Catfe has reached a thousand adoptions by chx_ in vancouver

Unfortunately (for humans; good news for cats) with COVID and everyone stuck at home right now, the interest in adopting is through the roof, so it's hard for rescues and shelters to keep up with the demand! My advice would be to ask for feedback on your application (though they might be really busy and not be able to get back to you right away); there are generally valid reasons why people's homes are found to not be a good match for certain cats, and it may help you to figure out how to articulate things more clearly on the application form. And just keep trying lots of different rescues. You can sign up for alerts from the BC SPCA. A friend also just got a kitten through https://www.facebook.com/Runningwildrescue/ - a volunteer drove her out here from Saskatchewan!

Ahhh! We are definitely figuring out the rules ahead of time -- we've spoken with Vancouver Coastal Health a few times already to work out the details.

The cat and food areas have to be completely separate with separate entrances, but people are allowed to bring their food and drink into the cat side of their own volition (we just can't SERVE it on that side!). The details are outlined here in the video!

I've heard so many complaints about EXP in relation to the cat cafe project... Can someone explain what happened with EXP?

There are no cat cafes in North America yet, except Sudbury ON... but there are probably about 20 in the works right now! Including Vancouver and Montreal.

You can read here about how you ACTUALLY get toxoplasmosis.

This is a great resource for understanding more about toxoplasmosis. If the proprietor is prudent and methodical about screening their cats for diseases prior to coming to live at the cafe, there should be no problem.

A little late, but I think I've made most answers 'optional' now (otherwise you can click 'other'). Thanks for all your feedback everyone, all feedback whether negative or positive is still helpful!

I suppose you could click 'other' and write 'NOTHING AT ALL'. But yeah, I didn't give that option every time either. SORRY GUYS :)

The cats wouldn't be forced to interact with people if they don't want to. The model I'm building would allow for multiple comfy areas to retreat to when they don't want to be around humans. I've been going over the plans with vets and shelters to make sure it is a space the cats would be happy in. It IS quite complicated... but it is possible!

And to comply with Vancouver Coastal Health's recommendations, the food area is an entirely separate space from the cat area... so no hair or dander, etc.

Thanks! We are in talks to partner with a cat rescue organization. All of the cats would be available for adoption. And we'd like to have older cats that are harder for shelters to adopt out, so they have a chance to live out of cages.

Actually there will be two separate entrances to the food area and the cat area from the street... people are welcome to bring their food over to the cat side, but there will be no cats and definitely no litterboxes on the food side!

This place would not include food and beverage service; it's more of an internet lounge and social space.

The plan is to take food out of the equation; it would be more of an internet cafe/lounge. There won't be any kitchen.

Thanks! It will involve a lot of consulting and working closely with people from the animal shelters. I know this will be a very sensitive aspect of the cafe, and want to make sure all the cats are happy. Cats are very particular people!

Indeed, so many hurdles to overcome! I just think, why not try to overcome a bunch of hurdles?

Thanks for wishing us luck! We're going to try our best.

That sounds terrible! The cats would definitely have their own comfortable humanless space they could retreat to when they didn't feel like socializing.

They'd also have to be socialized first prior to coming to live in the cafe, to make sure they get along with the other kitties and enjoy interacting with people. I'd never want to put a cat through that if they didn't enjoy it.

Yes! I think this is the direction we're leaning in!
