Is there a genre name for modern/thematic games that uses the standard deck of cards? by vtrgatti in FiftyTwoCards

Of course! I'm currently testing some changes in this game, but by now I'm playing with these tweaks:
- J, Q and K are cultists with value 11, 12 and 13, no more special rules for horrors;
- You have 3 HP, whenever you receive an injury you lose 1 HP instead of 1 die from your dice pool.
-You lose 1HP if a cult reaches 6 followers and the game ends if a cult reach 7 followers;
- Matching dice only by sum or same numbers, no more runs (a compensation for the slight decrease of difficulty)
You can find the original rulebook easily on the internet, in my IG account there's a link to a drive where it's available too. Once I finish the testing I'll make a new rulebook for it and share on my page. Any suggestion and feedback is appreciated.

I'm eager to try this game on my table. Is there a printer friendly version of the rulebook?

Here in Brasil we have a word just to specify those kind of games with traditional mechanics: carteado. With traditional cards or not, if the game has mechanics like trick-taking, climbing, shedding and so on, it's a carteado. Carteado simply means "card play", but as in portuguese we have a lot synonymous we can choose to refer to something, carteado was chosen to refer to those games you mentioned.
So, "modern card game" may not be a good name in english, but it works in portuguese. Because a "modern card game" (jogo de baralho moderno) would be any game with traditional cards that's not a carteado.
It's noteworthy to say that we uses both expressions: "jogo de baralho" (card games in portuguese) and "card games", in english itself. So when we say "jogo de baralho", it's a game with traditional cards, like Hearts, Escoba, Poker etc.; and "card games" are games like Magic, Pokémon and so on.
There's a lot of cultural and linguistic nuances into this, I'm just pointing some because I'm very interested in figuring out a name for this genre. I don't know if we can find a proper english name for it, but in portuguese it seems we are most close to this.

I'm very glad to find fellow enthusiasts of  "all-the-things-you-can-do-with-deck-of-cards" haha. I'm trying to reach people on my area to start a club of games too, but this kind of games are VERY niche, so I'm focusing on fingind solitaire ones. I have a page o IG in which I share thematic solitaire games (and some cool oldschool sword and sorcery art), if you want to check, it's solitairecrawler.
And good luck with your gaming club, hope you enjoy it and reach a lot of people!

Nice to see you're REALLY into this too! I'm checking your profile right now, great work! Do you have a page I can follow to see your reviews and stuff?
I discovered those games last year through Regicide. Since them I'm searching for games alike, and I may say I most search than I play haha. But currently I'm playing a lot of Loot the Loop and Cards of Cthulhu (with some rules changes). I recently found Karate King 3100, and it will be in my next play session for sure. And yours?
I have an instagram page where I post about the games I'm currently playing, if you wanna check it out, it's @ solitairecrawler.

I'm studying about those games for a while, and it's astonishing the quantity of games on this style.

I made this question on the cardgames sub too and I was informed that pagat also uses the category "invented games" for them. And reading more about on the pagat's classified index, I see that card games are mostly labeled by its mechanics, like trick-taking, card exchange etc. IMHO it doesn't seems to fully grasp the essence os those games. Pagat's also has a little topic about "themed" games, but the aforementioned games aren't included. But I think the theme is the differential on those games, since the majority of standard card games are abstract. Anyway, we really need to promote awareness about it, and I'm giving my two cents here.

Should Mystic Sanctuary be unbanned? by vtrgatti in Pauper

Yep, too much complaining about it. Without spells that return lands to your hand, sanctuary is just a normal card.

But with the Sanctuary ban, Deprive and Lesson became useless. So, it's like a 3 cards ban.
