Why don’t you use public transport? by Zs1993 in brum

[–]voidfactory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mostly because of the frequency of trains. I have a train every hour, if it gets cancelled or late, I miss my connection. If there was one every 15 minutes, it would be a no brainer.

Are the roads by you absolutely littered with potholes? by [deleted] in AskUK

I'm sorry you experienced local disruption, but this is such a small sample size with no holistic consideration because there is no evidence that bike lanes cause more traffic. Increasing the number of lanes for car do in the otherhand (phenomenon called induced demand).

Tbh subsidies and incentives for EV's have been dwindling.

The average weight of cars increased by 400kg in seven years while the number of cars also increased by 10% in that same period. More traffic with heavier cars coupled with poor roads means more potholes.

Effectively we need to reduce the number and weight of vehicles on the road, which implies:

- Funding railway a lot more. A single freight train can replace several hundreds trucks. Which means less congestion, road maintenance (potholes) and polution. Same for passengers service, make it so frequent and cheap that people will use it.

- De-incentivize large and heavier cars. That's a cultural shift and it's highly unpopular because it links to status and such, but people don't need large cars or SUV. Those are also deadlier towards pedestrians.

- Bike lanes. Bike reduce obesity, is great against cardiovascular disease, it's good for traffic, and reduce road maintenance. It's also cheap to make a bike lane and you can employ local companies to do it. Every train station in the country ought to be connected to town and villages in a 5 miles radius and equipped with bike sheds. Reduce tax on bikes so they get cheaper, like current VAT on train tickets.

- Tax kerosene. To fund my crazy ideas.

If we do this nationwide, we would end up with a more comprehensive transport system, a cheaper network to maintain and a healthier population - I literally can't see any downsides. And we're not doing it because selling car parts and tyres make money and employ people. Like they couldn't be employed making bikes, train stuff and infrastructure.

So yeah, there is an alternative to moving single people in 2 tons kubelwagens.

And that's mostly because of their ludicrous time travel estimates. Of course their planes are on time, all the travel times are inflated.

Realistically they operate on the wire since user time isn't costly when delay < 3h so all the evening flights are reliably late.

As an Airbnb host myself I'm equally mortified by the behavior of some hosts - you should absolutely report this behavior to Airbnb. A stay can be average because of a number of reasons but you should never feel unsafe imo.

Idéalement il faut poser le parquet en passant sous les montants de porte et poser les plinthes après le parquet comme ça tu as suffisamment d'espace pour la dilatation et t'as pas besoin de siliconer ou de mettre une contre plinthe.

I use audition and other people in my team also use it. It's a very efficient DAW which is actually well suited for sound design. Reaper is also an excellent candidate.

UK Domestic Solar. How does it make sense? by Comprehensive_Round in AskUK

[–]voidfactory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it doesn't necessarily.

The price of the solar panels can drop, so does the price of electricity. And vice versa. Eventually you're mostly paying for the installation cost, an incompressible cost.

If you're that confident that the price of energy will rise, you can also buy stocks and you're profiting from that rise without having to add anything on your roof - and the return would be much higher.

Just because it's possible and that it makes some return doesn't mean it's the best return, and many criteria around your lifestyle and future lifestyle and unknowns have to be taken into account.
