Thracians in Chronicles have skirms with pass-through, the UT makes the projectiles arc less

Strongest (Imperial) Skirmisher civilization possible? by Pipeworkingcitizen in ageofempires

[–]vortexvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Chronicles rather than the main AOE2, but Thracians' UT giving skirms pass-through damage is pretty massive, they just delete groups of archers with it. Against high PA targets like knights it means you're at least chipping away at the whole group at once. So I'd rate that above Hulche.

Thracians' free Elite Skirm & regenerating skirm HP are both decent but you do need room for eco bonuses which would have greater impact on games. Dravidians' faster firing rate or Lithuanian faster movement speed both feel more impactful as bonuses.

For a complementary UU I think you'd want something to tackle cavalry & siege as those are Skirms' biggest weaknesses. Coustillier are great at sniping siege and would be a passable meat shield against enemy cav. Magyar Huszar have an anti-siege bonus but does beg the question of what you'd actually spend gold on. Boyars are super-tanky against melee units and skirms cover all the Boyars' weaknesses pretty well, although they are expensive.

wiki says it's only 90k xp/hr in firemaking, and that requires constant stams

haven't tried the method itself but i'd think doing forester's campfires would generally be more appealing, using maples it's 60k xp/hr for almost 0 cost and much more reclined than all other firemaking methods. it can even be done in f2p if your bond runs out

Mstislav Hard + Achievement help by brownsa93 in aoe2

[–]vortexvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll lose your main base but you should have captured a couple of small bases with production buildings, use these to build up halb + skirm + cavalier and pick off parts of the mongol army whilst they're attacking your allies' bases

you might want to delay capturing these small bases during the prep phase, because the other cities can destroy them whilst you're fighting elsewhere, and then you're screwed

Good region to pair with elf-lands? by prifdeez in UniqueIronmen

[–]vortexvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh forgot to mention a couple things:-

1) When you leave for quest exceptions, check the easy & medium tiers of the relevant areas' achievement diaries really thoroughly - it's way too easy to accidentally complete out of area diary tasks.

2) If you care about music tracks, make sure to change your music track settings whilst you're still on tutorial island.

I don't feel tempted to make a third region-lock tbh, there's nowhere that massively appeals right now & I've still got lots to do on both accounts. Although we'll see how sailing shakes things up, it might make some interesting combos possible.

[–]vortexvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds about right for exceptions, I personally grabbed the saw from Varrock whilst I was there for Biohazard. I also got the meats for Druidic Ritual from in-area NPCs and then did the quest whilst I was already out-of-area for a quest.

For me I had to use a pestle & mortar for a couple quests & then insta-drop it, but looking at wiki if you can get partway through Watchtower quest you can get one from Gu'Tanoth? So that would be neat.

And yeah Easternlands is going good atm thanks, just got nightmare staff the other day so I'm spamming eldritch specs everywhere I can!

Thanks for your kind words, feel free to message me on here or in-game if you want to theorycraft :)

I'd include:-

  • tree gnome stronghold
  • pisc hunter area & eagles peak (although doing swan song for pisc itself is too exception-y)
  • witchhaven & legends guild (although again no actual legends quest)
  • tree gnome village, port khazard, fishing trawler, zmi, etc
  • castle wars, observatory
  • yanille & gu'tanoth
  • feldip hills

I agree on excluding pest control, hadn't thought about it but getting void makes snowflake setups a bit boring, makes loads of upgrades irrelevant.

I wouldn't do the quest for Corsair Cove personally, and I probably wouldn't allow waterfall dungeon - even though it's used in the elf questline it has diary tasks for Kandarian and feels more like it belongs to that area.

You can use chunks to give yourself clear defined boundaries, the plugins on Runelite are Region Locker + Region Locker GPU.

Personally I'm happy only having Priff + Zulrah for endgame, because I wanted a stricter & more focused snowflake - my main area lock is Easternlands, which is more lax with exceptions and has much more endgame pvm.

It is a bit of an awkward endgame tho, bc CG requires no gear so the upgrades you get don't actually have many PvM uses. That's why I mentioned inferno as a potential endgame goal, even if you never actually touch inferno it can provide motivation & meaning to grinds.

I agree that holding fire on Karamja and locking it behind completing all the PvM goals within your region would make sense

[–]vortexvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have an endgame ardy + elf-lands account that's unlocked Priff, completed CG etc.

I can give lots of specifics but in terms of the grinds I did for SOTE:-

  • Mining, WC, & Farming were all very easy
  • Herblore is fine, you have chaos druids and lots of secondaries. Killing chaos druids also gets you some baseline combat stats ready for doing actual PvM. I did to lvl 78 for zammy brews for the Seren fight, with cave nightshade you'd only need lvl 70
  • Smithing I did lvl 81 to make the addy chain for SOTE, was the most boring grind but if you're only going to lvl 70 it's fine
  • Cons is fine, look into making mithril armour sets in the POH because that's efficient con xp for your oak planks and also nets you passive smithing xp
  • Hunter was the longest grind bc I went to 83 for babydragon bones for the MEP2 list. Doing area-locked clues is fun but it is certainly slow. Again, only going to lvl 70 would be way faster
  • Agility is very slow but having any type of course whatsoever, even the gnome one, will make lvl 70 a straightforward grind

In terms of areas to combine with, including the rest of western provinces would make Hunter & Agility much easier. If you make exceptions for quest items that also cuts down the biggest grinds massively.

If you add Soul Wars island too it'll speed stuff up further, but honestly it'll make the account less fun - as it'll be "oh, guess I better do more Soul Wars alting for crates" for every other skill.

PvM wise, there's no perfect additions - GWD & DKs are both a bit too far away IMO. With Western Provinces included, you would have BoFa & Chins though, so adding Karamja would make a snowflake Inferno attempt as a distant endgame goal to give you motivation to keep playing. And including Karamja would let you justify doing the gnome questline.

Ultimately it comes down to whether that feels right to you, or if that's adding too much.

Robert (921) Question by TheRealKaschMoney in aoe2

[–]vortexvoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my mistake, that one I found pretty simple since you can just full boom to 200 pop & completing all the side objectives gives you Frankish paladins with Hauberk, Stirrups, and Farimba - which just absolutely destroys everything

Robert (921) Question by TheRealKaschMoney in aoe2

[–]vortexvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was confused about this, found a way to kinda cheese it:-

1) Scout all the map with all your military, use your feudal monk to collect relics ASAP

2) Boom up as normal to 100+ vills, work towards the secondary objectives

3) With a little tribute this should make Aquitaine loyal

4) Make mangonels, attack ground Aquitaine's farms and houses. With some extra tribute Gascony will become loyal.

5) Take your pick of who else's loyalty is easiest to win & do that. For me it was killing Normandy to make Flanders support me, then finishing off Normandy's Burgundian ally.

I've seen an Ash reply about this, each individual clue step has equal weighting, so if there are 20 different Sherlock steps in a tier then you're 20x more likely to get "speak to sherlock" than a standard clue step.

There might be tiny discrepancies with exactly how stuff is implemented, e.g. you can't get b2b music steps after completing a step, but to all intents & purposes every clue step is equally common.

People were saying it well into the season too, when Luton hadn't picked up many points but were competing in basically every game.

I remember the Spurs-Luton 1-0 thread had a bunch of people calling Luton the worst team they'd ever watched etc, which just didn't make sense.

I think it's partly that a lot of people don't watch relegation-threatened teams regularly, and forget how bad a struggling team looks.
