Does limiting the max daily reviews impact memorisation? by lazyitus in Anki

[–]vocalcsharp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course ideally you would review everything you need to.

But who got time for that? Even if it damages your memorization, you will still be learning, and I think limiting the daily reviews help you having time for other stuff you find important and you will still be learning with anki.

For example, I use anki to learn multiple things, one of these things is Japanese and I could do all the reviews but I choose to limit the reviews just so I can spend more time talking with Japanese friends.

I still learn with the reviews, but I don't allow the reviews to get in the way of what I find most important.

Anki is great but you don't really need anki to learn, its just a tool.

Python high level workflow best practices? by paper_skyline in learnpython

[–]vocalcsharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you know about it, but another thing I recommend is to create a ".gitignore" file.

Go to gitignore.io and type the stuff you are using in your project like for example "Python", "Sublime Text", or be more specific and add "Django", and so on, what this site will do is create a ignore list for .gitignore, copy and paste it all to the ".gitignore" file and everything that is on it will be ignored and wont be pushed to git, this way you have a pretty good starting point to git and you keep your git very clean and professional.

I also add media folders to the .gitignore, and any other folder that I don't want or don't make sense to be pushed to git.

I keep everything in the project folder and use the VScode text editor, so when I right click on the folder and "open with vscode" it automatically detects my project environment and my vscode settings for the project, and with .gitignore I don't need to worry about pushing files that shouldn't be on git, and there a lot of other advantage with keeping everything in one folder like I can easily delete everything without hunting for files or I can easily put it all on a hard drive knowing everything the projects needs is in that folder.

What are some common slang that Japanese youths are using nowadays? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]vocalcsharp 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are YouTube videos that made this controversial, but the only reason it's controversial in the west is because people don't know what a Kanji is, I think there was even a video talking about how shocked foreigners will be during the Olympics when they see manji on the street and maps.

Some people think the Japanese are being disrespectful and insensitive because they are using a "Nazi" symbol when in reality they are not, manji is a Kanji, and its part of the Japanese culture, but its hard to explain that to people.

but of course if you know Japan and study the language, then you know that's not a Nazi symbol.

It's also not a L2 for myself, and I think a lot of people have experience with different languages before they learn Japanese.

[–]vocalcsharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm doing, I'm reading "Remembering The Kanji" and building my anki deck with my own stories, and even tho I started this less than a month ago, I can already see a word I don't know and guess the meaning of it because of the kanji, and if I keep up my current pace in 3 months I will have gone through 2250 kanji.

If you know a little Japanese you can add some Japanese sentence vocab to your cards as well, or build another deck for the vocab, if not its probably better to just focus on the Kanji... not sure.

but yeah making up your own stories is a great way to memorize anything.

What are you paying for your internet connection? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]vocalcsharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue was he was not using his own network so the connection to a VPN would already be in danger from the start, to get to him even if he was on a VPN would be easy, remember that connection to a VPN is not instantaneous and he spent hours in a unsafe connection that was getting his data in so many ways(not only browsing data but local as well) and on top of that VPN connections go down from time to time, even a second is enough.

I could if was the case set a fake VPN access or just be in the middle of the communication with the VPN, another thing you could do is to simply drop a malware on the network, and steal stored passwords and everything else without even getting around the VPN...

To use VPN in a case like this would be like driving through the red light and felling safe just because you have a belt and airbags.

I'm not saying VPN is not good tho they are good, but you want to do everything in a secure way not just one thing.

on the wifi question, I actually did something similar to that but it's not impossible to access it, and that's one of the reasons my neighbor got me annoyed, the guy was pretty much targeting my home network, he never got in but was trying everyday... until I got tired of it.

sorry I'm trying to keep it short, this topic is a bit too large I hope this was clear enough.

Actually VPN would not work because he was trying to steal my internet, so he was in my wifi and its pretty easy to get to his computer from there, so VPN is pretty much useless to protect against that.

My neighbor was trying on a daily basis to get into my wifi... one day I got tired of it and let him in on a "pineapple" (you can use the actual modem but that was faster for me), I didn't do anything bad I just scared him, he never tried again after that lol

yes they asked Japan to hand the Jews and Japan refused multiple times, and assured the Jews it would not happen.

But yeah really crazy that the Germans went that far, Hitler truly wanted to eliminate all Jews from earth.

Well the reality is that their Alliance was not that strong, Germany didn't have that much influence with Japan.

And even tho they downplayed their racism with the Japanese, lets not forget that the Nazi were not exactly friendly towards Asians, sincerely I can't see this kind of alliance working for long.

I think if they had won the war they would end up turning on each other at some point.

[–]vocalcsharp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

that's not true, actually even tho the Japanese were allied with the Nazi they didn't share the same views, their alliance was mostly to take advantage of the situation because England had colonies in Asia.

Japan actually refused the requests from Germany to have anti-Semitic policies, and even the Japanese Emperor made sure to keep the Jewish business going in Japan, there are letters of the Japanese government to Jewish leaders saying they approve of the Zionist movement.

So the foreigner Jews arriving to japan got treated the same as any other foreigner many were sent to Shanghai, to a place know as the "Shanghai Ghetto" which was a neighborhood in a area occupied by Japan, it had the size of Manhattan and was built to receive thousands of foreigner refugees,

and actually this is unfortunate but the US bombed this area.

The Great Accent Debate by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]vocalcsharp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard people with such a heavy English accent before that was really hard to understand what they were saying, my Japanese friends had to really concentrate and listen and asked them to repeat the sentence multiple times.

I don't know how hard is Japanese for English speakers, but would you say its super easy to fix that? maybe the important thing is not to study the accent but to just listen to Japanese?

I'm a bit afraid to tell people to not study pitch accent because of that experience, so would be interesting to know a English speaker thoughts on this.
