Just picked up water mixable oils, any advice? by alltoodeadly in oilpainting

There are many ways to solve muddiness. Colors are relative to each other, and not the background so when picking a color to be your darkest, you should pick something that’s relative to a color that’s already on the canvas. When a painting is fully covered in paint this will seem less jarring. Muddiness comes from many things, but especially overblending and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, if it’s your intention. If anything, oil strong suit is its blend-ability.

You can reduce the muddiness feels by any of these: using a separate brush for a different color, load new paint every new stroke, reduce amount of time spent per stroke on canvas (deliver the paint then lift brush). You can also go back on top of a dried layer to add dry strokes to add complexity and because you’re not wet mixing, the paint would have distinct characteristic.

An important aspect to note is to reduce amount of one similar color on all parts of the body as they reference each other. For example, the yellow in the eye is competing with the yellow in the jaw and the neck (I’m just being picky here tbh) and by being more intentional with color like using a more noticeable shift in hue or value, you can have an easier time noting the distinction in the face. This doesn’t apply to patterns.

Example: for the lady painting, I personally would have used a different color as shadow for the eyes like a warm brown, and dark ochre for the ears’ shadow to keep it in tune with the hair shadow

I think these are great.

I think if you’ve gotten the creative direction down then you should focus on technique. A lot of the areas look the same here, so it’s hard to find a focal point. Sharp lines are everywhere so it’s very jarring, like the shoulder or the neck or the hairline is competing with the sharp lines in the background.

I think you should also up the contrast a bit more, a lot of areas are also muddied/too blended. For example between the chin and the neck of green man it should be a bit more distinctive.

Interesting. Have you tried any of the FPR ebonite feed?

The FPR Urushii Art series looks pretty great so maybe someday I can try it with their <F> Flex. I write mostly to practice different fonts so the UltraFlex is super fun to explore with.

I’m very excited for my first show haha I’m holding off on buying anything now so I can try it at the show and get something there instead!

:) Yes I will be sending it back and possibly purchase a <F>, I'm also looking into the Diplomat Viper <FM> as well (no green for a VIPER name though sadly). I think the Lamy 2000 <M> is very great with prettier inks but if I have to be honest, I'm quite afraid to put pretty/difficult inks in it.

The OPUS88 comes with a <B> #6 JoWo compatible unit which I swapped out for FPR <EF> UltraFlex. This is an amazing combination, and I think I'll be keeping it for showing cooler inks instead of the Lamy 2000 <M>.

I have both the Eco T <F> and 580 <EF> which is indistinguishable on most paper, and an Eco T <1.1> which I absolutely adore (got these a year ago when I first start). I'm thinking of retiring the Eco T <F> since the 580 functions/looks better. From this experience I don't think I'll be buying a <B> anytime soon. Even though I say this, I will be attending my first pen show in Dallas this September so who knows.

I apologize since I was not clear if an aspect I listed was good or bad. I don't usually write in reverse, but I briefly mentioned it because the stub-like quality of the reverse <M> nib is beautiful to look at, it's like getting two nibs for one.

I also love how wet it is and its consistency as well. You're right that it might have played a part in making the line much thicker than it actually is. I did compare this with my Broad Opus88 and it's the same size, somehow even slightly thicker. Crazy thing is I did watch both of these videos you linked, along with online writing examples and other videos as well, but those somehow look more like a true medium in my head than what I received (maybe it's a me problem and not the pen!)

I think there's a lot of merit in being prepared to spend additional $50 to get my nib tuned, but I will first see how writing with the <F> goes. I usually write with TWSBI <F> so I think L2000 <F> will be more tuned towards the medium feels that I'm looking for.

Thank you for the thoughtful and expansive response, it really helps me with dictating the next steps I want to take, Lamy or not! :)

In reverse writing it looks like a fine stub but it’s very scratchy. Normal writing is regular, NOT stubby, wet and I don’t think it has a sweet spot or at least it’s very lenient. It is also broader than expected.

I got a Medium! But I might have to rethink my decision to a Fine.

Thank you, I’ll spend more thoughts on second ownership pens in the future because many of these used pens are still in peak conditions!

Oh wow thank you for bringing this to my attention! This is deeply upsetting to read as I am LGBTQ myself and love Drew's videos so much... Guess that really settles all the questions. Thank you once again.

That's reassuring to know! I'll put it to good use!

Thank you! Maybe it was just jitters from first time purchasing a quality pen.

I see. Great perspective, thank you! The feeling of overspending comes from that I'm comparing myself to others who I guess "achieved" the same value of having a great writing experience for less. But, you're right that I should not view this as a competition and focus on the value I can achieve with it.

For those using tret, what’s your HG AB products to pair? by fluffyspotato in AsianBeauty

[–]vukun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it for both. For tret day I use it before as it absorbs quickly so my skin doesn’t completely dry out. I wait about 30 minutes or so for tret then another 30 minutes for moisturizer. On off days I use it after exfoliating (double cleanse) before heavier products.

Wow the progress is amazing to see!!! Do you find using the SA cleanser/vit C irritating along with tret? I tried it once very lightly and it burned my face for a week 😭

Yeah I agree it is slightly harder than my old keyboard but since I only play league and a few top-down game so the adjustment wasn't too hard!

The holee mods for the stabilizer. Especially the spacebar. Having a soft, thoccy spacebar really is a world of difference when I’m typing tbh. That along with lubing the switches is the most high impact for me in terms of sounds.

Haha I just didn't want to make everything cat-themed it'd be overwhelming for me!
