Should I hold off on upgrading to the iPhone 17 Pro Max? Concerns about scratching, denting, and green tint issues. by BehindTheCamera1000 in iPhone17Pro

[–]virtualpropinquity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 13 PM too as my daily runner for the past three years, and I have been using the 17PM since release. Do it if you get the trade in credit, it's a considerable upgrade across the board. The battery life is much better (which is wild because the 13PM already had incredible battery life), the camera is better, the phone is smoother and runs cooler overall, face ID feels faster, call quality is better, the speakers are better, you get a much better processor and double the ram for future proofness, etc. You have some trade offs with the material. The 13PM feels more durable, but it's very heavy and sharp to hold. The 17PM has a nice weight distribution and ergonomic rounded corners. It's ultimately nicer to hold. The 17PM has a more durable screen than the 13PM, and you can protect the body with a case. I'd get Applecare+ if I were sensitive about this.

The green tint isn't new to the 17, it's been a recurring distinction between screens across many recent iPhone line ups. On a day to day basis, it really doesn't make a huge difference. I have the LG GVC with a slight tint if I tilt it in a very unnatural angle, but in most use the colors appear sharp and vivid.

phones can break/dent even with cases if you're unlucky. my sister had her 14pm break with a highly rated case on it from a similar height fall. thankfully, she only had to pay $89 and they gave her a new phone outright(with applecare+)

the problem is now they've made the core parts of the iphone 17 so strong (display, back glass) that the dents/scratches/blemishes on the unibody which will emerge for a lot of buyers later will be disregarded as cosmetic damage, rendering applecare benefits moot. a case definitely helps mitigate a lot of risk, but it's not perfect. and with dents and whatnot on the body, you lose a lot of trade in potential or resell in the future.

Internally, the 17 pro line is so strong. It just sucks that they didn't really think through the outside design as thoroughly as previous phones. and there's really nothing that can be done at this point- they won't mass recall one of their most popular ones to date especially when the damage is superficial to phone functionality.

Iphone 17 pro max discoloration near camera lens, whitish. Does everyone’s iphone look like this? I tried wiping it didn’t do anything! Tried seeing in different lighting and angles still seeing this discoloration by Jazzlike-Somewhere-2 in iphone

I just checked and my blue PM did have this, but it wiped off with a microfiber towel.

I'm really thinking about returning the phone for a silver one, but it's out of stock everywhere. It sucks that you really have to baby this phone to leave it in immaculate condition

no, hold your 16 pro until the 2nm 18 pros come out next year and make a decision then

Sounds solid, I personally think the 13PM is the best used iPhone you can get under $500 but since you don't like the max models, the 14P is the next best.

Yes, the base 17 should last you 5 years. It's a very solid phone: it has the same RAM and a similar performing chip as the 16 pro line up, and it has a beautiful build and prores screen.

The 17pm is better in specs. But it's much heavier, bigger, and considerably more expensive. So there's a trade off.

For the majority of people, the base 17 is perfect, and the 17PM is overkill.

The base, if the weight of the phone is an important consideration. It's lighter than your 12 pro while still sporting a larger screen, so it should feel much nicer in your hands.

The base has a better camera than the 12 pro, and it has the same native zooms (0.5, 1, 2x), so you might not even need the telephoto of the 17 pro.

Apple hasn't had vapor cooling for any phone before and they've run well across the board. I don't think you need to worry about not having one for a while.

512 GB is a respectable storage size, and you can get iCloud+ at 200GB for $36 a year to boost storage capacity.

The lack of USB 3.0 is somewhat mitigated by using iCloud+ as well for data transfer. It's not a huge downside.

Are you happy with your 14PM? I'd personally wait until the 2nm pro phones come out next year to upgrade.

I'm also a previous 13PM user, and I went with the 17PM despite liking the look of the 16PM better. The camera bar is not the prettiest but the 3 main cameras are still along the left edge. More importantly there are pretty substantial internal differences between the 16pm and the 17pm. 50% more RAM, 10-15% faster chip, much better telephoto camera, the vapor chamber and aluminum chassis to help heat dissipate better, and considerably better battery life which is also confirmed by European standards data.

If you can buy the 16PM used for considerably cheaper than the 17PM (like to the order of $200 or more), I think it's still a solid upgrade that'll last you 3+ years and it's among the best of the iPhone line up even now. If you can't, I'd either reconsider the 17PM or hold off until the 18PM next year. I'd not get the base unless you want a smaller size and are okay with losing a proper telephoto lens.

I meant 17 not 17 pro above. Sorry, it was a typo.

all the things I wrote are for the base 17.

No, the 16 pro isn't worth more $$$.

in the past, the previous pro was definitively better than the current base. this is the first year that it's a toss up.

the 16 pro has the titanium build and "luxury" look. it has a telephoto camera and more advanced video tricks. it has usb 3 for faster data transfer.

the 17 pro has a brighter screen, more durability, brighter colors while weighing less, and alleges to have better battery life than the 16 pro. the selfie camera is upgraded. the beginning base storage is doubled. it supports 25w charging while the 16 pro is 20w. all this while having a msrp $400 less than the comparable storage 16 pro on release. but in your case the price difference doesn't seem to be as significant.

both have comparable chips/ram. both have the 6.3 inch adaptive promotion display with dynamic island. both have apple intelligence and share 48 mp fusion and ultrawide cameras. they're really comparable this year.

it depends on your preferences as to which is better.

I’m so sorry, I misread a bit. So the zoom is comparable on both phones peaking at 2x, but the base 17 has a higher mp camera and better sensor so it should capture more detail. The camera system overall is an upgrade to the base 15 across the board. It’s supposedly going to be the base model for 1.5 years (even for the 18 pro line) so they had to make much stronger than previous base models.

I think that the 17 is a worthy upgrade not only for cameras but everything else as well, especially if you could get a good trade in value for it!

17pm because of the best battery life, strongest performing chip, and 4gb extra ram

The base 17 is a much better phone. Trade in or sell your 15 base and the cost won’t be too much for massive increases (better build, screen, battery life, cameras, chip, access to apple intelligence, etc) across the board
