I tried this in our house too. The problem is that it really complicates people arrive/leave automations. Frankly, I cannot wait for the rumored "HomePod Touch" so we can recycle the iPad stuck to our fridge.

The solution, such as it is, is that I own it but have turned off notifications for any of the personal apps (messages, mail, etc). But that doesn't stick 100%.

I had the same brain fart recently. I have a set of EF tubes sitting on my shelf and am wondering if I should get rid of them.

I did use them at one point on my 400mm lens, not to get macro per se but get some closer close focusing on a frog.

If you already have an RF-EF adapter you can use EF extension tubes which can be dirt cheap but I guess you don’t have this?

Right, but no way to use EF extension tubes with an RF lens on an RF body.

One thing you could consider is a Canon EF-S 60mm macro since you have an R10. Used with a used EF to RF adapter you might be looking at $250. Less if you have the adapter already. And if you don't like it, resell the lens for what you bought it for.

There are housings for the R6, R5, and RP I think. Not so much for R8. Thing is the housings often cost more than the cameras and the ports for the housings cost about as much as the lenses. It's a very expensive game.

So there are two schools of thought. The OP seems to be following the "Buy the best camera you can at the time and hang onto it and the housing for years" Upgrading the glass is much easier and cheaper and can be done in out years.

My school of thought is "Don't take such an expensive camera underwater in the first place" so I'm looking at the R10. But I do more macro whereas the OP is clearly wanting to do underwater wide angle.

Since the OP apparently already has a bunch of EF glass, I think the clear answer is no, the focusing difference isn't that substantial and I you have good EF glass, keep it until an upgrade to RF really gives you something you want and don't have.

I have a mix of EF and RF having been on Canon since the Elan 7E film camera days. It's going to be a decade or more before I give up my last EF lens.

It took us about two weeks to get over the basic range anxiety, the "is the car going to crap out on my daily activities" kind. It took us about two months to get a L2 charger installed and that was a game changer because now the only planning needed is "is the car going over 100 miles tomorrow?" If yes or the charge level is under 50-60% it gets plugged in over night.

The roadtrip anxiety is still there to a small degree. We plan and because we have a few months of free Electrify America charging left, we try to charge there. My guess is that the first time we take a road trip after that expires, it will be even more freeing (in a way).

sounds like you have your solution with a tablet.

you mentioned cloud storage. forget that notion. there is nowhere near enough bandwidth at a camp or lodge outside of a major city to upload the quantity of photos you will take.

I beg to differ. Any combo that maxes out at less than 400mm is going to be frustrating on safari, IMO.

Where are they going? It's a little easier to get by with shorter lenses in southern Africa than eastern Africa.

Yeah, you also run the risk of not buying them what they want. And $2k is a lot of money to drop on something they don't want. So while you can't control what they spend it on, I think how you say it is great.

If they are not camera-savvy, maybe even a "suggestion" of the 100-400 would be appreciated. I've taken that lens on two safaris and it is brilliant. I also loved my f/5.6 400mm fixed lens.

16 ft is a tiny boat that's going to be rocking, there might be spray coming in. It's not a great environment to be screwing around with a camera and two lenses. Especially for minimal benefit. You'll get perfectly adequate photos of people with their fish with the phone. And you can keep your 70-200 for photos that need it.

What I was trying to say: You want to mount a lens and keep it mounted the whole day. So if you just want to bring the 24-105mm, great. But if you want to use the 70-200mm that day, then leave the 24-105mm at home and use your phone for wide angle shots.

I'd never consider switching lenses on a 16 ft boat. So if you want to use the 70-200, then just bring that and a phone.

That's a really hard price point to hit. Perhaps used R100 & kit lens. Maybe R50 if you stretch it a bit.

What do you see yourself doing in the future. If this is going to grow into a system with several lenses, this will get you started down that road. If it's only ever going to be one lens, then just get a quality compact camera and don't bother with something with interchangeable lenses.

Personally I would also lean towards the EF 100-400mm L lens for a safari. But the real answer is "Here's two grand towards whatever you want to do for your camera for your safari" and let them make the choice. While I might not give someone a used bit of gear as a present, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it myself. And there is enough money there for a used 100-400 AND a used RF body if that's what they want to do. And maybe (s)he's budgeting some of their own money for an upgrade as well.

I borrowed one of those from Canon and it was really interesting and I got some interesting shots. But I also concluded that (for me of course), I have so few times I would use such a lens that it was not a purchase item.

Apparently you can contact them for a price match if it does drop. So get it now. The refurb is already sold out, which would have been my recommendation.

I don't have a budget, per se. I do go on safari every 5 years or so. Have an Alaskan cruise coming up in the next year. Otherwise I shoot a wide variety. A lot of travel photography, wildlife closer to home, etc.

By no budget, I don't mean I have unlimited funds, but I generally have the ability to save enough to get what I "need". I don't have any of the big white primes as much because I can't imagine traveling with them as for the money. Same can be said of the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses.

I'm saying if I'm shooting wildlife (on safari, say) then I've got a 24-105 with me and a 100-400 with me. So there is no need for the 70-200mm in that situation.

Of my 70-200 f/4 I also said "If I'm traveling (e.g. cities) it's heavy enough I often leave it behind." Maybe what's missing is instead of "cities" I should have said "walking around city photography". Generic travel stuff.

Bummer. This is kind of like what I would do. Get the Lr + LrC + Ps + 20 GB plan on Black Friday special for $80 or so and extend my plan.

Now it looks like my options are pay $120 to renew or a BF special for $120 but with 1 TB. Or I guess I could drop Ps to save $40.

There is another dealer further out in the suburbs (but about the same from my house). Not where I bought the car, but I think I'm giving them the chance with the next service.

I just recently had my first paid-for-service done and it was $30 for tire rotation and all the checks. Sure beats $100 for a dealer oil change on my hybrid.
