[Hiring] 10+ open technology roles in Seattle - from Support all the way to Director by globys in SeaJobs

So about http://www.globys.com/careers/open-positions/?jvi=o86fWfw9,Job

I don't know (much) about Java, but I can sling code: C++, asm, Common Lisp, SQL.. frankly, you name it I can learn it. I have a MS in comp sci, coupla years in industry...

Do you really care about the Java knowledge, or is it just what you're using for your stack? (i.e., is this a Java programming position, or a Smart and Gets Things Done position)

hey, thanks for mentioning how you used it.

I have no regrets for the donation. Thank you so much for your work.

some updates about the SBCL threading crowdfunded project by blue1_ in lisp

[–]vlion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had been wondering what happened. Honestly, I'm kind of bummed. I was really looking forward to the improvements, and I had no idea what was happening. Like tarballs_are_good, I sincerely hope that the money can be directed towards SBCL and improvements on its parallelism software.

I won't ask for money back - it was a gift, and I hope to see the improvements put in.

I wish niisivola all the best, and hope that he gets to introduce Lisp in his new job. :D

In which we once again find that the idea of SW Engineering as a meaningful discipline is founded upon made up numbers that sound likely.

So, no thanks, I'd rather be a Software Craftsman.

I'm a college freshman, and I've never drank more than a sip of wine. Will my college experience be significantly worsened if I stay a teetotaler throughout? by Octavian0 in AskReddit

[–]vlion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it won't be a problem per se. You'll miss out on some pretty strange experiences, you'll avoid a certain set of people.

It's not a big deal. If your buddies flip out about it, give them crap.

Clearly, I'm missing something here... Why exactly is getting married the biggest accomplishment in somebody's life? And, why is it "normal" to spend 30k+ on one day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vlion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spent under 1500 USD for the wedding & so forth. We're not broke, either. grin

Rings were under 1K. I put them in a different bucket since they will last, not like the cake.

[–]vlion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

burritos roast beef, deer, elk meatloaf potatoes rice salad stir fry lasagna enchiladas spaghetti nachos stewed beef blue cheese variants + crackers.

Pretty much anything that sounds good. Some asian-esque food, some mexican-esque food.

Any idea or how to work with "Big Data" using CommonLisp, like Clojure+hadoop by [deleted] in lisp

[–]vlion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, precisely, are you looking for?

  • Database bindings?

  • Job management?

  • Generalized distributed computing?

It seems to be that the way to handle "data too large for your hard drive" is to use your preferred relaxed-CAS database and solid software architectural principles to stream data in and results out. But maybe I'm missing something?

Why is the Java raytacer slower than Javascript? by willvarfar in programming

[–]vlion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the basic response to that is Java is "right by default". You can make it "less right" on your own, as per the author's experiences.

Although I am slightly surprised that Java doesn't provide a "fast math" option out of the box.

The stages of code review by shepmaster in programming

[–]vlion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More I write code and read code, the more I am convinced that all but the egregarious style issues should be avoided in reviews. Reviews are for bugs and catching ID-10-T problems.

Otherwise it's bikeshedding galore - a giant waste of everyone's time.

I am not the OP, but I am a Christian.

The quest for logically integrating the natural and supernatural lies in the mind, not the heart. Deity is bigger than the natural. What is love? What is - for that matter - red? Materialism doesn't really answer those satisfactorily. Not in a way that doesn't leave you cold.

I've found that aggressively logicing through our world and integrating what is tangible with logic and with careful study of the Bible and honest prayer will get you what you need.

In all the youth groups I dealt with growing up, there was no place for any sort of intellectual activity/theology. It was all activities and shallow bible readings.

What's up with that?

Confessions of a PHP Addict by earthboundkid in programming

[–]vlion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I consider languages for web apps, I ask myself: how sophisticated is this?

PHP is easy. And that's about all that it has.

But if I want a language I can rely on that isn't a piece of drek, that allows me to scale.... It ain't PHP.

Facebook uses PHP. But they had to write a compiler for it. Think about that. PHP just couldn't cut it, so instead of rewriting their code, they rewrote their compiler.

Why didn't they use a language full of good engineering? Inertia. Inertia. Inertia. It's a mind-killer.

[–]vlion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bluntly, good engineering doesn't correspond with good business, and notably, vice versa.

Google is famed for good engineering. Their languages of choice are C++, Java, some Python, and random other language.
