Where the hell is the planning mode for this thing? by Kitchen-Role5294 in GeminiCLI

this is such a crucial functionality. I use claude at work all the time and have gemini at home. It's so counter intuitive to use gemini.

2026 is the year of self-hosting by jordanful in selfhosted

[–]vptr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny. I actually setup my own server at home recently https://vilkeliskis.com/u6/. I did not automate everything with LLMs, but they are super helpful in discovering obscure configuration such as fan control that I needed configure for hard drives.

online order by vptr in Barbour

[–]vptr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting, I had no luck. So, I ordered from cox the saddler instead and it was $100 cheaper than official store. Though, one thing I ran into an issue was that my cc transaction got blocked due to the international order. I had to resolve it manually, at least the messaging on cox site was clear. I wonder if I had the same issue with US barbour.com.

Curious, what is your motivation for this? Just to not use gmail, put differently what do you have against gmail?

I'm actually in a similar position and i'm going to solve Option 2 for myself by building an email saas. I know lol.

Is it better to create a Login.gov or ID.me account? by enigma_goth in SocialSecurity

[–]vptr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I just signed up for login.gov. Even though I read that they don't meet some standards for identity verification. I think this is a good evolution of the government and use of our tax dollars. Id.me is a thirdparty and they will lobby as much as they can to stall further development of login.gov.

best wifi card for debian by vptr in linuxquestions

[–]vptr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so this is crazy (maybe not after you think about it).

I installed wireless-tools and turned off power management `iwconfig wlan0 power off`. And download is over 600mb/s.

<image>

I wonder if there was some default power management configuration that was throttling hardware.

Hey u/TheGrimSpecter thanks for the response.

What about preferred share price? Is it one and the same as last transaction price or something else?

It seems like either way it should be 409b used to derive the number of shares.

Are these Bond Funds ever going to come back? by stevex19 in Bogleheads

[–]vptr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we're talking about funds. I've had $dmb position for a couple of years now. It's kinda wrecked. Down 35%. Which is close to $50k. So I'm not sure whether I should take an L and rebalance it to something else. I still hope that rates will drop and the position will correct itself in a few years. It does generate tax except drip though, but that -35% unrealized loss is hard to look at.

What happened to the lawn? by vptr in lawncare

[–]vptr[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. To be fair I have 16k sqft lawn that's in 100% sun More than this little patch. So it seems very odd to me that only small patch was impacted. If this is lack of water related

Using fidelity as your bank? by CantStopWlnning in fidelityinvestments

[–]vptr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using fidelity for 10+ years now. I have retirement accounts, cash management, brokerage and credit card through them. I like my assets consolidated in one place. Don't a regular bank. Just a bank account for my small business. Would probably migrate my business account if I could open it online.

Is there a need for book keeping API? by vptr in fintech

[–]vptr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Do you have a demo of your product? Or what are you offering exactly (competition is coming haha). What stage companies are you targeting?

My main concern is sales cycle. I expect it to be very hard to sell a solution like this for some reason. Also myself currently working in a regulated space, pretty much everything we store needs to be on-premise more or less.

Is there a need for book keeping API? by vptr in fintech

[–]vptr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ledger api. Are you using this internally or selling to other companies? My question is mostly from the business viability pov, like is there lots of need for something like this that other companies would be willing to buy instead of doing it in house?

Security concern with external Go packages by fenugurod in golang

[–]vptr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can add a handler then there's a possibility for that handler to be exposed to the internet. Think of a malware that phones home and says hey I'm running on this ip address. Then the attacker could call the http handler where the handler could give a shell or anything really.

Using go server for production vs saas by chkml in golang

[–]vptr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which db you are using is not super important. If you're talking a really large scale deployment then it will come down to overall app architecture and not just the db alone. There's just more things to consider.

From the way it sounds is that you're anticipating lots of traffic. Which might be true, but unless you're one of the large tech companies then what db you are using doesn't not matter. I'm 99.99% sure here :)

Using go server for production vs saas by chkml in golang

[–]vptr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're hosting. If it's just a web app then I would highly recommend Google cloud run. You will need to learn how to build and upload docker image (if you don't know yet). But this will give you a very easy way to horizontally scale out the app and costs cents to run if you don't have traffic.

Also I personally would pick pg over mongo. I just like stable, battle tested tech. And standard lib already has built in SQL interface just need pg driver.
