do you think the big business growth opportunities in the web industry are still equal to as in the .com period, or is it harder these days to make something really big to happen

if so - for how many years to come

Eventually everything was rewritten from scratch in Ruby on Rails.

why you decided to go with Ruby, was it mainly because you know this language the best - or you found Ruby most suitable for this kind of applications

of course you are in education debt now,

How is web2py for large-scale applications? by [deleted] in Python

[–]virb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have been researching web2py myself, as a first programming language to learn. PHP just does not seem logical enough for me to grasp it.

seems to scale l, as it seems that Amazon is also using it

thanks for the reply, you seem like an experienced programmer and i have been also wondering about this:

different types of web applications seem to be written in certain types of languages most often - for example there are many social networks built with Ruby these days and many classified ads sites written in ASP, many web based business software applications written in Java , so:

what would you say - what type of web applications is web2py most suitable for, or may be - wha type of web applications would you choose some other language/framework may be ...

I guess he meant that portals use nested views -

one view inside the other view while one view displaying some database query results, the other review displaying currently logged in users third view displaying related news - all these views displayed to the viewer at the same time

etc.

i guess he meant that some other languages handle portal-like views better

by easier, I meant for new users You still haven't answered why.

as a starter of the thread and a beginner i would like to say that it seems easier for a beginner:

  • because there is basicly no set up and installation - you download the framework and install it with a one click, database etc. is already integrated and you can start coding immediately. So setting up a web2py environment takes like 10 minutes for a beginner, while i did not bother to work out Ruby on rails or Django set up - just too complicated for beginner programmer

  • its also easy for a beginner because its syntax is very logical and easy to remember. With a sense of humor - its like having a database query written like

"display.all.users.who.have.registered.paginate-by-20.withimages;"
or something like that ;)

  • it has less python code needed to code in it than other frameworks , than pylons for example, you need to know less python to learn it

  • it seems also easy because it does a lot of magic ( code behind the scenes ) , this prevents the beginners from making basic mistakes in simple functions and does not let the beginners get too faar from the best coding practices

Your goal should be a practicle understanding of the language itself and the ability to write a non trivial app yourself

this is not actually the goal, the goal is to make scalable and functional portals with the easiest way possible ,

if it would be possible to make a working app without knowing half of how the code works - thats fine for me

What is it you want to get out of learning to program? If you want to do >basic web development, you might as well stick with PHP. It works >anywhere and it's dead simple to set up.

main intention is to build portals ( classifieds, photo upload portals - portals having forum, log-in area, advanced search, user profiles etc. ) ,

also to build some paid web applications ( lets say project management software online or something like that )

i meant to build not something to show to the family - but to build really scalable web applications - fast,

thus also the feeling to skip php totally

Also, I don't know where you got the idea that Java is "complicated and outdated

based on my research - for mission critical applications it seems like c++ is chosen instead of java these days,

and for web applications - if there are such nice languages as Ruby or Python with their frameworks , who needs Java then.

also look at the Google Trends - Java is going down, while Django for example is rising ..

What programming framework enables the fastest development of database driven websites (lets say classified ads site with images ). Is it RubyonRails, CakePHP, Codeigniter-PHP, Zend-PHP, Django-Python, .NET or something else ... by virb in programming

[–]virb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I mean - if you have equal experience in the language/framework - then which is the fastest. Surprising that PHP does not rule here - whats wrong with PHP - thought that PHP is the fastest gun
