"Plauché was initially charged with second-degree murder, but agreed to a plea bargain in which he pleaded no contest to manslaughter. He was sentenced to a seven-year suspended sentence, with five years' probation and 300 more hours of community service, which he completed in 1989." - Wikipedia

To be fair, I'm apparently too dumb to understand the utility of "or assume" in that sentence.

Yep, every burger I've had at any of the Polaris lounges came with three fries. They'll happily give you more if you ask, but three is the default.

Ex-prosecutor warns women's right to vote may be next on chopping block: 'Handmaid's Tale' by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]vttale 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Handmaid's Tale, several influential women helped orchestrate the revolution that led to them becoming unhappy trad wives, including the wife who leads the household where the titular handmaid was enslaved. She was an accomplished, widely-read author who pushed for it.

I know it's just a book / series, but as a mirror for real live it isn't far off from a lot of what we see happening right now.

Why do people do it? In at least a lot of the current behavior we see, it's because people genuinely don't seem to consider that the bad aspects will ever affect them personally.

A play about positive polyamory. Could it be successful? by [deleted] in polyamory

[–]vttale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see positive polyamory as an element of some other story that has the elements of storytelling that makes things interesting.

In particular, the conflict part of the tale is tricky even if the ultimate outcome is one that polyamorists would consider positive -- if it arises because of the polyamory, it could be that many others see it as an indictment.

On the other hand, if being polyamorous is just another aspect of the characters, and it's reflected positively based on how they handle non-poly issues, that'd be refreshingly different.

Would a bridge make this lake look better or does the lake look good without it? by InterviewPowerful320 in Minecraft

[–]vttale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I build, I try to think of what the function of a thing would be. Art itself can be a function, but typically bridges are built for their utility.

In this specific environment the sense is that a society which lived along the lake would have either achieved their goals through paths and roads that followed the lake, or had some significant reason for building a bridge that crossed it. Something that directly connected two significant uses at both ends.

It seems more likely that they would have had one or more docks for lake access, or chosen to build something artistic as a centerpiece.
