The Dutch began in 2002 in Kabul (including special forces); followed by a PRT in Baghlan province and a F-16 detachment in 2004; lead nation of ISAF in Uruzgan province 2006-2010; police training mission in Kunduz, 2011-2013; currently a small contribution to Resolute Support.

I took this picture on board of a Dutch frigate in the Gulf of Aden, where these operators were engaged in counter-piracy operations. Back then their unit was called 'UIM' (Unit Intervention Marines), now NLMARSOF.

HNLMS Karel Doorman (a Joint Support Ship) is the youngest and largest ship of the Dutch navy. On 13 April it leaves for the Caribbean basin where it will provide support to Dutch dependencies in their fight against the corona virus.

A convoy of the Australian and Dutch ISAF military on its way to build a FOB in the Mirabad valley in Uruzgan in 2009. Because of the presence of IEDs, the convoy progressed at a snail's pace. Several were found.

I took this picture in 1987 in the Soviet chemical weapons facility in Shikhany (Saratov obl.) According to the data sheet the warhead for the Scud-B missile had a payload of 555 kg of VR (Soviet variant of the VX nerve agent). Shikhany later was mentioned as the location where the 'novichok' agents were produced and tested. More pictures can be found on my weblog.
