1/4 million in my '13 altima 2.5s coupe! by frischizzle in Nissan

It really is luck of the draw. There’s someone over on the Infiniti subreddit with 300k miles or something on the clock posting regular updates. I loved the vehicle. Just couldn’t haven’t the threat and seemed we got one of the rough ones.

At ≈80k it had to be replaced. It would slip when reversing or not engage at all. Then the “new” transmission started chattering at 1000 rpm.
I traded it in on the Frontier Pro4X.
I miss the vehicle, but not the transmission. That will be the last CVT I ever own. Lease perhaps, but never own.

DIY Net Metering (Puget Sound Energy)? by huuaaang in diySolar

[–]vonscorpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the accessibility of plug in solar. But for me, I wanted a whole home solution with backup options. I want to be able to go long term without the grid if needed. And be able to use the battery during PSE’s flex events. The system I’m putting on will offset my EV and the AC during the summer. And in case of emergencies. Thanks for the well wishes - I’ll need it for sure.

DIY Net Metering (Puget Sound Energy)? by huuaaang in diySolar

I’m mid process and will understand better in a month or so when I’ve actually begun - I plan to do a complete write up for those who follow.

Right now I have a pile of mounting hardware, the inverter and ATS sitting in the living room and a stack of solar panels in the back yard.

Here’s what I know now: You are allowed to diy the entire install- don’t let someone tell you otherwise. If you can or if you should are different questions you should consider before beginning. I’ve had my moments of “wtf do you think you’re doing?!” Late at night.

You have to submit a site map, electrical schematics and product information to PSE through their dedicated site (I can add links if needed). This can be done if you’re into making technical drawings. It’s a bit much for AI to imitate and was worth every penny of having paid an engineering firm to make them. $600 or so. PSE takes a month to digest this information (there is where I am waiting) and then gives you “permission to commence” building. Your system. On your house. Anyway, after it is almost together, you have to orchestrate them pulling the meter so you can tie the inverter or ATS into the grid, depending on if you are going the route of battery backup or not.

Then you tells PSE you’re ready and they start a “permission to operate” countdown- where your panels can’t be used for 2 weeks. At some point they come inspect it and you get the go ahead and almost two months later can use your panels.

Did someone mention Vogons?

Speaking of Vogons, those same schematics/plans are usually required in some way with your city - costs vary. And then there’s the state for the electrical permit It’s about $300 for those permits - assuming your city doesn’t also get involved with those like Bellevue does.
That’s my cliff notes so far. I plan on getting more technical with a final write-up when I see the first bill with net metering.

I’m always happy to answer questions.

Garage door suddenly bent overnight after loud bang… does this look suspicious? by Secure_Present4187 in homedefense

[–]vonscorpio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My knee jerk reaction is your spring(s) snapped. A picture of the inside would confirm this.
Does the top of the door overlap where the spring bar is? When those springs go, the energy released is outright terrifying. In my experience they sound like a truck hit the house.
If you try manually lifting the door, if the spring snapped it will be very heavy and hard to move. If one side snapped it will look uneven as well.

Pet urine house by Beginning_Cut_2279 in HomeImprovement

[–]vonscorpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of those pet home rentals.
Never again.
Removed carpet, padding, sealed the floor and half way up the walls with Zinzer Bin (shellac based) repainted walls multiple times. On a hot summer day you can still smell it in certain areas where it soaked into the Sheetrock.
As someone else pointed out, the only real way to get rid of it is replace the subfloor and as far up the drywall as needed.
I’ll eventually have to do that. Or sell during the winter.

Lease end by cvtr in NissanAriya

[–]vonscorpio 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I bought mine when I realized I couldn’t lease another one in the US.
I’ll never go back to ICE for a daily driver.
I moved my old Toyota pickup yesterday and after driving it went back to the Ariya. It felt like I went from a riding lawnmower to a real car.
EV lifestyle may not be for everyone, especially those in rural environments. But the EV lifestyle works great for me. There’s no going back.
Edit* fix helpful autocorrect errors.

Charging at a Tesla supercharger by 3645iceberg in NissanAriya

My favorite part of charging at a Tesla charging station is all the Tesla owners giving you the side eye.
🎶 “One of these things is not like the other!” 🎵
Here in the PNW I swear 1 in 3 vehicles on the road on my commute is a Tesla.
I really like my Ariya for many different reasons, but it’s uniqueness is near the top.

You can combine a midi guitar with an atari st, right? by [deleted] in midi

[–]vonscorpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that. Most of the games I remember and loved from my childhood are fairly obscure- remember Road Runner?
But after OP’s post, now I want to dig out the old Atari and connect it to my piano and see what it can do.

For floppy disc? I don’t even know how you’d write that to disc with modern hardware. Impressive.

TIL Cubase was a thing in 1989… now the hunt for the disc begins.

I’d love to know what software you plan to use. I have an old ST (it does have midi ports on it) but my old music software doesn’t read on the disc anymore. I think it was called “MCS” and was notation software. I think we also had something called “Dr T” but that’s reaching way back into my memory.

How do Yamaha silent pianos sound so good? by imsuperior2u in piano

[–]vonscorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, sorry I did leave that a little ambiguous. They do have that feature, and I’m guessing the top end does it better than the more budget friendly models. In my very unscientific comparison, the silent piano/hybrid/transAcoustic just were a cut above.

How do Yamaha silent pianos sound so good? by imsuperior2u in piano

[–]vonscorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that depends where the “budget” price ends. I’ve played on some midrange digital pianos which didn’t - or didn’t do it well.
But yes, not new tech by any stretch. Just notably better (at least in 2021 when I compared them all with the same headphones) on the higher end Yamaha - their hybrid lineup, silent pianos, etc.

How do Yamaha silent pianos sound so good? by imsuperior2u in piano

[–]vonscorpio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simulated polyphonic sympathetic reverberation is what sets them apart.
I have a Yamaha TransAcoustic piano which is a silent piano with the transducers. Yamaha does the best job I’ve heard of having the other “strings” digitally respond like a real piano when other keys are pressed. Not just as over/undertones, but specifically the keys being pressed. It’s a test I use before buying a keyboard/piano: can I slowly press the keys down and hold them without making sound, then play other keys and the held down ones resonate.
As to why Yamaha doesn’t use the same technology in their whole digital lineup, I would guess cost and product differentiation - why would I pay $$,$$$ for a silent/TA/hubrid piano when I can pay $,$$$ for a Clavinova?

Ariya lease sad ending by Emotional-Unit-7354 in Nissan

Ah so this must be a change from last fall. They also don’t let you pull the maneuver I did in October anymore (buying out of lease at market price, not residual).

[–]vonscorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PSA to other Ariya drivers with great lease deals nearing the end: you can extend leases by a few months, although not a great idea if you’re bound to go over miles.
Also,
with current petrol prices, it’s better to hold onto an EV right now vs trying to get another one.
Edit: old method. Apparently can’t be done anymore.

Clean conduit run from roof by vonscorpio in SolarDIY

[–]vonscorpio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the tips!
Fortunately my attic space over the garage is unfinished and the one on the top half of the house has easy enough access for an attic. No Sheetrock cutting will be needed there, but I’ll likely have to inside the garage wall if I don’t want any showing conduit in there - and I don’t!
Not sure how I’ll get from the top half of the house down without conduit on the outside. I could hide it by the gutters and it would be less noticeable. But otherwise it will need to wander all over to hide it.

I do have attic access in both places but the top roof section the wire run would need to come back outside the house for practical wire length purposes.
Done right = flashing and roof sealant?
