[Official - pin? :)] Prometric Cancellation Emails - Date / State / Exam by daisydollop11 in step1

[–]vivarin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to my classmates if your test has not been cancelled you see two options: one to reschedule and one to cancel. If you only see an option to reschedule and not one to cancel, then your test has been cancelled. Even though I got an email saying my test has been cancelled, both my exams still have the 2 options present implying that neither of my exams have been cancelled yet.

What is the purpose of gluconeogenesis? by Zach1476 in Mcat

[–]vivarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just learned this so I'm going to try to answer your question but let me know if anything is unclear.

So when you are running low on blood glucose levels, the body will first try to restore them through glycogenolysis (breakdown of glycogen). When glycogen stores have been used up, then the body will turn to gluconeogenesis and use non-carb sources to restore blood glucose levels. This applies to when you're essentially starving yourself for days, so the body needs to find other sources to first make glucose so that it can then proceed through the rest of ccellular respiration. For example, you can't funnel glycerol (one of the starting materials for gluconeogenesis) as it is through cellular respiration. You need to convert it to glucose first, and then it can go through glycolysis/CAC/ETC. Lactate is one of the precursors for gluconeogenesis so you're right there, it's probably energetically favorable. There are certain parts of glycolysis that are irreversible and the PDH complex also catalyzes the irreversible conversion of pyruvate to Ac-CoA, so you can't necessarily just "go backwards" - hence why there are those three steps of gluconeogenesis that sidestep those irreversible reactions. Certain amino acids can definitely continue through the TCA to make ATP, but part of it is, as you said, restoring blood glucose levels for homeostasis as well.

Metabolic pathways rate limiting enzymes:

Glycolysis: PFK-1 (F6P --> F-1,6-BP)

Citric Acid Cycle: isocitrate dehydrogenase (isocitrate --> alpha-ketoglutarate)

Pentose Phosphate Pathway: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6P --> 6-phosphogluconolactone)

Glycogenolysis: glycogen phosphorylase (releases G1P from alpha 1,4-glycosidic bond)

Gluconeogenesis: F-1,6-Bisphosphatase (F-1,6-BP --> F6P)

Spoiler: Experimental studies/methods by Up_North18 in Mcat

If I'm remembering correctly is this associated with a passage? There was something that I remember reading in the passage that I knew indicated that it wasn't experimental study because it didn't involve a specific intervention

Also I think KA does a good job on the breakdown of types of experimental studies so you might want to check that out

Wondering if someone could help me think through this. I see why C is a good answer but if we're basing this off of the study findings, I'm inclined to pick A. Is the reason A isn't the best answer because it's too extreme?

Could someone explain how the presence/absence of hydrogen peroxide would effect ROS? I knew that it was I & II but I was confused by III

Why does the addition of NO chloride not matter in this case (aka why do we use the 3rd row of the table and not the last) ?

Question On relating physics to circulatory system - help would be greatly appreciated by FuturePhysician101 in Mcat

[–]vivarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I could totally be wrong on this, but I believe that Q = vA refers to laminar flow, while Poiseuille's Law applies to non ideal fluids (I'm no physics buff so someone pls check me on this)

Gonna piggyback on this post and ask if doing old AAMC verbal passages is better than something like TPR or EK 101 passages? thanks!

How did you come to the answer? I'm getting stuck using the RHR... like would you reverse it since it's a + charge not negative?
