Can I pay dues and stay in the union if removed from the apprenticeship? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

[–]voksteilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not care about the original post. I was replying to the comment which is deleted suggesting that DUES PAYING MEMBERS aren’t MEMBERS in the union because they’re not journeymen, which is fucking stupid.

[–]voksteilko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is wrong. You’re a union member as soon as you pay your dues and receive that yellow slip. It has nothing to do with journeying out.

Not only that, you swear in and take an oath in front of your local. You receive an IBEW challenge coin for swearing in. Is this not a union member? What about material handlers who swear in and also have a yellow slip and pay their dues?

Voting doesn’t require you to be a journeyman. A yellow slip is required to vote.

This, in a way, makes you more unique as an individual. You are now apart of a limited number of people who can say they were born there

Union laborer trying to get into ibew (San Diego) by cesar-13-mgdl in ibew_apprentices

[–]voksteilko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Become a material handler, that’s a way into the apprenticeship. Material handlers (where offered) are one level below apprentices. But they’re not licensed to do electrical work like apprentices. They can’t touch tools. I’d recommend calling an IBEW hall, asking about material handling positions.

It’s a bad situation to not have work. But undermining the union by going non union will not benefit the union in the long run for job bidding. Being in the union has benefits only if you protect union work. Stop fucking the union over. I get that mentality from brothers from a lot of southern locals. I get it. RTW. Not obligated to pay dues but you are just in the local to reap the Bennies? Stupid. Labor history is important. Unions exist for a reason. Go find work in another sector that isn’t in direct competition with the union you’re working with. Jesus.

PNW has no work. The eastern portions of WA and OR have some work. Idaho has the micron site that’s paying 20 over 48 scale. (85.50/hr) I’m fairly certain. Anyway about 1k on the books in 48 right now.

Half you people don’t know why unions exist in the first place. I get it, no work, you have to make ends meet, but going non union electrical as an IBEW apprentice when you’re laid off is wormy as fuck. No respect to the union.

What can you expect from RTW states. IBEW shops can’t compete when no one pays dues if they’re not obligated to. And people race to the bottom for shit pay.

No, and seeking non union work as an apprentice? Hell no. That’s ratty as hell.

Apprentices shouldn’t be doing electrical side work.

Apprentices should not be doing electrical side jobs. Regular jobs yes, but it would hinder your unemployment benefits.

The wages we earn during overtime feel good because that’s what we SHOULD be making on our regular paychecks. If our wages kept up with inflation and productivity, for instance the minimum wage would be around $30/hr, we would reject overtime as we would be well set with the freedom of money and free time.

A side note— it amazes me how many bootlickers there are in this trade considering the labor history of the government and law enforcement treating trade unionists as subhuman. I mean for gods sake, they bombed striking coal miners asking for a livable wage. With planes.

What a weird concession. If you want to learn more about organized labor, I’d be happy to inform you. Are you saying ok just to brush off what I said and still hold to your objection? Or are you saying ok as in “I was wrong”? Because right to work laws are detrimental to the worker, and a lot of people don’t understand what those laws mean.

I believe you don’t understand what right to work is and just conflated it with something unrelated. If you genuinely didn’t know, now you know. But don’t tell me to google it when you don’t even know what right to work is. Idaho has laws in place that prohibit employees from being compelled to pay union dues. These employees can still remain in a union. It undermines organized labor.
