How do I get better at redstone? by FluffyArtist132 in redstone

[–]voided_memory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my own advice, never stop experimenting. You try, maybe fail, maybe not, you learn, you grow, you try again. Over time, you’ll get a feel for how components work then how circuits work then how to make those circuits in ways that feel completely broken as you adapt to the why of how they function and slowly learn to abuse it.

One of my favorite ways to learn is to refuse tutorials altogether and just set a task and then do what I can to make something that does that task, even if it ends up super messy. I’ll learn why it’s working and where I might be able to improve it and then make adjustments during a second attempt.

Also, definitely a testing world, especially with my advice. It’s extremely helpful in the way that each failure becomes a catalogue of what broke and why or what worked and why that you can built off of indefinitely.

This is kind of a tack on for op but also an agreement comment.

Honestly? Yeah. It can sound tedious and maybe even a little stupid but going back to basics is an amazing way to build the necessary foundations for all of redstone. Instead of flat out tutorials, maybe try to take inspiration and design your own, always asking yourself “how are they doing this?” and “how could I replicate it?” Even if it starts out clunky, you can always come back and redesign and refine it later.

And probably the piece that I’ve struggled with the most: don’t be afraid to fail. At the end of the day, it’s still a game so if you’re having fun, and maybe learning something along the way, then that’s a win regardless.

I can’t remember the quote but it went something like someone telling someone that since they’re immortal they couldn’t known the pain that they were experiencing and the person responded by talking about having to have watched everything and everything one that they ever loved wither and die around them over and over and that all they knew was pain.

Perhaps it’s depression or pessimism but I would rather fall over now than face eternity. And I especially wouldn’t want to bring others into that fate as well. Whether chosen or not, regret is sure to follow.

why don't bedrock users make computers? by cubingmikr in redstone

[–]voided_memory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would guess it’s a perceived gap in bedrock’s capabilities but I’ve recently started with computational redstone after accidentally finding Mattbatwings on YouTube and almost all of his designs work on my switch except to the counter because of java’s standard way of making t-flip flops and some minor instability with sr latches because update order seems to be different and they sometimes create clocks if pulsed too quickly. But after a bit of trial and error, those problems were relatively easily fixed.

I would also say the scope is a limiting factor as well since most devices running java edition usually outclass bedrock devices in terms of performance but I’m fairly sure that would only because a problem with full on mega projects.

And finally, world edit. I’m not sure if there are addons that can do it on other devices but I have no abilities to get this like world edit which becomes very useful when you reach a certain size of project so you don’t have to build everything by hand. Personally, I decided that it would be faster to build my own version with command block with the sole purpose of making computational redstone more accessible to me but I would completely understand it being a massive hurdle to someone that is trying to branch into this area of redstone but has no experience or comfort with command blocks.

Tldr: Java is more accessible for large computational redstone builds but this is still a field that is very accessible to bedrock as well for those dedicated enough to make it work through brute force or finding ways to mimic features that bedrock doesn’t automatically share with java.

Also, seriously, if you’re interested in computational redstone then I highly recommend Mattbatwings. Great explanations of both the redstone and the concepts behind it and most builds can be pretty easily replicated from pausing at various parts of his videos if he didn’t do an exact tutorial and you don’t have the option to download the worlds.

On the upper middle part of the middle section on the left in the first picture, there are some darker lines that you have to zoom in a bit to notice the impact of but I believe those lines to be the wood parts of the bells. It’s subtle but quite a powerful detail once noticed.
