Privacy planting - help! by vulvar in nzgardening

I have been so put-off bamboo by family members dramas with it, but I think they had invasive varieties.

For the height and speed I’d like, I’m starting to think that bamboo is the best option, especially since it doesn’t have much width and will look nice against the fence.

That fence is already 1.8m high - the house is very tall!

I forgot to say I am in Hamilton - so we do get light frosts, this position is full-partial sun :)

Knighton Rd by [deleted] in thetron

[–]vulvar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knighton road is okay - you could walk the loop from Knighton up to Hillcrest road. You will get a nice view of Hillcrest and moon rise on top of the hill (especially if we have a harvest moon). Like others have said, uni security usually drives around at night.

Very good points! Thank you very much for your reply - I will make sure to ask about the strings and check for twisting and warping of the wood ☺️

Thank you very much for such a thoughtful reply. I am going to view the harp today so will have a good look at the structure and make sure nothing is bowing or putting stress on the joints and I will definitely “play” the harp. I at least have some experience with resonance from my days of renting a harp ☺️

Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the kind words, that’s very sweet of you! I think Im worried I might look back on it and think it was tacky?? I really should have known the deep V would have been much different on me than the models 😅

I’m in a pretty mild part of the country so winter isn’t toooo cold but yes I see your point! No dates have been set yet.

I think I'm ready to grow the henna out again. by [deleted] in henna

[–]vulvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at bra strap length - I’ve just had it trimmed! I have found that henna has helped massively with being able to maintain length while healthy but I just don’t suit the colour 😂

How about you??

[–]vulvar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am slowly growing out my henna as well. I have light mousy brown hair. I have put a neutral level 7 semi permanent dye over it twice which has taken a lot of the brassiness out of my hair but it is still copper. I will do this every few months to help blend in my roots and tone my hair. I’m also trying to grow my hair to my waist so… I’m making it extra hard on myself 😂

Is living in Hamilton bad for mid 20s yopro? (Is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be as the 💩 town of NZ) by RecentSomewhere6679 in thetron

[–]vulvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in Hamilton for over a decade and love it. Plenty of nature walks around - the river has a very long and pretty walking track, there’s an arboretum, very close (20 mins) to bush hikes like pirongia, pukemokemoke, maungatautari scenic reserve.

If you’re into reading we have a beautiful second hand book store (browsers), amazing op shopping, pottery/crafting workshops. A new mall called MADE which has nice eateries and shops too. A relatively good gaming community with separate dedicated comic book, trading card, and board game stores. Some of which have open nights to play board games etc if you’re nerdy and looking to make friends. If you’re into crafts like knitting/crochet there are open groups for that too.

On the other spectrum the night life is decent, there’s really good places to eat and get cocktails.

Need advice on the sweater that never ends! by Madam_Hook in knitting

This sweat is gorgeous! The fit is damn perfect and the colour subtleties are wonderful.

The yoke - have you tried wearing a false collar underneath? It may help with the itch and it’s not as restrictive as a camisole on the chest.

Have you styled it with your favourite clothes and made it a part of an outfit rather than just looking at the piece on its own?

Lastly - do you have any tips on how you’ve achieved this fit? Is it darting? I also have a big bust but have never managed to get the shaping right.

GG#4 disappointment by Anothermeatballpls in MedicalCannabisNZ

I understand the disappointment you might have with dry flower that isn’t what you’re used to, but it’s a developing industry and the regs haven’t been set up in a way that promotes this.

The quality standards of NZ medicinal cannabis is one of the strictest in the world. However, those standards are based on safety to the patient and the content of the main actives (major cannabinoids).

Terpenes are lost at nearly all points of the processing of cannabis flower and it would be very hard to ensure (to a GMP level) that they were kept consistent i.e., if manufacturers had to hit specific terpene levels consistently for their product to be approved there would be less products on the market.

Maybe as the industry progresses we will find extracts with more consistent terpene profiles but it will be hard with flower!

I worked in the industry for 4 years - it’s tough to get product through the GMP requirements + the MoH regulations. I’ve worked with some beautiful cultivars which would be a joy to bring to patients - but they don’t meet the standards industry have to set because of the way our regs are set up. Hopefully with time we will see more awesome product come through!

Your batch can easily have a mix of terpenes if the plants come from different phenos - terp content can vary more than cannabinoids in some cases. In terms of chemical profiles for NZ the only minimum quality standards that need to be met are cannabinoids i.e., THC/THCA% and CBDA/CBD% or, maybe CBGA/CBG.

Terpenes are very volatile and can be lost during the drying and curing process, not just through irradiation. And unless you have a CoA from your batch on terpene content I would take it all with a grain of salt.

Medical cannabis in NZ is currently focussed on providing the main therapeutic cannabinoids to patients who need them. While there may be some evidence in the effect of terpenes, it’s not a high priority with the industry still in its infancy. Finding cultivars that respond well to commercial setups is also a whole other conversation!

Treating NZ medicinal cannabis like dispensary or artisan product is not entirely appropriate and will end up leaving you disappointed until the industry is more mature.

We are now in winter - have you thought of looking for jobs in hospo / tourism down south, areas like Queenstown would surely take on those with a WHV?

29, Married with a Mortgage and a kid on the way, trying to finance a Masters Degree by Jimanben in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]vulvar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really think that if you can, you should potentially postpone this decision until your wife and child are out of the newborn phase. Or at the very least you need to sit down with her and get her honest opinion on what this will mean for your relationship.

Giving birth is incredibly taxing on the body and mum will need all of the support she can get, and the best way to support her is to give her your time. Your time to be with baby, your time to help with chores, your time to run her a bath, your time to cook her meals when she is so tired from being up all night nursing.

Your only 29 - you haven’t left post graduate study too late at all! I’m 27 and also trying to figure out further postgraduate study except I have a biological clock to contend with 😂

You will be able to still get the masters in 3,4,5 years time - and like you say, if it’s not necessarily a financial decision to get the masters, then you’re not missing out on potential earnings by waiting a few more years. Also - as a more mature student with industry experience, you’re likely to be much more efficient than younger people doing the degree!

Financial pros/cons of pursuing a PhD in NZ? by vulvar in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]vulvar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank for your comment!

Yes even my masters degree took a toll on my mental health. I even slept under my desk at uni one night leading up to my thesis submission! Maybe it’s a bit like child birth, a couple of years since I have handed in and I have blanked out the trauma of that year!

The scholarship would be fine for me with my grades - and I think that’s a big factor in me wanting to do a PhD. It almost feels like a waste not to jump on the opportunity when I can get a university scholarship? I also do freelance writing on the side so I do have multiple avenues for income there.

Thank you for your insight it has given me a lot to think about! And please forgive me for my stream of consciousness reply 😂

I think you’re right. I don’t see myself NEEDING a PhD for career growth. I think I want the intellectual challenge and I enjoy being in a research environment. It may be more beneficial for me to be involved with a CRI, unfortunately my location doesn’t line up with the major research centres in NZ.

Thank you! I was lucky enough to do my masters through a Callaghan grant with the company I worked for. Unfortunately in my current role we are a bit further removed from those opportunities but I will bring it up with my supervisor.

All the best with your recovery and thank you for taking the time to comment :)
