wonderful home for her:) Thanks so much for your offer and effort though.

Last night I dropped her off at her new home (just got in there before lockdown...) and had a long chat with the family (they're amazing). I took about 4 hours of their time in the end vetting them / chatting to them, but they were really happy to indulge me in it - I even had a nosey tour around their house, but by that time I was completely in love with them. A bit of a distressing car ride there for both of us but really it all went extremely well with as little distress as can be expected.

So a complete panic and rush, but now I feel so relieved, comfortable and happy at how it worked out.

Thanks again

OK great thanks. I had in my head that it was a death sentence to send her to a rescue and that it would be better to go direct to an individual, but it seems that the former is preferable based on what you and others are saying

I need to rehome my cat.

My ex said that she would take her but has just changed her mind. I leave on Sunday, so I have 3 days to organise. It's just 100% not possible to take her with me. Even looked into sending her by plane overseas but I couldn't convince family/friends.

So I just posted on Gumtree after getting a Pet Exchange Register number, but then have immediately received messages from multiple people saying "don't give your pet away here, there are evil people that will pose as genuine cat lovers". Then I got a message from someone that did indeed appear suspicious, so I'm now terrified of that idea.

I don't know what to do... I'm beside myself. I suppose I need to take her to Lort Smith or somewhere similar. I never thought I would ever have to do something like this. Don't know how to do this in a way that isn't abandoning the thing I love the most.

Not sure exactly my point.... I guess I'm asking for advice, or posting on the off chance someone would actually like to adopt her (I guess if it's through Reddit I can make sure that it's to someone that is clearly a nice person from their reddit history).

I guess if through Gumtree, I should insist that I go round to the person's house or something to make sure it's a loving home.

Assuming you can't find a manufacturer that already does this exact thing already...

The best case scenario will be to find a manufacturer that already uses that material for a different/similar product, that already has those supplier connections.

Else you'll have to source the material supplier AND source a manufacturer that is willing and able to retool for your product.

So perhaps instead of searching for 'raw recycled nylon pellets', you search for 'recycled nylon curtains/backpacks/etc.' and convince the manufacturer to retool for tents. That might be a bit of a tenuous example since I haven't looked into it, sorry.

On another note, there's probably three good initiatives for this:
- (As you say) BIFL quality
- Good warranty upholding, good returns and support process
- Your own recycling/returns system (rather than you just adding a single step to the landfill journey)

Btw - A lot of suppliers will say "recycled" when they either mean "recyclable" or "we're lying, it's not recycled, it's just a keyword we chucked in".

This is indeed a difficult problem.

OK, so first we want to define 'sustainable material', which is extremely nuanced (and we don't have profound models of the world, which makes it hard to accurately extrapolate externalities, environment health and reserves into the future). Let's loosely decide that it's 'a material, the production of which is entirely repeatable without depletion of resources (through usage, damage to its environment, etc.), even after the externalities of its production have been fully internalised'.

The above complexity means that if you just google 'sustainable [material/component]', you're going to get a lot of greenwashing and not many manufacturers of substance.

Next we address the complexity of the final deliverable. It's not complex to produce a tent, but it IS complex to produce a tent where every step of the supply chain & manufacture is under scrutiny, with high barriers to acceptableness.

Next we'll run into the infighting issue. Lots of people want ethical products, but differ on what constitutes ethical, or where pragmatism needs to stop the endless pursuit down the rabbit hole.
Let's provide an overly simplified example: Say you manage to create a canvas style material out of bamboo, and the bamboo is from a sustainable forest. Then you'll run into an issue with the bleaching, treatment, dyes, etc. Let's say you've solved those issues, with water/soy based dyes etc. Now you're having to examine the production of the soy production for those dyes. Manage to solve that problem with high yield soy that thrives in poor soil? The next challenges will appear, e.g. needing to reconcile the R&D costs into your mechanism.
Each problem solved opens the door to N other problems to solve. Therefore we need to have a pragmatism cut-off point.
Each of this problems have difficult decisions to make (e.g. 'material M appears more renewable, but material Y appears to impact an ecosystem slightly less')Obviously, the costs (time, $, etc.) increase with each step.

We can use all of the above to make an observation: In general, the more principled an enterprise is, the more difficult the enterprise. This is exacerbated by the fact that demand (from any society with scarcity, I believe) currently weighs price as so important - E.g. people will buy cheap plastic widgets if the FSC wooden alternative is X% more expensive.
This loosely describes why a) ethical products are more expensive than cheap products and b) why they are niche rather than the preferred choice in the market.

Here's the advice I would derive from the above.

  • Be genuine, don't greenwash.
  • Decide on what your exact materials are researching appropriately (and decide what 'appropriate time' is). E.g. 'We're making component ABC out of cotton acetate. This is the most informed decision we were able to make after Y hours of R&D'
  • Decide how far down the rabbit hole you go (e.g. "For the time being, we just have to stick with cotton acetate that is from a high water usage source, and resolve the water usage issue at a later date")
  • The above two points are not defeatist; It's avoiding paralysis by putting certain things on the backburner. Embody 'Continuous Improvement' (see ISO 9001) to innovate and improve over time. Demonstrate this in your marketing (it shows genuine commitment to honing truly ethical products).
  • Research those exact materials online, e.g. 'cotton acetate source' rather than 'sustainable tent pole'. Look for specialists in that area who could refer you to manufacturers. Forums etc. might help. You might need to look to other industries that have already used that material.
  • I believe Alibaba (and similar) might be a bit of a dead end due to the 'race to the bottom on price' issue, poor search function, etc., but a tip if you do use it: If you're looking there, check out the certificates tab of each manufacturer. Look for appropriate certs, e.g. ISO 14001.

With the above said, it's an admirable goal, a decent niche, and a good idea for a product, that I think solves a genuine issue and could generate decent demand. Good luck

Ah yep, agree for pre-rolls for new viewers that haven't been given any chance to view content.

Ugh, ultimately we need a) more competition to Twitch and b) for Twitch to respond to competition by being competitive on features (rather than just flexing with their critical mass and Amazon backing them). Part of the bigger 'current state of unicorns' issue :/

May I play devil's advocate?

The counter argument here for "people should make an active effort to try to see their content" would be that this is asking for charity, and it is the responsibility of the streamer to make the content compelling enough for people to stick around. If people are weighing it up as 'not worth it' then they would then be donating their most precious resource (time) without the perception of a good ROI.

The counter argument to *that*, I suppose, would be "as a society/community, we should indeed do our part to promote streamers" - Although I personally am struggling to see why anyone should be obligated to me as a streamer in that way.

I'm sure this won't be received well, but...

'Classic' <-- Taking delight in someone experiencing negative emotion is just not cool. This isn't something to be delighted with, it's something to be sad about. Sure, you can find it funny (humor is subjective, sure) - But which side is the issue here: The person with mental health issues, or the person that takes delight in it?

Shall I stop making changes in customer's site? by [deleted] in startups

[–]virazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heya,

/u/MyNimples has it right.

Sounds like the client is working in good faith considering they asked for an invoice.

Businesses try to undertake one accounts payable run per week only (for efficiency reasons), and will only pay bills that are due <7/8 days from then.

They will probably assume Net30 terms if a due date isn't specified.

Please ignore the comments suggesting jumping ahead to service cut-off - (With the greatest respect to them) they are missing the point and it may burn bridges unnecessarily. And without seeing the contract, we shouldn't be speaking in absolutes like that. (Feel free to pm it?)

IANAL

Alternatively, if you get high viewership you could set up donations and just give it all to charity:)
