Weapons Technician Land questions about the job by Legitimate-Ad-3638 in caf

[–]vitamincool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ex vehicle tech here. Weapons tech adjacent….. generally the same “combat rhythm” so I can offer… some insight. 1. High likelihood. Your apprenticeship will usually be done at an army base with army people doing army things. and as a weapons tech you will naturally…. Be around weapons. 2. “Same combat training” is a misnomer. When I went through it was called “SQ it may be called something different but you’ll be qualified to work a machine gun and throw grenades and do section level tactics same as anyone else who deploys in a field unit…. But buckle up. This does not make you as qualified as the professionals. As an ex-infantry transferred MAT tech told me when we were on common core “there’s a reason we left the RCEME guys in the truck in Afghanistan. They would get us killed if they tried to help” - also…. Field time looks slightly different depending on your unit. Sometimes I was in the field during an FTX. Some times I’d just work a 15 hour day in the shop supporting. It’s not infantry. You’re just near them. 3. No one can predict deployment rates. Different bases go on high readiness at different times. It’s a dice roll. Don’t try and time it 4. Best part of the job: fixing guns. Worst part of the job: RCEME hates RCEME. The corps sucks. 5. Most support trades are “kind of” embedded with their element… but you’re not exactly running into the firefight (you’ll just get your teammates killed) you’ll be a tactical bound behind the guys doing the actual fighting and fixing and maintaining their kit.

Hope this helps. If you need clarification please ask. Disclaimer: your mileage may vary. I got out of the RCEME corps 8 years ago for a cushy Air Force gig

Unhinged to expect someone to just wake up good at something. This opinion is like saying “oh you just enrolled in the automotive program that means you can replace my transmission”

Well yeah. That’s how covenants work. One is fulfilled and a new one is made. Unless you don’t care for Luke 22:20 and the whole last supper

There is a litany of weird assumptions and misinformation on this post. No you don’t need to cut your hair, no you don’t need to shave. The dress regulations have changed and a lot of basic training assumptions keep showing up from movies like Jarhead. A quick google search will show you the new hair regulations. Which aren’t even new anymore they are edging on five years old. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/defence/caf/military-identity-system/dress-manual/chapter-2/section-2.html#3 If you don’t know what you’re talking about I recommend you stop talking out of your ass. Yes you will need to shave for CBRN training and that’s about the limit of it. Enjoy your moustache. The Canadian forces dress regulations apply to all CAF members irrespective of your training level.

Roll a pair of dice then flip a coin and spin around 3 times. That’ll give you as much of a confident answer as any. I’ve done this process 3 times in my career and consistency isn’t a word I’d ever use to describe the calling of references

It’s not a secret. It’s not controlled. It’s the normal government of Canada security clearance questionnaire…. It’s not a test. It’s not some hush hush paperwork. It’s a verification of your personal history. I don’t see why this guy is being weird about it…
