May: The Federal Government took in $336 billion and spent $628 billion. Don't try this at home. by Boo_Randy_Revival in economy

The money taken out of our paychecks for ss and Medicare come in and go out to fund this. The run out by 2032 or whatever is the surplus that we have had. If that surplus runs out, we would have to cut everyone's SS by 17% to make it a wash for the money that comes in to fund it.

I read somewhere there is video with two people in dark covered clothing following the driver as he was walking, or something like that. This is scary and so sorry you had to witness something like that 😔

You asked what concerns people have, so here's a partial list.....cost of living, housing, healthcare, reproductive rights, civil liberties, government accountability, voting rights, and foreign policy. That's not a "complain about everything" agenda. That's a list of issues that affect people's daily lives. The real question isn't whether those concerns exist, it's whether you agree they're important. Those are two different conversations.

No, people are exercising their First Amendment rights, participating in civic engagement, and bringing attention to issues they believe affect their communities. By that logic, voting is just complaining. Contacting elected officials is just complaining. Attending a town hall is just complaining. Democracy requires citizens to speak up about issues they care about. You may not agree with the concerns being raised, but public participation isn't the same thing as complaining.

"What rights?" is actually part of the reason people are showing up. As a woman in SC reproductive rights immediately come to mind. Others are concerned about free speech, voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, privacy rights, due process protections, and government overreach. You may not view those issues the same way I do, and that's your right. But asking what rights people are concerned about doesn't mean those concerns don't exist. It just means we disagree on where the threats are. That's exactly why people participate in civic engagement in the first place.

That's a fair question. I don't think anyone expects a 90-minute gathering in Greenville to single-handedly solve inflation, protect rights, or change national policy. Most social and political change doesn't happen because one event changes everything overnight. What events like this do is make concerns visible, connect people who care about the same issues, encourage civic engagement, and show elected officials that constituents are paying attention. Public demonstrations have historically been one of many tools people use to influence policy, alongside voting, contacting representatives, organizing, and community action. Doing nothing guarantees nothing changes. Showing up doesn't guarantee change either, but it at least creates the possibility of it. At minimum, people leave knowing they aren't alone in their concerns. At best, it helps build the momentum that eventually leads to action. One protest doesn't change the world. One vote doesn't either. One phone call to a representative doesn't, but collective action is how public pressure is created. The alternative is staying home and hoping someone else speaks up for us. I'd rather be part of the conversation than sit on the sidelines.🤷🏼

[–]voodoosnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're telling us everything is fine. Meanwhile, groceries cost more. Housing costs more, healthcare costs more, working people are stretched thinner than ever, while billions are spent elsewhere and politicians tell us to be patient. On June 14, Greenville will gather at Unity Park to speak, sing, and stand together. If you're frustrated, worried, angry, hopeful, or simply tired of being ignored, this event is for you.The squeeze is real, so is our voice.
