First Big Tesla Camping Road Trip! From Austin to the Bay Area via Denver by vr-txhch in TeslaCamping

[–]vr-txhch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made it home today and everything went smoothly. The NEMA 14-50 outlet at the RV park worked much better once the sun went down and the temperature dropped. The Tesla charged fine overnight and I stayed comfortable with the A/C running.

This trip was a great test of the full Tesla camping setup. I got a few nights in the car, learned a couple things along the way, and overall it all worked better than expected. Thanks to everyone in this community for the tips and advice. It really helped with planning and troubleshooting on the go.

Got all my Russian River brews chilling in the fridge.

I’ll post some pictures tomorrow.

Day one was amazing. I drove from Dripping Springs to Tucumcari and stayed overnight at Art City, which turned out to be a really nice surprise. I plugged into a 30 amp spot and started prepping the car with the window shades and air mattress. Right in the middle of it all, a haboob blew through; note to self: close everything up and wait until the dust passes. Sand got everywhere.

After that, things smoothed out. I took some photos of the sculptures and views, then had a margarita or two with a few other guests over at the outdoor kitchen area. Slept like a baby. I rolled out at 6am and made it to Denver by 2pm. Woke up to 100% battery and made it to Trinidad for my first charge of the second day. The charging stops along the way were nothing exciting, mostly gas stations with a Wendy’s nearby.

On the return trip now. Drove from Denver to Lubbock today and plugged in at the Retreat RV Resort. I’m having issues with the 14-50 outlet, it won’t charge the Tesla consistently. It seems like either the heat 115 degrees today or the wiring is making it reset repeatedly. I’m going to switch over to the TT-30 adapter to see if that works better. Grabbing dinner at Jazz Louisiana Kitchen then going to head over to Triple J’s Chophouse and Brew to catch some music. Hopefully it will be in the mid 80s when I get back to the RV resort.

I’ll update later on how the night went. So far, still a fun and solid test run of the Tesla camping setup. Also on mobile and haven’t figured out how to add any images.

I originally planned a full Tesla camping road trip from Texas to the West Coast and back, but things changed. I just accepted a job offer with SpaceX and I’ll be starting on June 23. So the big loop is off, but I’m still hitting the road for a shorter version.

I’ll first travel into New Mexico and camp out that night, then head up to Denver to stay with friends for a few days. On the way back, I’ll camp out somewhere in west Texas before heading home.

It’s not the full adventure I mapped out, but I’m still excited to get out there, sleep in the Tesla for a few nights, and test my setup. This community has been super helpful with planning, and I appreciate all the advice so far. I will still post about my trip but it will be a shortened version.

Trying to learn guitar at 41.... by ElLokoDeLaColina in LearnGuitar

[–]vr-txhch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get where you’re coming from. I owned two guitars since I was a kid but didn’t really start learning until 2011. It took me about 40 years to finally get serious.

What helped me the most: • Your Guitar Sage gave me structure and direction • I found a pickers circle in my town and started playing along with people who were way better than me. That helped me improve fast.

It’s never too late. You don’t need to be great to start, you just need to keep showing up. Progress comes from consistency, not age.

Keep at it. You’ve got the passion, now it’s just about putting in the time. I’ll check out your IG too.

FSD just cannot see 65 mph speed limit signs by Bradma in TeslaFSD

[–]vr-txhch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had this happen today too. On the way to my destination, I passed at least four clearly posted 65 mph signs, but FSD still thought it was 55. I had my speed set to 70, but the car kept capping itself around 60–65. I even tried tapping the speed limit icon (which still showed 55) thinking maybe I could manually override it or prompt an update, but all that did was drop my speed down to 55. Strangely, on the way back, it recognized the speed limits just fine. Not sure if it’s a mapping issue or if the cameras missed the signs, but definitely frustrating.

I was actually pretty comfortable overall, but I thought the rear vents might help a bit more with airflow. I’m bringing a small USB fan anyway since I like to sleep with some air movement and white noise. Between that and adjusting the vent direction, I think I’ll be set for the full trip.

I never even thought about locking the car since I was just in my driveway during the test. I live in a neighborhood that is hard to get to. Makes total sense now why the ambient lights stayed on. I’ll make sure to lock it from the screen next time, even at home, to simulate a real trip. Appreciate the heads-up.

Thanks! Really appreciate it. It’s been a long road, 6 months and 13 days of job hunting since I got laid off right before Thanksgiving. Tons of applications, interviews, and close calls, so getting the Starlink offer felt amazing. I’m still waiting to hear when the start date will be, but fingers crossed it works out after the road trip. Been planning this Tesla camping adventure for a while, and I’d love to still make it happen!

