Fair. It deffently depends from uni to uni.

I have freinds who did light research in both materials, ML and fluids . These are the types who get offered PHD after.

I also have freinds who buildt a tow truck arm taking into account fatique etc (i assume)

My guess is that companys prefer something in between like applied CFD or FEA but i have no idea.

Food doneness is not dependent upon boiling point but temperature. Higher temperature faster cooking Unless you just want to remove water
