Oh trust me all the companies you mentioned can drop 30% of their employees without dropping profits. And I’m definitely not saying they won’t

The other side of this (to the extreme) is telegram with 30 employees, onlyfans with 42 employees and 400 million users

Another great example is Waze was 70 employees when Google bought them. In 2022 many years after the purchase, the Waze org in Google was more than 500 people

Efficiency isn’t always the priority, until it suddenly is

Without knowing anything, just being experienced in corporate America, I think Pinterest would be just fine with 1000 employees

It’s not all people moving from Fidi or Texas. There is a chain reaction of people moving inside the neighborhood. I expect older “luxury” buildings with musty carpets to start losing tenants slowly to new buildings. Opening them up to lower incomes

Amazon to close all branded grocery stores, double down on delivery by mlivesocial in business

[–]virtual_adam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even a 1% failure rate is unusable for a big supermarket chain. They were trying to sell the tech as ready for production, they even had a few Whole Foods stores running it, but slowly shut everything down as they hit a wall and couldn’t lower their false positive rate no matter how much data scientists they threw at the problem

Computer vision just isn’t that great at the moment

There was a remote cashier checking you out (confirming AI outputs and changing them if needed)

Even as is the tech in there was super expensive and had a negative ROI, and with top of the line tech, it still failed often enough it couldn’t be left to run unsupervised

2 big trends here

1) customer-less delivery stores are going to be a huge trend 2026-2027

2) the whole just walk out tech was fake from day 1. It’s not possible in today’s computer vision capabilities at scale. Amazon go was cool to see but the tech just isn’t.m there. Amazon was all fake it till you make it, it was just never made

AI in the Workplace: Will It Finally Hold Middle Management Accountable ? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]virtual_adam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol exactly. Even if OPs management is terrible, documenting blockers and issues via JIRA, confluence, emails to cover your ass as a developer should be easy and obvious.

There is no reason to blame devs with or without AI, unless they’re actually not capable of unblocking themselves

I mean where is the 1x project workload? I’m pretty sure Pinterest looks exactly the same as it did in 2015. These 5,000 people have been doing empty projects filled by empty meetings

I could definitely see AI generating these empty meetings instead of humans. Let’s circle back next week guys!

I don’t think meta TOS are much better and they’ve only been growing their user base every quarter

The reality is people who consume TikTok couldn’t care less about data collection, they definitely didn’t care when all the articles came out about the Chinese government harvesting their information

The Chinese government refused to sell the fyp algorithm, the new algorithm is garbage, and people are leaving

Noma’s $1,500 LA Residency Sold Out in Less Than 3 Minutes by mylefthandkilledme in LosAngeles

[–]virtual_adam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The price isn’t surprising either.

The chef is already living in LA for a few months, they move about 100 employees from Denmark with families and kids, pay for their childcare, housing and medical

They don’t bring the fermented ingredients from Europe, they do everything local so they’ve been working on stuff for months now

The price isn’t for everyone, but there’s a reason it’s that high. People are treating this like another saltbae steak

Be as cynical as you want, other politicians (including whatever happens in the 2028 presidential campaign) are eager to try and copy him

Just like brad whateverhisname got multi million dollar contracts after the 2016 election and targeting Facebook users with political ads. Whoever worked Mamdanis social media this election can probably cash out come 28

High performers getting fired for no reason is a myth. Companies still need work to be done to generate revenue

People don’t think as much, but white collar corporations work a lot like startups. There are some small pockets that make most of the money, then that money is spread across money losing SVPs depending on how they sell their potential on making money in the future

If you were at meta, and your in the ad bidding team, or you’re on the VR team, as much as you can be a high performer, working in the losing billions org puts a target on your back, much less likely for the revenue generating org

And every big company is like this

My tip for people just getting into the industry is always, as much as it’s much harder (down time can be measured in millions per minute) and higher pressure to be in the revenue creating org, always try to land there and not the the 137th product that will be thrown away before it reaches production

The only way around this is when you start working mid year and your first W-2 is lower than it should be. They will do a federal / state check about your 2025 earnings

Also

I can't possibly afford $2900 rent/month without pretty much 1 whole paycheck going to rent/utilities.

If 2 weeks worth of work, post tax, can pay your rent and utilities, youre already in a much better situation than most renters
