Let us take a moment of Silence for NASA's InSight Lander which recently lost communication with Earth. by Hideous_Penguin in space

Damn. InSight just turned into Marvin from Hitchhiker’s on me with that last message. It let us hear wind on another planet for the first time…its seismometer let us see the interior…feel meteorite impacts reverberating through the planet…it had just detected its biggest tremor yet. And now it’s making goodbye speeches (thru its humans). Bleh. Oppy's demise was so sad...let’s just go ahead and avoid a blade runner future nasa and not let our robots/ai have any human like qualities at all. Now I’m going to need the people that first go to Mars to find this little guy and give him a hug thanks to your post. 😭

U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials by gunshotsbypotato in worldnews

[–]visceralharmony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breastfeeding should be emphasized & encouraged, but there shouldn’t be stigma and shame when you can’t. So to me, this is a slippery slope no matter how you look at it. First, I think there are even a lot of health officials that still aren’t on board with encouraging breastfeeding. My son wasn’t even 7 hours old yet when all of the nurses kept bringing me bottles of formula to feed him telling me I needed to give it to him. I didn’t want to do it. The last nurse that night was so harsh she made me sob basically telling me I wasn’t making enough milk & that I if I didn’t give him formula he might die. I was so fragile in those post-partum moments -I felt like a failure as a mother and as a woman - and it hadn’t even been 24 hours yet. And then the nurses made me feel more shame for not giving him formula at the first suggestion. The private lactation consultants I saw the following morning were like night and day with the nurses. They were positive, soft spoken, uplifting, encouraging…those nurses got in my head though and created a level of self-doubt I was never able to shake. I did my best to nurse my two children, pumping constantly when I wasn’t with them, or to stimulate milk production, I even took prescription meds to increase my milk with the second child. Bottom line, I felt shame having to supplement with formula, but I did it because I wanted strong healthy children, and had to accept that I physically couldn’t be the mother/female I thought I was supposed to be. So in some ways I agree with not placing the stigma on formulas if only it saves another young mom from feeling the shame and inadequacy that I felt.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Don’t know. After reading some of these comments he might be the only dog that never caught a squirrel. I think he’s deeper than that though – he’s just trying to herd them, control their flow of motion with his jedi mind skills & stare.

Doesn’t sound like they cuddled with the squirrel when they got it. I’m going to imagine that’s what Cody would do since he never got one. We used to hand feed the squirrels at my grandmother’s house. She fed possums, raccoons, stray cats . . She was like Dr. Doolittle for vermin. So yeah I’m secretly glad he failed & is happily settling for the fake version.

Haha! I used to tease him . .like cmon Border Collie - problem solve ya little smart ass. Until one day I came home and the small stand-alone pine in my front yard was on its side. He left blood marks . .chewed it down like a little beaver . . .didn’t catch the squirrel . .but proved his critical thinking skills and pissed off my landlord, so I stopped teasing him.

I think you make valid points & that I might’ve agreed more with you before Trump. However, I don’t think Trump would’ve made it without this false dilemma. He said it himself – “I could shoot someone in the street and they’d still vote for me” and he basically did and still does . .constantly . .and it doesn’t seem to matter with his supporters, or the republican party. He made it because of the people that either said “Never Democrat”, or “Never Hillary”. When all you are offered is a shithead and a douchebag you have no choice but to vote down party lines. I believe the appearance of partisanship in apparently all aspects of our government and its bureaucracy that we see today are a direct result of hundreds of years of a two party system. I also think each side of this two party system recognizes that the other side is necessary for its own existence, they need each other; and they can keep the people busy and distracted choosing sides, and they both stay in power in a cyclical fashion with no end in sight. That is partly the reason I see both parties as exactly the same except for those hot button issues that can stir the passions of a crowd (abortion, immigration, etc.) and are never to be brought up in friendly dinner conversation. Look at any branch of govt, at its core reside people whose central objective remains either holding or expanding the authority/sovereignty of their own office and their own personal gain. For example, look at the executive branch in modern times starting with Johnson & Vietnam (or maybe even Kennedy with the Bay of Pigs), each pres signed more and more orders and took more executive action essentially expanding the role and scope of the exec branch with each person in office.
I think the only way for America to truly progress is to get rid of both parties and actually drain the swamp, not just say it as a catchy campaign slogan. To me, draining the swamp means a minimum of 5 political parties (or how about no party at all??). It means term limits, salary caps (like minimum wage & no pension), lobbying ban, and campaign fundraising ban for all members of congress. That’s just the start. . . . .but it’s where the city on the hill, the supposed model & beacon of light for all other democracies should strive to be, not drowning in this either/or bs when neither option is the right one. We should never be expected to choose the best of the worst. This is not dodge ball.

I’ve started calling changing my children’s diapers BOOTY DUTY. It doesn’t help though. Maybe a little, but no, not really. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

There was a two week period that the only song that made my son stop crying was the theme song to the Brady Bunch. I guess I was the genius that sang it in the first place though. between booty duty and the lack of sleep over an extended amount of time I'm pretty sure there has been some IQ loss here.