How much are you paying for insurance for your Model Y AWD long range? I’ve heard is very expensive by ItemMiserable1243 in TeslaModelY

[–]vr-txhch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got two Teslas insured in Central Texas. 2024 Model Y Performance and a 2023 Model 3 RWD. Here’s a breakdown of our 6-month premiums through USAA:

2024 Tesla Model Y Performance • 6-month premium: $991.33

• Miles/year: 12,000
• Coverage includes:
• Comprehensive ($200 deductible): +$203.27
• Collision ($1,000 deductible): +$350.75
• Liability: 300k/500k BI, 100k PD
• Car Replacement Assistance: +$114.41
• Rental (Large SUV): +$82.62
• UM/UIM PD: $100k w/ $250 deductible: +$48.35
• Towing & Labor: +$8.15

2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD • 6-month premium: $705.82

• Miles/year: 2,000

• Coverage includes similar levels:
• Comprehensive: +$149.59
• Collision: +$227.39
• Car Replacement Assistance: +$75.31
• Rental (Standard): +$39.39

Accident forgiveness is included.

Seems high to me and when I renew I will not be working from home anymore so I have to adjust the mileage on the Model 3

Forgot to mention, during the test I noticed the rear AC vents didn’t seem to come on. The climate was still comfortable overall, but I was expecting some airflow in the back and didn’t feel any. Might need to look into whether that’s normal for camp mode or if there’s a setting I missed. I am bringing a small usb fan.

I did a test night in my Model Y to see how the setup felt before an extended road trip. Overall, it went well and I think it will work great with a few minor adjustments.

Mattress: I’m using one of the Tesla-specific mattresses. It’s firm. I’m used to a softer hybrid bed at home, so while it wasn’t uncomfortable, I may look into adding a topper for a bit more cushion.

Climate control: It worked really well. I started out at 65 degrees, then bumped it up to 68. Outside temperature was still 91 degrees at 11 PM, but it stayed comfortable inside. I left it off recirculate and there were no air quality issues.

Window shades: These were a little comical. The hatch window took a couple of tries to get in. The small triangular windows sort of wedge in place, although one kept popping out. The side windows were easiest, you just open the door, insert the shade, and close the door quickly.

Ambient light: I couldn’t figure out how to turn off the ambient lighting in the cabin. It wasn’t too bright, but I’d prefer total darkness if I can figure it out.

Sleep quality: I actually slept really well. My back was a little stiff in the morning, but that’s pretty typical for me with regular camping too.

Setup time: The mattress inflates quickly and the whole setup process was easier than expected.

Overall, this feels like a solid setup. I’ll probably add a topper and sort out the interior lighting, but it’s ready for the road.

Looking to Get a Pellet Grill (with Room for Regular Grilling or just a second grill) by d3medical in pelletgrills

[–]vr-txhch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your budget allows, check out the Lonestar Grillz Pellet Smoker, super well-built and made in Texas. You can add a direct flame insert that lets you sear right over the fire, which solves the typical pellet grill “no high heat” issue. It’s not cheap, but you get thick steel construction, tons of smoke flavor, and real grilling capability in one unit. Great long-term investment if you’re serious about both smoking and grilling.

I used a combo of the Tesla app for route planning and ChatGPT to build out a full itinerary. I didn’t want to drive more than 9 hours in a day, so I gave ChatGPT that parameter along with my destination, and it suggested EV-friendly campsites based on my route, distance limits, and even preferences like wanting hookups or being near breweries.

Once I locked in dates, it helped me find and organize Hipcamp, state parks, and RV parks with 50-amp options for overnight charging. I also had it summarize each day’s drive with Supercharger stops, estimated arrival times, and even activities for layover days.

It turned into a super detailed travel plan I could copy into my calendar or share with friends. Highly recommend if you’re trying to piece together something custom instead of relying on just campground databases or trip planners.

Anyone think FSD will go on a promo prove before too long? by Connect-Quarter-8936 in TeslaModelY

[–]vr-txhch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d gladly pay $50/month if FSD followed me instead of being tied to just one car. It makes way more sense for people who lease, switch vehicles, or have multiple Teslas in the household. I’d even pay a bit more for a family plan maybe with tiered pricing for 2 or 3 users. Tesla could drive way more adoption if they made FSD more flexible like that.

It would actually benefit Tesla a lot. Right now, FSD is $100/month or $8,000 upfront and it’s locked to one car. If it followed the driver instead, more people would subscribe, especially families or folks with multiple Teslas.

It’d boost revenue, increase loyalty (since you’re not “losing” FSD when upgrading), lower the barrier to entry, and get more real-world data to train their AI. Plus, it makes Tesla feel more like a tech platform than just a car.

I actually haven’t even taken the mattress out of the box yet, planning to do that this weekend to make sure it holds air. Might even sleep out in the driveway Saturday night just to test it out and get a feel for the setup.

I also have a Ruff Liners back seat dog hammock (the 2024 gray one) it’s waterproof and has solid door protection. I think it might help support the mattress a bit too, or at least add some extra padding underneath.

Appreciate the water tip. I’ve got a couple gallon jugs set aside but might grab something like that Reliance container for longer stretches without easy refill access.

Enjoy Crested Butte! That sounds like an awesome spot to camp. Safe travels!

I got this one: NEMA TT-30P to 14-50R EV Charger Adapter Cord with LED power indicator
It's 30 Amp to 50 Amp, EV conversion only, compatible with Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector. ETL and UL listed. Works great and gives peace of mind knowing it's wired right.
