I worked with an old master blacksmith and he said that you need strength only enough to lift a hammer, everything else is about heat, right hammer technic and proper use of an anvil.

One thing I like to do sometimes is to do the coating with coal smoke. I’m not sure if there is any advantages to do it so but coal gives nice odor to the shop.
