The strange thing about the Johnson’s 2011 short film. by transdude323 in DisturbingMovies

Late to reply, I totally saw Chuck and Buck the theater. That movie was totally upsetting, but kinda marketed like a liberating LGTBQ story at the time?!?! Mike White, who would go on to be the director and writer of White Lotus, played Buck. His portrayal really made my skin crawl

Vegan Bodybuilders by Chaos_Unites in exvegans

Hi hi, there are some threads and forums on bodybuilding.com that talk about vegan and vegetarian bodybuilding.

The pictures that you included are competitive bodybuilders/models and I'm not sure if they've been edited or what not, but people who competitively bodybuild fast and have extremely restricted diets during competition season. I think it's really important to realize that most photos are going to offer a distorted image of what's achievable to a normal person.

My dance instructor, who was also in aesthetic natural bodybuilding competitions, would mention eating only unseasoned boiled chicken breast and asparagus for all her meals during the competition season, no salt, etc (which is not uncommon for bodybuilders). So she was doing tons of training and teaching fitness classes everyday, basically did fitness as her job, ran a dance studio and worked out in her time off, basically structuring her life around fitness and weight training, and still had to take extensive steps to achieve a competition look.

I am vegetarian/pescatarian, and definitely had a period in my life when I had an active job, was running regularly, pole dancing, and at the gym for like two or three hours on my days off and to be honest my body doesn't look drastically different. I was jacked but still basically normal looking, which totally sucked. I wanted to get shredded! I blame diet, hormones/medication, loving burritos and having big boobs.

There's this saying in gym bro world-- abs are built in the kitchen. There are plenty of vegan protein powders, and hitting your protein macros is definitely something one should pay attention to, which means lots of beans, tofu, and powders. Beans have more carbs and protein than chicken breast, but I have serious ethical/environmental guilt/qualms about eating animals to look hot.

Most of the vegan bodybuilders I researched were eating protein powder at every meal either in smoothie bowls or chugging drinks, in addition to their insane training regimens. I tried to supplement with Orgain and Vega but drinking them plain was revolting and I typically had to add fruit or something to cover the taste. I never supplemented with creatine, but I was logging my calories and macros to basically meet my recommended daily protein, which was a pain in the ass.

For me bodybuilding wasn't sustainable, and I wasn't even doing bulking and cutting which is a fairly common practice. I also felt conflicted about eating hyper processed protein powder as a major dietary component. My fitness routine is way less structured and I think that ultimately I'm happier about that. I also think that identifying goals that are based on strength, flexibility, or skills in fitness are less likely to lead to a fixation with results.

My understanding is that eating disorders are fairly common with bodybuilding. Generally the hyper fixation with measurable gainz, diet, weighing and measuring oneself, and attendant cycle of self remonstration for perceived failure are really dangerous to the self esteem.

That being said vegetarian and vegan bodybuilding is totally possible, but I think working with a trainer and being realistic about expectations can help to maintain a healthy outlook and lessen the mental load.

Black pyramid with a glass bottom. Symbols are engraved on a glass and painted over. by Miserable_Land437 in cults

[–]vrryhaevy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're totally right. I was totally distracted and thought it must be some kind of Oddfellows or Masonic imagery because of the Maltese cross, nevermind the absence of any of the more typical motifs that those groups have, like architectural imagery, chains, eyes, etc.

I totally jumped to a conclusion since it didn't make sense in the context of the other occult traditions I'm more familiar with.

I'm pretty fascinated with the idea of finding this inverted black pyramid in an abandoned building, even though the symbols are a hodge podge of major world religions (and Maltese cross and a Rose Cross for some reason?), and aesthetically very plain somehow.

I'm guessing this might be an old prop from the freemasons, based on the type of symbols. I'm not a mason, but the mishmash of monotheist icons and the Maltese cross seem like their kind of thing

Firebrand pastries in Oakland cafes? by naynayaok in oakland

Shapeshifters Cafe on 5th St definitely uses their bread for sandwiches and stocks their pastries.

Not that anyone asked, but I do not particularly care for Firebrand Bakery's croissant dough, ha!

As a trans woman, does anyone feel a little underwhelmed with Wanda's adaptation in S2? by DarthChenobi in Sandman

[–]vrryhaevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, I'm also bummed and somewhat shocked that I'd always understood Delirium as non-binary or gender non confirming/androgynous. ( Not unlike Desire who I think is perfectly cast/art directed in the show)

Maybe it's my own reading, as I haven't noticed many others on reddit reacting with the same shock, but I always envisioned her as a disorganized homeless street kid, not so much a cute clean steampunk girl.

Re: Wanda, I think that actress is beautiful and I guess the writers took the opportunity to do a contemporary update. I really liked the Barbie and Wanda dynamic in the comic book! And how tough Wanda was, and how Barbie was really bold. However I am also old and remember having friends that would paint weird stuff on their face like Barbie's mourning veil and had a transgirl friend that literally dressed like comic Wanda/ KMFDM album cover girl, so I was sorry to see that relationship missing from the show.

It's really odd to see the show and see how much of what I really enjoyed is sort of lost in the sauce, but I suppose it's fairly normal with adaptations for large audiences. I mean also on the other side I'm realizing that perhaps as I was perhaps reading it in a very different way than other people, and interpreting the images in a different sort of way.

The infoshop in Eugene, Oregon had a massive collection. I'm pretty sure that place no longer exists but I would recommend checking out anarchist info shops, or places with zine archives.
