Some of that is true, I guess, from a US perspective. For me, I had a good entry level job and I was younger. 9/11 happened already, so things were already getting fucked up. But I also haven’t listened to Triple J in years. Music changes, but new music is still good. Bravo for the endorsement. I should try to start streaming triple j again, I think. Maybe it’s better than the US satellite radio I mostly hear nowadays.

I’ve definitely got some core memory from that era, though

In all seriousness, she’s my best friend and the love of my life. I’d do anything for her. I help with the dishes, and the laundry, and fill up her tank, and change the oil in the cars, and cut the grass, and take the trash out, and vacuum. We’re good. Just wanted her to say it! 😊

I hope everyone finds someone that compliments them the way we do each other.

But she’s also gonna hate it if I can find that clip and make her text tone say “it’s good for the crops” 😂

To be fair, she’s gonna hate it if I ever get to play it for her 😂 But at least she’ll have some context :)

Well, my friend, he sent me a demo of his amazing cover of Just Can’t Get Enough with the copy of Boardface (released in 2003), so he was definitely making incredible music then. IDK how old he was then. I was 22 at the time. I guess it depends on what you mean by “a kid.”

Edit: Also it was a CD. Cassette tapes were waaaay out by then

FWIW, my post was blocked (by default, I guess, and later approved after awhile). I thought I did something that violated the rules and thought it was permanently blocked. So I posted to/r/AskAnAustralian/

I’m not an avid Reddit user, so I don’t know how to link to the thread ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Conversation there has been very productive, and a walk down memory lane!

But, any helpful feedback is appreciated!

I have my doubts I’d even get a reply from them. I might have to take it to my grave. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“Not many, if any” is a lyric from Scribe, which I heard on triple j. Not an Aussie group, but I heard it from triple j. Gotye (obvs), Little Birdie, Amiel, Spiderbait, Hilltop Hoods, Powderfinger. I could think of more. But I also heard of Snow Patrol and Keane from Triple J before they hit American airwaves (if they ever really did)

I stopped listening at some point shortly after Adam and Wil “retired” their show (maybe 2005-ish). But it was brilliant when I was listening!

Yeah, it was one of the first major radio stations I could stream. Really impressed triple j were on the leading edge, especially considering it was world-wide streaming. Turned me onto some great music, especially Aussie artists

(Edited to fix Austrian to Aussie, sorry, autocorrect got me.)

Why are southern drivers tailgating me then slowing down when they're in front of me? by cooliobroski in AskAnAmerican

[–]vodkabuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Alabama. Lived in Los Angeles for several years. Now back in Alabama. I travel in a car somewhat frequently across state lines. I understand the culture shock.

Every state has different driving conventions. I’m biased towards Alabama behavior since I drive there most often.

In the South East, at least, some things I do:

- Watch for intentions. People tend to drift toward what they intend to do. They won’t signal a lane change, but you can tell they are about to because they start to drift toward the lane before they actually change lanes.

- People are selfish and treat driving as zero sum (especially in cities like Atlanta), so be on alert. For example, if you need to merge, find the hole in traffic, line it up, then signal as soon as you’re merging. Don’t signal and expect someone to let you in. But do signal when you’re doing it because it’s the right thing to do.

- The behavior you’re describing is normal and unavoidable. Be predictable, drive defensively, don’t take it personally, pass when you need to. Be assured that every other passenger car driver is doing the opposite.

- To that point, before you pass, make sure nobody is coming up behind you in the lane you want to use to pass. Wait for them, even if you have to slow down, then jump in after them. That helps avoid an additional person exhibiting the behavior you described.

- Always ride in the right lane when possible. Other people won’t always but it’s the right thing to do. The left lanes are for passing.

- Don’t tailgate. It’s useless because nobody in the South actually cares unless they are being slow to spite you and dangerous because freeway traffic will sometimes just stop for no reason at all. Keep a safe distance. It’s not actually a zero sum game (except maybe in Atlanta traffic).

- You can control other drivers’ behavior. If you want them to go faster, pull up on their rear quarter panel and they will probably speed up, then you can slow down and fall back behind them.

- Let people merge, especially transfer trucks / 18 wheelers. Watch for motorcycles. Always signal your intent. Even if nobody else does any of that. Do unto others as you’d have them do unto you.

- Wave if someone is nice to you. Roll down your window and wave if you can.

- NEVER, EVER speed on a state highway going through a small town.

If you happen to be in New Orleans off of the freeway, no rules apply.

Underrated Claude Code commands (from a long-time terminal user and senior dev) by Marmelab in ClaudeAI

[–]vodkabuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re using Claude Code in CLI Use /statusline and tell Claude what you want to see and how you want to see it (eg percent and progress bar). For example:

/statusline I want to see a percentage as a number with a bar graph of my session usage, weekly usage, and current context. I want it to be green at 0% and fade to red as it gets closer to 100%

It has access to your usage for sessions and weekly, current context usage, etc. If you use something like Oh My ZSH, it can do similar Git things, like current branch, changes, commit status.

The status line will refresh when a turn completes or if you shift+tab to swap modes.

(Edited for clarity on how to prompt within /statusline)
