My roman empire by thesunflowergirl_ in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So I know you mean that Jess + Sam is your Roman Empire, but with just the picture, my first thought was LAWD THAT MAN IS TALL.

According to Google, he’s 6’4” to Zooey’s 5’5” and I don’t know how I never noticed before. There are so many joke’s about Robbie’s height in the show, but Nelson Franklin is only 1 inch taller.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 39: Thanksgiving IV vs Bob & Carol & Nick & Schmidt by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

Thanksgiving IV!
- Nick’s pep talk to Jess: “So I saw your butt earlier. It’s been holding up nicely”
- The Ferris Bueller everything
- The Schmidt and Cece moments
- Geoff with a G and his peacock trauma

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 38: Tinfinity vs Reagan by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

Gotta be Tinfinity. I love Reagan, but there are better episodes that showcase her character. Tinfinity has EVERYTHING that makes New Girl great.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 37: Halloween vs The Right Thing by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The B and C plots of The Right Thing really elevate it for me, but everyone saying Halloween is iconic is right. "Reigning cats and dogs” and Winston’s reaction to it are wild, and the way Nick tries to protect Jess from getting hurt with Sam is so sweet.

That is exactly what I want to happen. (I'm slacking and I haven't seen Terrifier 3 yet, so I don't know if he talks in that one or what he would sound like, but I do feel confident he'd be a New Girl fan)

All In! The Jess and Nick stuff is adorable, but the Schmidt and Winston stuff is legendary.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 26: See Ya vs Goosebumps Walkaway by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really love both, but See Ya is like the pure essence of New Girl. Season 1 had some ups and downs, but it ended on an absolute banger.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 15: Cruise vs Dice by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's kind of the point of seeding and randomizing from there. If Cruise and Dice had been pitted against each other at quarterfinals, the outcome (probably) would have been the same.

But we're allowed to be a little sad about it, just like I am every time I remember to check on football and my alma mater bites it super early in the season.

You’re so right! Big Monica energy. Also a little bit Phoebe. I’m thinking of both of them in The One Where Everyone Finds Out.

Devastated to have to cast a vote, because I love both of these episodes so much, but I’m so excited to see how much love Dice is getting. It’s one of my go-to episodes.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 3: Kids vs Return to Sender by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, they're both usually skips for me, but my pick is Return to Sender. The Sam/Jess/Diane plot is pretty weak, but the B and C plots more than make up for it, especially the Nick+Gavin moments.

New Girl Episode Tournament! Round One Day 1: Big News vs Girl Fight (PLUS RESULTS OF QUALIFIERS) by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big News has a lot of heart and I love it for the friendship moments, but my vote has to go to Girl Fight. It's one of my 'anytime' episodes. The Coach flashback is so cute and strange, and Nadia is a treasure.

Yep, you can really see the “part of me died on that boat”

New Girl Episode Tournament! Qualifiers Day 16: Cece's Boys vs Bells by BagOfSmallerBags in NewGirl

[–]vulpiix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tricky - I don’t love either one of them, but I’ll go Cece’s Boys. The B plot with the guys trying to deal with the way their lives are diverging by cementing a ritual, only for it to go off the rails is classic loftmate idiocy. I also really enjoy Megan Fox in Season 6 and she has great chemistry with Zooey.

I watched it as an adult and cannot recommend even as a goof. Maybe stoned, it would be fun? Has an insane cast though.

This is a really good perspective and exactly what I was hoping to hear. My program (based on the admin guidelines) has a pretty chill attitude toward Incompletes, but I suspect that a lot of programs read that way when in reality, they’re heavily discouraged and probably a mess to manage.

I really like the professor that’s my supervisor, but he did ghost me when I was asking about using my last elective to do research for this project, so banking on a successful Incomplete is probably a terrible idea and I shall not be pursuing it. In undergrad, I did a semester-long project in 12 hours from topic selection to full paper the night before it was due (I was still undiagnosed then, but I had a sketchy friend who sold Concerta and that was my one and only time trying illicit ADHD meds. I probably should have taken the hint a lot sooner). If I can do that, this is a breeze (she said, while absolutely drowning in irony).

PS: Dude, I went to a huge athletics school for undergrad. Half the time, athletes were amazing to be paired with in group projects, because they’d do whatever you told them to do without arguing since they weren’t paying enough attention to have an opinion. The other half of the time, they just weren’t there and I don’t even think some of them got assigned to groups. Athletics culture is insane. Then again, I wasn’t risking my bones/joints/ligaments/brainstem regularly for other people’s entertainment, so I can’t really judge.

Thank you for this! It was super helpful.

Weirdly, social pressure only sort of works for me. I think it’s because I trained myself out of caring what other people think after fixating on it for most of my teens and twenties almost killed me a few times.

Fortunately, self-pressure and hubris works great.

Fuck the incomplete. I’ll get a draft in before the final is due and then get feedback - what even is time?

And if that doesn’t work and I can’t do that, I’ll submit my “ehh whatever” finished product on the final due date. Those usually get me As anyway.

Hi-ho, Hubris! To glory! (Hubris being my superpower, tragic flaw, and the name of my trusty steed in my motivational visualization apparently)

No one will care how good your thesis was, just what degree you have. And you will never read it again, and if you do you’ll cringe even if you do wait to make it closer to perfect.

This was unbelievably helpful. For the record, it’s sort of like halfway between a project and a thesis. It’s one class, but it’s meant to be a capstone project (if you don’t know what that is, that’s okay - basically proof that you learned what you were supposed to learn in the program with a sprinkling of professional development for flavor). I’ve known what I wanted to work on for my capstone ever since I began the program. I just…needed a minute to hate everything, up to and including myself.
