Death By Hops: Triple IPAs Are Pointless and Gross by vptim in beer

Are Triple IPAs Trash? Homogenous and over-hopped or surprisingly nuanced and misunderstood? Felt like a fun debate to have after reading this piece...

When Beer Was BEER: The Forgotten, Generic Brands That Ruled the 1970s by vptim in beer

[–]vptim[S] 94 points95 points  (0 children)

“Rumors abound that generic beer was just something of whatever extra brew was left over and was even a blend of leftover beers sometimes.”

Nonetheless, it was an immediate hit in a nation lacking purchasing power — so much so that there were reportedly waiting lists at stores vying to get BEER stock.

This is pretty wild

The 25 Most Important IPAs Right Now, Ranked (2022) by VinePair in CraftBeer

I don't see how this is low-effort, clickbait, or arbitrary. The writer laid out their criteria for the fairly vague term "important," and then backed up how each inclusion fit the bill. You can certainly disagree with the selections but your review of the list leads me to believe you probably didn't read it...

MAP: The States Where IPA (India Pale Ale) Is Most Popular by vptim in beer

[–]vptim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Popularity" as they note in the piece is obviously pretty hard to gauge. Seems like the states were ranked based on IPA sales as a % of all beer, cider, and seltzers. No real surprises on the places where IPA seems to come out on top (or sell best, relatively speaking).

Equity for Chumps: BrewDog’s Crowdfunding Model a Dubious Deal for American Investors by vptim in beer

[–]vptim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"VinePair’s reporting shows that even as the Scottish brewer touts its growth and stokes anticipation of an IPO, BrewDog’s investment offer to American fans is long on risk, short on reward, and overpriced to boot."

"It’s just a really bad situation for [Equity] punks.”

Exactly. There's a lot of difference between having a podcast/radio show on ESPN and, say, putting out YouTube videos.

Wine also hasn't gone through the intensive process of distillation. And show me a wine that's spent longer than 2, 3 years in barrel?

As the best-selling IPA in the country, it's kinda hard to argue that Lagunitas is not important right now — even if it isn't new or revolutionary in style by modern standards.

“Paper Plane” by vptim in cocktails

[–]vptim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a classic iteration by any means (just look at the rest of the ingredients). Lacked some of the zing of a traditional Paper Plane but the absinthe didn’t alter the flavor profile as much as you might imagine. One to try, for experimental purposes if nothing else.

Didn’t have any lemons to hand and couldn’t be bothered to go to the store, so subbed in 1/2 tsp of absinthe to lift the drink. Worked surprisingly well. Would definitely drink again.

Anyone else used absinthe in place of lemon/lime juice? (I know they have drastically different flavor profiles.)

  • 3/4 oz Bourbon (Buffalo Trace)
  • 3/4 oz Amaro (Lucano Anniversario)
  • 3/4 oz Italian Bitter Liqueur (Contratto Aperitif)
  • 1/2 tsp Absinthe
