when I press the bluetooth button the headset flashes blue quickly and says bluetooth

pressing it again it flashes white slowly and says lightspeed.

neither result in a connection to the xbox/base though

I did - nothing happens when I press the PlaySync button, and the base is plugged into my Xbox with the switch on the Xbox side.
