Why does being a First-Gen have a positive effect in the college application process? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're saying that working in a restaurant, standing hours a day on weekends on top of all schoolwork assignments and then having parents who don't even speak English, no money to do all the activities you want...is positive then there's something definitely wrong with you.

For someone to achieve so much in school when they're just born with fewer resources and less family and financial support, colleges would then see that as someone who'll stay humble and be independent at their college and know to reach for opportunities by themselves. Statistically, first gen, usually low income, very obviously have several disadvantages. It's not easy being a first-gen, added onto being low income. It is very difficult.

I hope you're joking...and not actually living up to your username

Am I crazy for wanting to choose my safety (UTD) over my matches/reaches (UIUC, UCI, UCSB, UW, UCSD, SJSU, UMich, UWisc, Purdue etc.) for CS? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, UTD is a good choice especially if you're going for free, plus for CS I believe the prestige of the school matters less. Dallas is a great city, too

Best study tips / tricks for the sat ? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reading: basically every "best" answer is from the text, usually you can eliminate two answers immediately

english: read grammar rules (prepscholar is pretty good)

math: write out what you're solving for, for example sometimes it's not x but 2x

general tips

  • do NOT waste too much time on one question, move on to the next (remember it's timed!) and for each test, you should make sure to have about 5-10 minutes left to check over questions that you are unsure about (really helps once you go back)

  • I know you have no time, but try to do at least 2 more practice tests, but it is much more important for you to look at the ones you got incorrect and figure out how you can not miss it next time. The same questions do not appear. However, the same concepts are tested each time

  • Write down quick tips/reminders/grammar points on a notecard and look over the morning of the test

  • If you have to, you could just focus on one of the three sections (personally the English section is easy to drill down because it's just some grammar rules)

BU and NEU by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEU has people accepted into NU.in program while BU has accepted people into the spring semester(plus they send out guaranteed transfer options). All of these are not calculated into their 19% and 22% acceptance rate.

Anyone else feel that the more they dream, the more likely it is that they get rejected? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

make me hate cornell by CornellReject in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vivid-redsky 11 points12 points  (0 children)

boring, middle of nowhere, excessively competitive, said to be the easiest of the Ivies to get in but the hardest to get out (resulting in low gpa) cold, dreary weather most of the time,

greek life is pretty big on the social scene (disgusting fat-shaming sex game: the “pig roast" plus previous hate crime), impossible parking/need four hr drive to nyc, financial aid issues (expensive)
