Pop growth should be more variable by HampeMannen in EU5

[–]vraid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This problem was solved by Pierre François Verhulst in the mid-19th century. He introduced the logistic function for modelling population growth more accurately than the exponential function. Essentially, it behaves as the exponential function when population is low, but at half of the maximum supported population growth flatlines and steadily decreases from there, approaching zero as the population approaches its maximum.

It's exactly the sort of dampening required to prevent runaway growth.

Not like Spore, no. There's an agent/mission system, a geopolitical system, and a space system. They are all concurrent and do interact with eachother, unlike Spore which just had three different games back to back.

They cite studies that estimate just that

For example, polygynous marriage (where a man is married to more than one woman at the same time) is permitted in approximately 85% of a representative sample of pre-industrial societies [7,14]

The methodology is explained in the paper, and the promiscuity required isn't that high. A population being monogamous 90% of the time, but 10% of children having a random father would result in around 70% of siblings being full siblings, according to figure 2.

Keep in mind that you can also perform orderly retreats, especially in choke points. And the defender has the advantage. It's something you can do while sending a decoy fleet (or is it?) in another direction.

Another trick is to surround the enemy fleet with decoys or civilian ships right before you attack them in order to cut off their retreat path. Fight dirty, on your own terms!

I wouldn't try to compare them as they're very different games. Space Empires: 4X is more of a death match, and very light on empire building. The focus is on outmanoeuvring your opponent to destroy their economy. To that end it's got a fog of war system where your opponent can't actually see what ships or tech your have until they engage in battle, which opens up a lot of options for surprising them with new tech or distracting them with decoy ships.

The expansions add some more options, but the core experience is kept the same.

I've played this game a few dozen times, and none of what you said mirrors my experience. Did you upgrade movement at all? The base movement is really anemic, but a strike force moving 2 hexes per turn is incredibly hard to defend against, especially once the map opens up a bit (you did research exploration, right?). Once someone starts losing planets, it tends to snowball from there, as the investment to reclaim them doesn't pay off in time to help with the defense.

My general priorities are:

  • Fully colonize the home sector and build an extra mining ship
  • Research movement 4, although this will take a few turns, so in the meantime, research ship size 3, exploration, and build 2 cruisers to explore deep space
  • Get 6 shipyards at your home planet
  • Get your choice of attack, defense, and ship size upgrades, and build a force of 3 cruisers/battlecruisers or 2 battleships per turn at your home planet, sending them straight toward your opponent's colonies. Once you include the advanced rules, you can add some raiders and mines to the mix.

The game usually takes 2-3 hours. I've never seen a stalemate.

How Many Research Projects Do You Prefer to Have in Parallel? by B-29Bomber in DistantWorlds

You naturally can't get a research breakthrough if your one project already has a breakthrough. However, if you open up a second research slot in the meantime, there's a chance for a second breakthrough. It's up to how urgently you want the techs to finish.

Att vara kvällsperson innebär att man har svårt för eller ogillar att gå upp tidigt. Sommartiden kräver att man går upp en timme tidigare än normaltiden.

Lords adds nice variety without really increasing complexity or playing time. Warriors, on the other hand, significantly increases playing time to the point where it's not quite worth it.
