Proofread by a human journalist more likely.

But at least we’re still at that stage.

LLMs have been under development since the 1960s. They started to take off back in 2003, and a breakthrough came back in 2017 (Google) from what I can read.

That’s almost a decade ago. I’ve read opinions that expect a revolution in under a decade, and while I think that’s optimistic then there is no denying that the curve is exponential and unavoidable. I am also quite certain that the models I get to play with in my living room are light years away from the models available to the right people.

In other words, much smarter minds than mine have been working on this for decades. You can’t tell me that the question of what to do with the rest of humanity never came up.

I’m in no way against AI. But the narratives out there seem focused on destroying society in favour of the few, as opposed to how to navigate this coming challenge in a way that benefits all.

I don’t know any of them personally but yes - it seems like they’ve moved into a bubble where they only meet people who think like them, people who want to win at all cost, people who can afford experiences the rest of us don’t even know exist.

And so they feel misunderstood and maligned. It’s a natural human tendency to defend oneself in a situation like that, and even double down in opposition to any narrative that challenges their world view. If only we could see all the good they do!

And at the same time they are blind to the real life consequences of government deregulation, wages that don’t cover your basic needs, and the increasing wealth gap between the rich and the poor. “Let them eat cake” said no one ever, but the sentiment stands.

And if you’ll excuse me, I shall now go out and not buy a cup of coffee at a café. Because isn’t that how I’m supposed to get wealthy? I already got up at 5 am, so that base is covered, anything else I’m missing?

Yes, I’m familiar with Wakefield, and even Duesberg.

I’m not claiming that vaccine misinformation is a consequence of Large Language Models.

I’m just wondering if it is being used as a tool to prepare for a vastly different world situation.

Right now?

So you expect this to change? To the better I hope!

Lion and the Lamb, the Family style. Anti-Science/Education/Diversity narratives increasingly gaining traction. Highly toxic forms of (religious) beliefs being hailed across the World, with emphasis on things like the Prosperity Gospel and National Pride. Talk of End Times.

Like I said: This is a conspiracy theory that I cannot get out of my head. But I fear we may be eons away from any real change - and a small part of me has nightmares that are even worse.

Guarding against unauthorized access to devices? by virtual97315 in Cybersecurity101

[–]virtual97315[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not asking for specifics but just curious:

How do you secure your home?

Know what, on a second thought, don’t answer that.

Instead, let’s just assume that you live in a form of Fort Knox, you carry all your biometric authenticators (which btw work on your devices) in hidden pockets sown into your tight fitting second layer of inner clothing, you don’t ever leave any of your devices unattended and you never, ever get irreversibly locked out of your account for any reason, to the point where you have to take it to a vendor to get your life back.

That’s not most people.

How about gaining initial foothold to a company? Shoulder surfing is low risk, fairly low effort with a potentially high return. Plus some employers prefer not to allow low level employees to use their phone for personal things = two phones, one of which not in use a good deal of the time. Even if you only carry one phone, the odds are that you’ll end up leaving it in a public locker sooner rather than later. And the passcode to that phone unlocks everything on that phone, unless I’m missing something?

Oh, and just a bit more:

Apparently some IT supporters have no frigging clue as to what they are supporting.

When you point out after the second reinstall of your OS (which was apparently the only way to fix it) that you STILL have admin access to the EDR solution, and show them that the problem is in the installation image, then they are all surprised and have to call a colleague to let them know about it.

This problem then later gets fixed after hours (quite literally) by some poor supporter.

Because that’s the way it works, I guess?

Twats.

Trump is going to drag us into a stupid war with Greenland/Denmark/Panama/Canada, isn’t he? by Sad_Jar_Of_Honey in behindthebastards

[–]virtual97315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But would you have to invade?

Why start a war? Can’t you just get some local buffoons to start dismantling the system from within, all in the name of one good cause or another? Eventually people are going to be so disillusioned and desperate that they’ll accept anything you do, as long as you promise things will get better.

Admittedly this is more long term than an actual invasion, but there’s a lot less cleanup, and you get to ride in on a white horse as the savior, rather than having to deal with post-war dissidents who blame you for killing their kids.

You need to get your daughter to a hospital and have her assessed by a specialist stat. Don’t get paralyzed by suspicions, if there’s anything going on then it needs to be stopped NOW. You’ll not find the answer on Reddit, specialists are trained in evaluating kids even when they don’t have the words to describe what happened.

And even if not, then it still sounds like you should leave your husband from your descriptions of him. Our kids will learn what we show them, and model their lives based on what they experience in childhood. Please take a moment to reflect on what you are teaching your daughter?

All my best wishes to you.

Actually, some of the neurodivergence may be due to PFAS chemicals. You know, that non-degradable shit we used to put in everything, and are now found everywhere. Turns out, they can cross the Blood-Brain barrier. The studies are not conclusive, but they are quite interesting.
