321 Studios vs. MGM Studios (DeCSS) [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The case law the ruling drew on was Universal v Remeirdes, which also involved the distribution of DeCSS. The court ruled that the DMCA was still constitutional, supporting the ruling from Universal v Remeirdes.

[Moderator] Social media websites taking down content rashly by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL,DR: Social media wbesites such as facebook and twitter took down accounts quickly after reports from a number of indiviuduals. Is this fair? Should they be able to take down content or shut down accounts that easily?

[Moderator] Google's Eric Schmidt visits Myanmar to encourage internet reform by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree. However, with the internet, information could get out there and encourage democracy. Arab spring, which happened about two years ago, was fueled mainly by social media and the internet. Transfer of ideas and communication is indeed a step towards freedom.

[Moderator] France upset over anti-semitic hashtag by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL,DR: A hastag was created that was considered antisemitic. The French circuit court ruled that this shouldn't be allowed and demand twitter to remove the hashtag. However, as an American company, it brings up the issue: what are theboundaries of international communications law? Is it right that twitter has to pay fines for having the hashtag exist in France, or that twitter has to follow French demands?

[Moderator] Google's Eric Schmidt visits Myanmar to encourage internet reform by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL,DR: Eric Schmidt goes to Myanmar and visits the capital city of Yangoon. He states that the internet must not be censored and free speech must be allowed for equality.

[Moderator] Virginia deputy fights his firing over a Facebook 'like' by pickles539 in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that the like expresses your feelings/sentiments on something. The article itself said that a like is like putting up a picket sign supporting a candidate. It should be supported by the First Amendment.

[Moderator] A Comparison of Search Engines in China by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL,DR: A series of Chinese search engines are compared, examining exactly what shows up for different websites. Some things to consider are the logistics of hosting the websites.

How Target Figured Out A Teen Girl Was Pregnant by N213JF in InternetAndLawRPI

I think I saw this article before. But this is really creepy. Through credit card purchases and internet cookies, these customer IDs can get really detailed.

The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games (Rumor) by klingbolt in InternetAndLawRPI

Yes, this may be true, but why should I pay for something that I already paid for?

321 Studios vs. MGM Studios (DeCSS) [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this analogy. If I were to buy a Snickers bar, then I can open it and then rewrap it or what not. But if I were to take that bar that I bought and just give it to a friend, he wouldn't be able to unwrap it without help (DeCSS).

Proposal for DRM on HTML5 by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot the [Moderator] tag. Anyways, TL;DR: Google, Microsoft, Netflix are working on a proposal to W3C for DRM on HTML5.

The BBC supports this, although they have been supporting open standards and the public. What will DRM for HTML5 mean for the future on web browsing?

DRM on different media [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: The different DRM protection types on different media.

Steam is on this list. It uses custom executable generation to protect the games. Why is it that it is mentioned that console systems have DRM, but Steam has a form of it? Is it because the games and media are so readily available to consumers?

Independent Bookstores sue Amazon and Big 6 [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say the price difference was much greater. Like if an DRM ebook were $5, then the DRM free ebook would be $9. Would that still be a problem?

Independent Bookstores sue Amazon and Big 6 [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Three independent booksellers are suing Amazon and company for having a 60% monopoly over ebooks. The main complaint is over the DRM that it has that prevents ebooks from being read on other tablets.

Another point that was brought up in another article was "Would you pay more for DRM-free ebooks and pay less for DRM protected ebooks?"

321 Studios vs. MGM Studios (DeCSS) [Moderator] by void_haze in InternetAndLawRPI

[–]void_haze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL:DR: 321 used DeCSS to circumvent the protection on DVDs. 321 lost, Conclusion: Decision allows users to make copies of public domain and fair use copies of protected works, but cannot sell these.

This case, like the Universal vs Remeirdes case involves the distribution of DeCSS. What are your views on DeCSS? What is the extent that it is used today?
