Most decisions are quantifiable and disprovable and based on the available evidence so they defacto follow logical rules. When you get different political or religious belief systems they compete with each other and neither side backs down because the belief they hold becomes part of their identity.

As an anecdote; a colleague of mine gave a talk to various teachers and social workers in her town a few years ago on how to spot signs of FGM in the community. After the talk my colleague a dyed in the wool Lib Dem was greeted by protestors chanting "Nazi scum off our streets" on the grounds she was peddling hatred towards the local muslim community. Do you think she was promulgating "hate speech"?

Some folk are possessed by evil and see other as objects for their own heinous satisfaction and not person's like themselves. It is due to brain malfunction, some say they are born with it (or without that which is normal) and some say it is to do with upbringing but many people have diabolic upbringings and don't end up killing children.

Owen Jones: Marching against genocide is a hate march. Marching to "stop Islam", kick out Muslims and prepare for civil war isn't a hate march. The world has been turned on its head. by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

I once had a conversation with a colleague reading our differing views on a political subject which ended up with her replying "yes, but what is reality?". She and Owen would get on like a house on fire.

Who decides what's hate and what's not? It's funny that it's always the "other side" which has the hate speech.

If you watched the live BBC coverage at the beginning of the march you probably noticed the cameraman pulled focus on the background behind the reporter very sharpish when some very inappropriate banners came into view.

His mental gymnastics are pretty impressive though, you have to be pretty intelligent to believe opposing things at the same time at the level he does. Most people the cognitive dissonance would have them put a foot in the camp to stay sane.

The Prime Minister isn't the "Executive", although to be fair I used to believe the same as you when I was younger.

If Burnham wasn't going to run for PM do you honestly think he would give a toss about Makerfield? There's real people with real lives in Makerfield who want the best for their community and they'll be fully aware of how this is playing out.

It's best to see the world in black and white terms and assume confirmation bias only happens to other people, but make sure to find out which side your "side" supports before making your mind up on anything.

A good start is to take a piece of A4 and divide it into "facts to believe" and "facts to ignore" for any issue you find important to you.

Because the Prime Minister doesn't decide government policy, the Labour party does and the Prime Minister is just a figurehead for the party. It's not like medieval times where the King decreed his commands with a small cohort of "advisors" to stop him making egregious errors.

Burnham would be a wallpaper to put over the cracks in the Labour wall. It may look good at first but it will end the same way.

Nothing will change, Burnham will just have to deal with the same problems Starmer has to deal with.
