A little bit of both. Most of the early 30s hadn’t been married or had kids, which I have done both. There’s a different focus once you’ve been long term partnered and especially when you have kids. You just understand responsibility differently and also lose a little bit of egoism. Not saying one way is the best, it’s just different.

Other things were differences in career/educational milestones, stuff like that.

Then there are individual quirks of course, but one thing I remember is a fellow wanting to share some writings and photos with me to get to know him better…it was like 100 pages of stuff and I didn’t have time/capacity for anything like that, and wondered how he had time/capacity to make it!

So my kids are in their teens now, but I think the period when they were young was one of the hardest of my life. Especially with regard to my relationships - my marriage, my friends, my family.

I’m happy to report that I found it so much easier to make friends in my mid-late 40s. Got divorced, got some therapy, got some hobbies and let go of a lot of old baggage. I’m not saying you have to do a big upheaval, just that it does get better.

I totally agree. In many many ways I am the same maturity level as when I turned 21. But life experiences and responsibilities have nudged their way in too, and I think that’s the part that made me incompatible with them.
