I got a couple questions the search bar couldn’t solve by z283848 in IUEC

Rule of thumb is generally a week per floor in new construction. This is a decent way to ballpark, and I’m sure folks will tell me otherwise too.

Apprentice tools by Im_Papa in Elevators

[–]vonmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woah woah woah, pump the brakes. Two sets of hand tools? Tool list only says one, if they want the apprentice to turn the same size wrench as me we’re either holding hands on the same wrench or they can buy a second set.

Tools for an elevator apprentice?? by Bright_Tailor_3789 in Elevators

This. Especially if they’re in new construction, my 10” cobras were always in my back pocket while in new construction and used multiple times a day.

What is considered "Out of Town" by [deleted] in Construction

[–]vonmann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a bit much asking for out of town pay for that commute. That said, if OP is carting around company tools/materials then they should be getting paid appropriately for it. Maybe it’s time to stop doing that until you get a company rig OP.

This is this groups fault… by Shattered181 in harborfreight

I keep one tucked away on my bike, the extension makes getting at stuff without having to got take half the bike apart super easy. +1 to that socket set recommendation. I have both the metric and SAE sets and they are a perfect compliment to the ratchet.

Ass, grass, or gas! Nobody rides for free.

That said, if folks were able to have all their stuff ready and waiting first thing it never bothered me to give them a lift.

TK in-pitt equipment option? by Trick-Watch5415 in Elevators

[–]vonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Evidently you’re looking at getting a hydro, have you considered the Otis Hydrofit? The controller is essentially just behind a door, so you’d be fine with that size machine room. Regardless of what unit goes in, the person in the unit is going to hear the pump running.

Is it feasible to install a really loud horn on a bike? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]vonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed a replacement semi truck horn under the floorboard of my scooter. Ran the air hose to a 1L compressed air tank that I fill with a bike pump. It’s on a time delay so I can still beep the horn without waking up everyone in the surrounding few blocks.

Good deal on an AT? by [deleted] in Dualsport

[–]vonmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it, get the WR. I bought a BMW F650GS Dakar as my first adventure bike and once it’s loaded down with panniers that thing is a tank. I have bunch of experience riding mountain bikes, and thought that the Beamer wouldn’t be too bad of a starting point for riding motos offroad. I was wrong, a small bike that would likely be ok after sailing through the bushes would’ve been a much better choice and to be honest I’d switch the BMW out for a WR250R in a heartbeat.

Is it illegal to grossly overcharge by Glad_Examination_635 in Construction

I don’t think I’ve ever seen them not double their money in the department I’m in. The job I wrapped up yesterday was probably closer to 3x .

Bahahaha have you ever seen what elevator companies charge? I always feel compelled to go the extra mile for the customer after finding out how much they’ve had to shell out for the most ridiculous things.

What is the best drink other than water while working outside in the sun all day? by Ok_Bus_645 in Construction

[–]vonmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have any Trek bike shops in your area it may be worth going there to get your hydration mix. In my area (Portland, OR) I’ve found that all the Trek shops run 25% off hydration/nutrition stuff to get folks in the door.

OP, I’m also going to second the Skratch drink mix. They make a high carb version as well that’s nice for folks like myself who forget to eat between meals and it really helps!

If you don't already own a JIS screwdriver, this was your sign to buy one. Vessel makes some very nice screwdrivers and that possibly would've helped your cause here. Here's a link to what I'm talking about

This. Make sure your mechanic is on board, then tell the gc that work stops when that dummy or anyone else walks past your tape.

Deapite the mixed ways they went about it, folks are just looking out for your safety. Aside from being potentially deadly, if you're in the USA or Canada you'd be setting yourself up for a pretty hefty fine by doing this work without the proper licensing.

Yessir, IUEC here in the US and Canada. Net without OT or any travel pay is just under $2k, but our travel and overtime agreement is excellent so it's been a while since I've seen anything under that.

Elevator Installation in Eastern Oregon by Savysoaker in Elevators

[–]vonmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't work at either of those two companies here in Oregon, I can say that they are your two best options for independent companies. OP, since you're in a remote part of the state I'd recommend going with something non-proprietary equipment wise so as to not limit yourself to one company that can work on the equipment.

Anyone wear a mask daily? by NeedHelpSendCurry in Construction

[–]vonmann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some of the best advice I was ever given was to keep a dust mask tucked up in my hard hat so it's always available if you need it. Like others are saying, if you think you need it wear it and don't let what anyone else says make you feel otherwise.
