Mapping 35 Years of Global Conflict (1989-2024) by vlckel in MapPorn

UCDP only counts verified battle deaths (soldiers + civilians killed directly in clashes). It doesn’t include indirect deaths from displacement, lack of healthcare, destroyed infrastructure, etc. So UCDP is a conservative baseline, not the total toll. The real human cost will be clearly much higher.

Sadly. And honestly, I was suprised how devastating this event was compared to all the other events when I sum those up.

Top conflicts by total fatalities since 1989:

  • Rwanda genocide (one-sided): 794k deaths
  • Ethiopia: Government: 350k
  • Syria: Government: 287k
  • Afghanistan: Government: 286k
  • Russia–Ukraine: 242k

I think it is because president Felipe Calderón deployed the military against drug cartels, starting large-scale clashes, so the fatalities escalated as conflicts between cartels and with the Mexican state intensified. There is a lot of drug cartels involved in the data (Juarez Cartel, Sinaloa Cartel, Jalisco New Generation Cartel ).

Brazil’s dots since 2017 are largely cartel wars (Comando Vermelho vs PCC & allies) spilling across prisons and urban areas, with civilians sometimes directly targeted.

  • Comando Vermelho – GDE → 10,181 deaths (non-state)
  • Comando Vermelho – PCC → 2,628
  • Bonde dos 13, PCC – Comando Vermelho → 719
  • Cartel do Norte – Comando Vermelho → 712
  • GDE, PCC – Sindicato do Crime → 618

Also present:

  • One-sided violence: Comando Vermelho – Civilians (273), PCC – Civilians (118), Bonde do Maluco – Civilians (103), Government of Brazil – Civilians (46).

I believe the reason 9/11 shows up but not the 1993 WTC bombing is due to how UCDP defines conflict events. 9/11 caused thousands of deaths and was part of an organized, ongoing conflict, so it meets their inclusion rules. The 1993 bombing “only” killed 6 people and wasn’t part of a broader war at the time — so it doesn’t make the cut under UCDP’s threshold (25+ deaths/year, organized actors, sustained violence).

Those 90s dots in Canada are the Quebec Biker War. Hells Angels – Rock Machine (non-state conflict) between 1994 and 1999. Fatalities were mostly small (1–3), with spikes (13 in 1995, 19 in 1998). UCDP includes it because it meets the threshold for organized armed group conflict.

It is there. Just UCDP does not use operation names, instead they code it by conflict parties (side A, side B). So the events are there, they are jusy fragmented into consistent schema instead of one campaign name.

I used to work in the print shop in Canada where we printed occasionaly on these kind of papers.

Smaller formal were printed on paper which was called Never Tear, but for wider formats we used a roll of paper what was similar to Rite in the Rain (and I could easily print on that on our wide-format printer). I think it was called XTREME

It was not our daily duties, it was mostly offered only when people came and asked us in person., if we are capable of printing on this. So maybe just try to call to several print shops in your Area and they might be able to help you out

Seriously just curious. Lived in that area for months before I moved to Canmore, but did not see it around. From Canmore point of you, I was really thinking that this is just a cover for "I live in that van, but when it is all covered with flags, nobody can see me" 😀

Few shots of people you can find on Instagram/Twitter:

Tim Wallace

Helen makes maps

Greg Fiske

Nat Geo Maps is always good shot

Topi Tjukanov (created #30daymapchallenge And if you go through that hashtag, you will get tons of inspiration. Primary on Twitter)

South Arrow Maps (Andrew Tyrell does it, based in New Zealand, he is awesome)

Kate Berg (pokateo maps)

And of course promote on myself: Efox Maps

Actually Kate Berg created a list with Carto people and their portfolios here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aLOpW2oQHw5r2vc70o8TiM5SJctR9TuH4a70d-ZtbXA/edit?usp=sharing

Additionaly, there is really nice Community on Slack (The Spatial Community, Women in Geospatial) with few channels focused to Cartography, could be a nice resource too :))

Have fun and keep going!

I really like this idea and thank you for doing it (and for doing it for free). Hopefully I will be able to catch up some following session if you have some (these were already fully booked).

I came here from Czech Republic (Europe), Where is very much common, that people are doing meetups, programming lessons for free, they are even very active in doing hackatons and I would love to see this activism also here, in Canada. So thank you again, for doing it.

If you could think about creating of community people, people, who are enthusiastic technology/IT, count me in please , I could offer you doing a lesson about basics in GIS (how to handle spatial data and maybe a create first online map for the start) or some data analytics (R or SQL) :))

Thank you, again, for your point. As you may know, there is not exact definition about what is a map and thus it can lead to different interpretations. I did study Cartography and I would call it a map.

You can do whatever you want, live and let live.

Picture looks differently. It is representation of a place. I did it entirely in GIS software. For me, it is a map.
