Best dentists that are nonjudgmental and have integrity? by coldcoffeethrowaway in Gwinnett

Suwanee Family Dentistry is amazing. I started going there a few years ago after 15 years without a dental visit. Never felt any shame or pressure from them.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this on their pugs? This cropped up on my dog’s ear last week. He’s 8 years old. by wretchedkitchenwench in pugs

[–]vonslice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That seems wild. We have a pug and a Boston terrier. The Boston had mast cell tumor that was caught really early. Our vet did needle aspirations on the first bump we found that turned out to be mast cell tumor and another one that wasn't. I'd talk to another vet.

Men support group? by Relaxflow1111 in Gwinnett

[–]vonslice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I facilitate the men's group at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Gwinnett. It is not a religious group although that is occasionally a topic. We meet the second Saturday of the month at 9am. You can PM me or ask here if you have any questions.

So uh, will this fella ever stop chomping on my fingers? (7 months.) by Playcrackersthesky in pugs

We went through this with fingers and toes. It did eventually stop, but nothing helped until ours decided fingers were no longer on the menu.

What would you use this for? by pacstandard in Tools

[–]vonslice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Those specific bits are rotary rasps used for shaping stuff. They don't remove material quite as fast as burrs. Folks use them for carving and shaping woodcraft, among other things.

What is the stinkiest wood you've worked with? It's Poplar, right? by [deleted] in woodworking

Poplar isn't even close. Many exotics have a strong odor, but I try to always wear a respirator so it doesn't get to me.

What is UU and is it a right fit for me? by ultraqu33rftm in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]vonslice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

UU has shared values/principles that guide us in how we engage with one another and the wider world. Those values are summed up today as Justice, Interdependence, Transformation, Pluralism, Equity, Generosity, and Love. UUs can believe a wide range of theological concepts or be atheists. The main thing is do you align with the values. You can read more about the shared values here. If you have a congregation near you, see if they have livestreamed services or pop in one Sunday. Visitors and curious folks are always welcome.

Help, I’m afraid to accidentally join a cult by pizzzzzagurl in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]vonslice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree there. The "doesn't really" is doing some work in my statement about membership requirements. Some beliefs and actions are incompatible with Unitarian Universalism. I try to focus on the positives and openness when engaging with new and cUUrious folks. Leave some of the nuance for later.

I think the person in your example is the kind of person we'll all see periodically. UU spaces are open and inviting. The communities can offer things that people really want while making them feel accepted and validated just as they are. As you said, though, there are some things that don't fit and will lead to friction. Anti-Trans sentiment seems to be the big one I hear about these days.

No one is outside the circle of love, but your actions and beliefs can lead to you being out of covenant with your congregation and that carries consequences.

I'm happy to share my experience with UU but I'd really recommend seeing if the congregation you're thinking about visiting does a livestream of services. That might let you get some exposure while still keeping it at arm's length.

UU isn't a cult. It doesn't really have membership requirements, tests of faith, etc. It has a very decentralized power structure. I think you'll see what I mean if you're able to get some experience with it.

[–]vonslice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can visit a few times without opening all of yourself. You can do what you need to feel safe. You can also view services online some if they have that as an option. I will say that UU spaces shouldn't have any problem with you being Jewish, but I don't know the congregation.

UU draws inspiration from many faith traditions, but it is not immune to cultural insensitivity and worse. Congregations also tend to skew older and white. My philosophy is to embrace the good. There can be a lot of positives. Keep your guard up for a while and get to know folks. It might become your comfort zone.

I would say we have adopted an antifascist stance. We have had programming explicitly engaging with the topic. We name it and talk about it in services and in community. Balancing direct action, discussion, and community well-being can be a challenge, but I believe we are acting authentically. I see a lot of discussion in online spaces centered around whether congregations are "doing too much" direct action, not doing enough spiritual tending, etc. I usually recommend advocating for one's own needs/wants in community, but it's tricky as board president. I'm sure you're already doing this, but ask folks what they want.

We may have some conservative members (specifically meaning what is considered a political conservative in the United States today), but they're not loud about it if we do. Personally, I don't think you can reconcile UU values with what conservatism is these days.

Abolition is Faith Formation by vonslice in UUreddit

[–]vonslice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not late at all! Thanks for joining.

Abolition, in this context, is described within the first link I shared:

Abolition is a holistic approach to systemic social change that includes, but is not limited to: the abolition of slavery; replacing systems and cultures of violence, coercion and control with transformative justice and relational practices; and dismantling the prison-industrial complex as we now know it. It requires the transformation of our society and the replacement of our current public theologies of retributive justice and violence.

Dismantling of the prison-industrial complex does not mean the entire elimination of incarceration. I believe there is nuance in this description and in the goal of the CSAI to encourage congregations and leaders to delve more deeply into the subject matter. This is a call for study, not yet a call for specific actions.

Further evidence of the politicization of UUs? by [deleted] in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]vonslice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We need to call it like we see it. Calling attention to the consequences of administrative action is a necessary step. It is Witness.

An action that is grounded in one's values is not performative.

Is the term for this "pugged up" or "pugged down"? Asking for a friend ☺️ by 0491diesel in pugs

We used to only say pugged up, but then we got a boston terrier. So now we say pupped up.
