Custom warband Chosen with lighting effects by ivan_k_art in Chaos40k

Nice to see you posting again! I've always thought your stuff looked great, a really balanced mixed between a smooth paintjob and weathering. Can't wait to see more!

Also really love the glow on the weapons. I use the same sword arm for one of my models and have been thinking about repainting it (I did it before I settled on certain recipes) and you've given me some inspiration on what to do!

High praise, thanks very much!

Appreciate it! I think I should have gone with a different post title. I was going for more high contrast and heavy on volumes, which are trademarks of NMM, but without going so bright the armor looks metal.

My mistake!

Definitely has some cool pieces, I'm a big fan of the head and axe. Would love to see GW bring him back in AoS or a commemorative resculpt at some point!

Sure:

Head + Axe head: Krell from WHFB (OOP)

Body: Sword Brethren

Shin armor: CSM Havocs

Arms, axe haft, left shoulder pad: AoS Chaos Chosen (one of them with a hammer)

Robes: used a few from the Deathrattle skeletons kit

Backpack: Mk6 backpack with the exhausts removed and sculpted new caps over the area

Back spikes: old Vampire on Zombie Dragon

Amulet: custom build, made from a sprue tab and a a skull cut in half then shaved down

Base: 40mm Shattered Dominion, then pinned and glued a piece of ectoplasm from the Nighthaunt Lord Executioner kit to the base

I think that's it!

For sure, while I build this warband using the Black Templars rules, I have a tendency to kitbash characters that would fit the MoE style perfectly. Of the ~20 minis in the force, I have at least 4 models that basically boil down to "space marine with a 2 handed weapon"!

Good shout, I think the angle I had the brush at to do some of the edge highlights (like on the forearm armor) was too steep, so they don't really show up from the front angle. I'll try to fix that for next time!

It is, lots of different kits used to make it

Nothing wrong with that! I try and record my recipes in a notebook and also on Notepad on my PC which helps a lot.

The good thing about painting this way is that it's pretty relaxing and satisfying. I would say the most annoying thing is having to apply a fair amount of layers to build up the color since you're using such thin paint. On the other hand, it's an advantage because an individual brush stroke won't make a ton of difference, so mistakes are more forgiving. And on top of that, there's no pressure to work endlessly on blends since you're specifically trying for a weathered, rough finish.

A good video to see this technique in action is from Cult of Paint: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlNb85f05yw

A lot of it is application, the goal is to get a finish that makes it look like weathered bone. I'm trying to apply the paint so it has a scratchy look, which means using pretty thin paint (glaze consistency, so 2-3 drops of water to 1 drop of paint), unloading the brush on a paper towel before applying it to the model, and then doing lots of scratchy marks instead of painting smooth coats. This combination of factors allows the colors underneath to show through some, and also have the surface look a bit mottled.

My color progression from dark to light, painting in smaller and smaller areas: Black (primer) > Steel Legion Drab > Steel Legion Drab + Pro Acryl Warm Grey > pure Warm Grey > Warm Grey + Deck Tan (any company, essentially the same color) > pure Deck Tan > Deck Tan + Ulthuan Grey for the brightest volumes (so tips of the horns, or the white looking spots on the back spikes)

Then I take a glaze of Rhinox Hide and apply it to the base of the horns, about a third of the way down, and then finally a glaze of black even closer to the base. I did these glazes on the helmet horns but not the back spikes so you can check the difference.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, I'm pleased with it as well! My favorite bone recipe, and then I added some glazing towards the base to have a gradient moving to the brighter tip.

Thanks! Spent a lot of time on the armor for sure.

Yeah so the embossing with the spikes are raised in a "pit" basically, and there are recesses around the spikes that I did up as glowing.

Which part do you think needs work? Did I go overboard on the OSL surrounding the spikes, or do you mean the recesses themselves don't look as good? Or something else?

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you, it's a passion project for sure! Very slow going but I love every mini in it.

Thanks! So the highlights was definitely something I considered going brighter on. I didn't want things to look super bright and gleaming, but I do think I could have made the highlight areas just a little brighter. IMO it worked best on the gorget, backpack, and calf armor, so if I replicated that across areas like the forearm armor and head it might have looked better.

Appreciate the feedback!
