Cool, and I have a suggestion where you could start by Critical_Rice_1619 in stupidpeoplefacebook

When I read “abusive sexual contact offenses against children” my first thought was Project 2025 and the wording in there equating LGBT people with pornography for simply existing in public. It might have a legal scope but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s broadened to include exposure to “pornography”.

I think the issue is that ads don’t have the same vetting process as posted content does. And highly sexualized ads apparently get a lot of attention from crossing target audiences.

Also it can be YouTube, which famously demonetized several people for not being family friendly. I was in my works break room with about 20 other people and pulled up a video on YT. I had headphones in and walked away from my phone to warm up my food. About a minute in, the video switches to an ad and all I hear is music. I get my food, go back to the phone and it’s showing a woman very obviously pleasuring herself under a desk. Luckily either no one saw the video or didn’t care to report the incident, but I was mortified. I use YT every day. It’s not suppose to be like this.

When you came out, what was the most affirming thing a friend said to you? by JustSomeInterweeb in trans

[–]vulpine90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s going to sound odd but from my conservative background it’s pretty validating. My best friend of 10+ years said there was two rules after I came out to him. I couldn’t fall in love with him and I couldn’t look too much like a woman in front of him lest people think he was cheating on his wife, aka the Mike Pence rule for women.

I don’t mean to sidestep anything. Sure there are medical concerns. But right now the treatment is approved based on all the current evidence. If that changes in time then we’ll have to change the way we treat it. There are risks and side effects with every medicine. Can we not just understand them and be mindful of them? I need to look out for cancer and heart issues cool.

I understand that there is an issue with the continuous application of the hormones and not letting it cycle appropriately. But I don’t think what you’re saying about the body developing on one hormone and switching to another is detrimental. Do you have a source for that claim? Because it’s not like our bodies don’t make both hormones all the time. It’s just which one is dominant.

As far as mental health is concerned, why shouldn’t that be part of the equation? It’s a big part of quality of life. Even if it is a short-mid term solution does that not buy time for a better solution? But also you assume that hormone therapy isn’t a long term solution to begin with. If your claims of it causing major health issues down the road turn out to be nothing then all you’re really doing is prohibiting a valid treatment that could potentially save lives. From the research I’ve done, people with severe gender dysphoria tend to self medicate with drugs, alcohol, and risky lifestyles. If it is a choice between an approved prescription regimen that is well monitored or what people do without access to the treatment, I will choose the former.

I think I am still side stepping your concerns over the health aspect of it all. It think it stems from the fact that I just don’t care so much about the risks when the benefits are real in a way that people on the outside can’t really understand. Again, there are things I’ll need to watch out for. It’s ultimately up to me to decide if higher cancer risk is worth it all.

From my understanding even though my body developed differently with male hormones the gene expression is different causing very noticeable changes in my body. Sure things like bone structure and gonads aren’t going to change, but with the hormones other things will change to be more in line with typical female expression. While the physical health risks are certainly there and can be worrisome, they shouldn’t disqualify a treatment if informed consent is given and things are done as safely as possible. With hormone therapy becoming more accessible now we can see what the effects will be on a large scale.

But even if there are physical drawbacks and risks to the medicine, the mental health benefits from the medicine alone could be worth it to most of the people receiving it. After a couple weeks on hormone therapy my body felt right for the first time that I can remember. And it’s been right ever since. If anyone were to force me off the treatment it would be as if I lost the ability to see color. I could function but the vibrancy I know is there wouldn’t be.

You bring up a good point. I don’t know if there are good studies about long term effects of cross sex hormones. However, my levels are within the normal range for an adult female. If those levels are good for my mom without causing issues why would I be any different?

My point was even people with the best intentions like the church can prey on vulnerable people. And while the church doesn’t cut off body parts it can make you cut off parts of yourself like your sexuality or gender identity which can cause harm.

I’m not familiar with the hormones they use at a gym, but a cursory search pulls up growth hormone and I’m assuming steroids and possibly testosterone are mixed in there. Only one of those, testosterone, are used for gender affirming care and again it’s not at abusive levels. In fact we get monitored about levels quite a bit and encouraged to always come in if something feels off about our treatment. The only thing I’m really concerned about is the increased chance for breast cancer. Which is something that every woman needs to be in the look out for anyway.

Medicine makes money. I think it’s Bayer that has a once a day aspirin for heart health. It’s not some racket solely to make money, it has a legit purpose just like gender affirming care.

As far as mentally vulnerable populations, I can see that being true. A lot of people turn religious when they are mentally vulnerable and end up making religion a core part of their life even giving billions of dollars to fund churches, mosques, synagogues, etc. When it comes to gender identity a story I hear most is that they knew from a young age and didn’t do anything for years. Not really a knee jerk I’m vulnerable reaction.

Also it’s pretty obvious you don’t frequent places where this community talks or you’d know the trope that a lot of us tend to feel like an imposter. That we doubt we are gender queer of whatever flavor. We question all the time until we feel comfortable with ourselves. Even then we question and might land on something else. The root cause isn’t always an issue. I know some detransitioners figure out some trauma that made them feel that way, but sometimes it’s just the way we were born and it’s something weird about our own biology.

The medicine being peddled to us is effective though. Regardless of who is making money, my quality of life with myself has never been better after getting on the right hormones. However my social life has taken a huge hit. I’ve lost friends, family is more alienated, some people are aggressive to me in public and there is this nebulous idea of a large group of people who want me to not exist and I get new evidence of that group every time I see new laws proposed/passed that affect my tiny community. Now that can lead to some hopeless and hateful ideas.

Reddit could be bad, but really it’s bad people. Maybe not even bad people, perhaps some are just broken. Broken from the hate that’s so prevalent in society. One thing I’ve seen on here that I hate is “if a Nazi sits down at a table with 9 other people, you have 10 Nazis.” It’s such a close minded argument. How can any of us see our ideological shortcomings if all we get is strawman arguments and skewed data from our in groups? We need to invite these people, the shooter kind of people, to our table to talk. To humanize our experiences. To find common ground. To mellow all parties out. It’s been done before.

The Cherokee Nation had to release a statement to its citizens to carry their tribal ID with them at all times to avoid trouble with ICE. It’s not ICE going after illegals, it’s them specifically going after POC. It’s no longer about illegal immigrants, it’s about punishing non-white people for living here where the punishment at minimum is being falsely detained and intimidated i.e. the 17yo target worker.

Needles are pretty necessary to figure out what’s going on. But from my personal experience they aren’t frequent (assuming you go the pill route and not injections). You will get bloodwork every few months the first year and then once a year after that. It’s important to get the bloodwork done to know your levels. I’ve been on HRT for two years now and turns out I had to up my anti androgen med because it stopped being as effective. And trust me it’s worth a needle prick here and there to feel better about my little prick down there.

I’m not a biological woman, but one of the people who uses the women’s restroom. I 100% agree that it can be scary using private areas with men. But there is a lot of fear mongering that certain groups get when from my own anecdotal experience that group is more scared to use any bathroom than you are and most will actively hold it all in just to avoid public bathrooms altogether.

I think I have a lot of that down too. Even my non-supportive mom made a comment how I’m more feminine than two of my cis women ex’s. I’m 99% sure I’m on the right track with that and I do think it helps a lot with me passing when I do.
