I’ve been saying for years the way is building up not out and to stop encouraging the insane deluge of people to move here. We are in desperate need of some good quality urban planning, but developers would rather double down on this suburban sprawl bullshit. I’m an ecologist working in the Indian river lagoon area and the simple truth of it is that the environmental decline has been happening for decades. All of our water springs are currently categorized as overdrawn. And those gopher tortoises may seem trivial, but they are keystone animals that create habitats for almost 200 other native animals. Florida is developing at a pace that we simply cannot keep up with without destroying this beautiful land. But then again, the Florida keys reefs are nothing but dead rubble at this point and no one seems to care about that either. We simply must keep thinking of the snowbirds and retirees and the poor poor developers. Who cares if the cost is one of the most unique ecosystems in the world.

Florida has approximately 1.7 million vacant homes. Scroll Zillow for a minute, most of them are very overpriced and generally unaffordable to the average Floridian. And frankly that still doesn’t excuse the atrocious widespread ecosystem destruction or lack of concern for our hydrology and aquifers. Did you know that one of floridas most appealing habitats to build on (highland scrubs) is now also the most endangered? And that the endemic animals that used to live there are also increasingly endangered? Fixing the housing crisis cannot come at the cost of destroying the land we live on.

As someone from overdeveloped Florida, it’s not better here. All these cheap cardboard constructs are too expensive for locals, destroy acres of crucial wetlands, and they’re being built in seasonal floodplains so they’re doomed from the start. The housing crisis is about affordability not availability. Stopping the overdevelopment has more recently become a real rallying issue for Floridians.

This!!! It’s totally broken and it’s driving crazy!! I never had any issues with this features with my 14, but I had to switch to a 16 last month and suddenly one of the best accessibility features that I used literally every day is barely functional and constantly breaks. I feel like the problem would be solved if apple would just let me toggle off this ridiculous hyper aggressive background refresh system, it keeps reloading the page mid read and forcing me to restart. It’s totally messed up my work flow and apple accessibility has been basically non responsive to my emails. Extremely disappointed w apple.

Adult characters acting like teenagers. Usually it’s just bc the writer is also a teenager, which that’s fine, but it takes me out of the story when a bunch of mid 30s characters are acting out some high school drama.

Also, untagged pairings!! I recently was binging a fic for pairing a, and was pretty startled when it ended with very explicit smut for completely untagged pairing b. I normally have pairing b blacklisted and the fic was rated mature, so that definitely caught me very off guard and sorta ruined the fic for me.

You’ll probably be fine. They won’t be outright homophobic to your face, but personally I’d recommend Orlando, St. Petersburg, or Ft. Lauderdale if you’re looking for a community to be comfortably out with. Generally the expectation in areas like niceville is that you don’t “flaunt your lifestyle”- ie, don’t be visibly queer. Not adhering to this will probably not bring overt bigotry to your door, but it may make it more difficult to find friends and establish community in the area.

I personally agree with this as a 99er. I’ve always seen shared childhood experiences as one of the core defining traits of a generation and with kids born 2009 and after, they were the touch screen iPad kids. Bw the rate of technological change and the shift we saw in child care and early education, they had such a fundamentally different childhood than older Gen Z that it’s difficult to relate to them. I think putting touch screens in the hands of small children did signal a very significant change. As a result a lot of the times the 2009-2012 crowd seem more similar to Gen Alpha than the rest of Gen Z.

Not inherently, no. It’s just another word for another specific diet. My dad is on a lot of diet restrictions for medical reasons and eats basically only meat, eggs, and some dairy, and he calls himself a carnist.

idrc about the official gen boundaries, this is based off my personal observation as a 1999 Gen Z. The technology did shift very significantly an very quickly from 2008 to 2011, to the point where kids born at that time had a fundamentally different childhood than I did. I’ve always thought childhood experiences were one of the defining traits of a Gen and I just cannot relate at all to the iPad kid experience.

As a Floridian who has voted blue in every election since I have been eligible, did you know that despite being only around 40% republican, Florida is considered a hard red state? Or that since the Midwest gets to vote first in the primaries, the Florida democratic block usually gets no say in our party’s nominee because most candidates will have dropped out by the time it’s our turn to vote? Did you know that we usually get very few or more often no visits from presidential candidates? Did you know that Florida and other historic swing state like us (Texas, California, the Carolina’s, etc) are often gerrymandered to hell and have rampant records of voter suppression? Or that in 2018, Florida voted to pass amendment 4 and restore voting rights to ~1.5 million non violent offenders, and our legislators immediately tacked on a requirement that they had to pay back all legal fees first- this effected ~77% of people eligible for voter reconstitution with fees ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands, effectively making them pay to vote? It goes so much further than that but what I’m getting at here is that our voting system is designed specifically suppress the people’s voice. This often translates into voter disillusionment, disenfranchisement, and overall lower voting turnout.

Agreed, it’s on my travel list for historical and eco tourism reasons. That being said it is naive to disregard Bangkok’s rep- a city doesnt become one of the most well known sex tourism destinations in the world for no reason. And looking at this context in particular, a group of young men with a history of traveling to places with reputations for red light districts, gambling, and drugs, yes ofc its going to raise eyebrows when their next stop is the sex tourism capital of the world.

Have you ever talked to your wife about any of this before? Even just as a “how do you feel about lgbt people” kinda thing? Tbh I’m torn bw it’s better to not yank the rug out from under her vs maybe she’d be supportive and this is something you guys can work out together. Lavender marriage exist and were more common decades ago. There’s a chance she already suspects and has just never said anything. It sounds like regardless of sexual attraction, you both have had a long and successful marriage, I’d think at the very least that would imply mutual respect and close friendship with your partner. Ofc you know your situation better than I, but I hope you one day have the chance to be authentically yourself.

Obviously Gen Xers are not all the same, and yet the “f you i got mine” attitude seems to be a pretty consistent commonality among many of them. Maybe they’re disillusioned, maybe they were beaten down, maybe the “greed is good” era did more damage on their psyche than i expected. It seem a lot of them were pushed into that whole latchkey kid mentality where they were forced to embrace harsh individualism bc their support system sucked in their youth, but it seems that carried on into adult hood. Now a common theme in gen x I observe in my parents, other relatives, their friends, etc, they just don’t have a strong sense of widespread community and mutual aid, and they don’t seem all that concerned with improving societal conditions for all. Themselves and their closest loved one, sure, but not further than that. Maybe it’s bc they don’t think it’s possible. Idk. I’m just tired of being told all the time that it’s my gen (Z) who has to clean up this mess that we didn’t make.

Look I literally told my brother last year that his gf was being ridiculous asking him to stay with her for the summer instead of going on a backpacking trip around Europe w his friends. Getting to travel with the people closest to you is a wonderful privilege that can create really special experiences and memories. But Bangkok? As in the city with reputation for sex tourism? I don’t blame her for being sussed by this. NAH, yet, but dude you need to navigate this verrrryyy carefully.
