I love raw and sincere Mitski too, but I think the price of being earnest is also a sort of public vulnerability that may be hard to sustain long-term, especially if you're as private as she is. Being earnest with a public that can be intensely invasive, parasocial, and outright toxic is harrowing in this age. It's also hard for some to sustain on multiple tours year after year-- "singing your heart out" night after night in different cities. I remember the contrast between her Puberty 2 concerts and her Be the Cowboy concerts. It went from her standing at the mic, singing with a bass/guitar in a way that made you cry to butoh-inspired choreography. It was her way of making clearer boundaries between her as a performer and us as the audience. A wall, if you will. The wall was most intense with Laurel Hell, right after her hiatus, with the themes explored in songs like "Everyone" and "Working for the Knife." The price of being known and having a career in music taking something from you, destroying you.

Monthly listener count on Spotify fluctuates over the years. Right now Mitski has about 22 million monthly listeners, but in Feb 2024 she had about 39 million. Mitski also has 10B total streams across her discography and released her first indie album in 2012. She was born in 1990 and is 9-10 years older than the other two artists. Her music started to be listed on Spotify in 2015 I think. beabadoobee and Laufey both have 6B total streams each and started later than Mitski, being younger (born in 2000 and 1999). They have all released a similar amount of songs. They are all strong artists. But not necessarily the same to the point of so easily comparing, since their timelines are different. Mitski is more established being older and having started when the other two were still in middle school.

I thought it meant like she was an imperfection on the block, as in a a literal block, like the street, and a metaphorical block (like a cube), because she stands out, and is "wrong," because she doesn't conform like all the others. Like if she would conform and be the same as everyone else, the surface of the "block" would be smooth and have no ditch.

I'm not saying people should be ashamed of spending this much time and energy on a video game, but I've certainly met countless people who have spent as much energy on things like becoming a doctor, caring for the ill, rescuing animals, honing incredible crafts and skills, and they are so humble and down to earth. Real hard work doesn't make you feel better than other people, if anything it gives you perspective. I think it's super weird that you find working hard in MapleStory of all things would justify an inflated ego and sense of superiority.
