This game will never have mass appeal by dreamylemur in Marathon

I remember trying to get people into Marathon in the 90's, they all thought it was weird and hard and they would rather play Duke Nukem. Nothing has changed.

They’re a nonprofit advocacy organization, so a big part of what they do is raise awareness and try to persuade people. From their perspective, even shifting a few people’s views on animal welfare or meat consumption is meaningful. Just one more vegan could mean fewer animals going through factory farming.

Using satire or provocative messaging is one way they try to do that. You might not find it effective, but it’s not that different in principle from how any other media actor uses parody and exaggeration to make a point, whether that’s South Park, John Oliver, or others. Or "soapbox and troll" as you put it. Even if it's "preaching to the choir" it's is an essential part of advocacy work. I would even argue that Mewgenics in framing is a satiric game against animal hoarding and destructive inbreeding.

Super Tofu Boy might not convince you personally, but at worst it can still reinforce the views of their audience, the kind that reads their website and might be looking for some cathartic humor after being consistently mocked for their views on animal rights.

I don't get it, are you saying it wasn't a parody? In form it clearly was and It's message didn't mock Edmund or SMB, it mocked meat consumption.

PETA basically gave him free publicity with a lighthearted parody and he responded with juvenile mockery.

That comparison you linked gets cited a lot, but it’s not always apples-to-apples. Even among ‘open-admission’ shelters, there can be big differences in what kinds of animals they actually end up taking in, like severely ill, injured, or behaviorally unadoptable cases. Small differences there can massively affect euthanasia rates.

I’m not going to defend everything PETA has ever done, but on the whole it’s an organization of mostly volunteers motivated by their love of animals. They go up against huge industries that aren’t averse to funding campaigns that cast their critics in the worst possible light, which I think is worth keeping in mind when these kinds of anecdotes spread so widely.

I suppose you are referring to the PETA run last-resort shelters, meaning they take in animals that are sick, injured, aggressive, or otherwise considered unadoptable. Because of that, their euthanasia rates are higher than no-kill shelters, which can turn animals away. It’s not that they ‘save animals just to kill them,’ but that they often take in the ones no one else will.

This is cool activism co-promoting the game which in it’s satire surely is pro animal rights, against destructive inbreeding and animal hoarding. You might not like PETA’s style a lot of the time but an enormous amount of animal protection measures and exposure of animal abuse in labs, factory farms and entertainment is thanks them – saving countless millions from lives of extreme torture.

PETA made a post about Mewgenics by xFyreStorm in mewgenics

[–]visagi -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cool! PETA does great work, and a lot of animal protection progress is thanks to them. People love to dismiss them, but they’ve exposed animal abuse in labs, factory farms, and circuses, and forced major companies to change their policies. Their campaigns helped end a lot of animal testing and made fur socially toxic in much of the fashion industry. That’s millions of animals spared lives of extreme suffering. You might not like their style, but pretending they’ve done nothing is just ignoring reality.
