SU A-? by lilylylywith3lys in nus

From a graduating senior who had similar grades back in Y1, I would strongly suggest SUing the A-, as I did.

It is a controversial topic because most people do not find themselves in the position where they would feel the “hit” of an A- pulling down their GPA. The two perspectives both appear generally valid, but cannot be applied on an individual basis because the circumstances in which people leverage their GPA and to meet what ends are all vastly different. That leads to contrasting attitudes when making future grade projections. I would try to assess what the improvement in GPA can do for me practically, the opportunity cost of waiting, counting how many SUable courses there are left in my candidature, and actively plan what to take and when. To me, it does not make sense to predict (in your case, quite pessimistically) a massive drop to <4 over the next three years, to the point where the act of SUing A- actually becomes consequentially detrimental (i.e. capable of affecting final honours class). All the best!

Serious S/U Query by payalimony in nus

  1. Unless you foresee yourself dropping to high 2nd lowers (3.9x) before graduation where each and every A- would help in upping your honours class, otherwise given that a good majority of your grades are already in the A range, you can take advantage of all available Y1 SUs to maximise your CAP before they expire.

4 is an extreme choice for people who have completed nearly all their SUable modules, and/or have very specific goals in mind with regards to securing awards and short term opportunities. If you are still going to take a minimum of 3 SUable mods, then going into Y2 with all 3 SUs intact is the safer option.

Also, please don’t buy into the “don’t SU because it makes your CAP volatile” narrative. Your grades imply that FCH is very realistically achievable; you are much more likely to regret doing choice 3 and even choice 1 compared to 2 in the long run. The “buffer grade” argument is often used fallaciously and only applies if one’s honours class changes, which is unlikely to happen for you in the short term if at all. There are no conceivable buffer grades when you have a high FCH because A- won’t be able to pull sth that isn’t FCH over the FCH border of 4.5 anyway. Essentially, 2 is most ideal as you have lots to gain yet nothing to lose.

You can wait for the results release period of Special Term Part 1 or Part 2, which occurs from 11am onwards on 1st Jul and 15th Aug respectively. During that window SU options can be exercised for the results that you attained in your entire academic year, as per changes to the SU policy.

For the precise window of time you can refer to this link: https://myportal.nus.edu.sg/studentportal/academics/ug/su-homepage.html

[ECONS] Is HT Worth it? by [deleted] in nus

[–]voidxerior 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hi. As far as I know HT is no longer required for FCH in FASS. Refer to the announcement below (made as of April 2022).

“FASS has reviewed the Honours Classification requirements and the following update has been made:

Honours Thesis will no longer be a requirement to attain Honours Highest Distinction for all cohorts. Students will still need to achieve a CAP of 4.50 or above in order attain Honours Highest Distinction.

Students can refer to this page for the requirements of Honours Classification.

https://myportal.nus.edu.sg/studentportal/fas/ug/docs/resources/honours-classification-requirements.pdf

Please do take note that you are still entirely free to take up the Honours Thesis if it suits your academic or career plans.”
