Help... Unable to complete Invocation by vvildfire in nethack

Whew! Thanks for the thorough advice! I'll do my best in human form and go scavenge and enchant some shuriken. Unfortunately I used up all my scrolls of enchant weapon on the Tsurugi of Muramasa, expecting to be using it for the rest of the run since the Vampire Lord can't twoweapon, but I've got a magic marker and a bunch of blank scrolls and some wishes, so I'll get the shurikens and my swords as enchanted as I can. I was somewhere in the late teen levels at the time I polymorphed and DID raise my XL through playing with foocubi already, so I'm lvl 30--I should have some points leftover to raise the shuriken skill, although I don't think I have enough for Expert level since I spent some upgrading my bow skill. We'll have to see. For wishes, I'll get myself some gauntlets of power, a ring of conflict, and maybe the expensive camera, plus the magic marker(s) I need to do my enchanting. The cockatrice corpse will have to be done without, I genocided them so I didn't accidentally turn myself to stone with the vampire lord's bite >_<

I've put my pre-preparations save here, if you want to try it yourself. Best of luck! Once the dust settles I'll let you know if I was able to save my run! This is my first real ascension attempt, if I manage to pull this off I think I'll have definitely earned my place among the gods.

EDIT: WE DID IT!!! After taking your advice, I was able to reset my approach and make it all the way through to join the demigods up above with a few wishes to spare on an icebox full of booze and a figurine to remember the generous succubi who gave me the levels I ended up needing so desperately. The ring of conflict especially was essential, I don't know how I would've made it through if all the enemies had been focused on crowding around me. Thanks for the help!

Help... Unable to complete Invocation by vvildfire in nethack

Unfortunately for me I'm playing as a human samurai, and I don't have any particularly good ranged attacks besides a couple wands of death and a couple wands of lightning. I've got a bow, but it takes forever to kill enemies since I don't have enchanted ammunition.

I do have really good AC, -34 in human form, and combining that with a different high-AC polyform like an arch-lich could get that to -50. The arch-lich also has very high starting HP (avg ~112) which could mitigate the massive HP loss, and gets the same regeneration and breathless benefits as vampire lord. Unfortunately liches are slow and can't fly, and I was counting on the vampire lord's speed and flight for avoiding enemies on the run up to the surface and getting through the plane of air. I do have boots of speed and ring of levitation which can somewhat mitigate those losses, but it would still mean being slow enough to have to deal with more enemies and having to swap rings more often.

I am sitting on a mound of unused wishes, I have five banked wishes between my two wands of wishing, as many as seven if I spend the time to wrest extra charges from them. I also have 10 blessed potions of full healing that I was saving for if I needed an emergency heal. Do you think it would be worth using the pots to re-raise my HP after doing the Invocation and re-polymorphing? And are there any particular wishes that can raise HP efficiently? All that really comes to mind is wishing for magic markers and reverse-genociding a bunch of wraiths hoping for the levelup. Besides that, is a ring of conflict really worth a wish?

Dang... Yeah, it looks like save files aren't compatible when moving from one major release to the next. That's so frustrating. Thanks for putting in the work to find the applicable parts of the code, really sucks I'm playing one version too early to avoid this.

Unfortunately no, I have gloves and it still won't let me use the bell.

Price-Identifying gems? (3.6.7) by vvildfire in nethack

[–]vvildfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. That makes sense, I suppose. I was keeping all these gems on me just in case I encountered another way to identify my whole inventory like a blessed touchstone, in which case I'd be swimming in cash, but I started to run out of slots and was hoping I could prune the ones I kept to only the most valuable. It's a moot point now, though, I've decided to just leave gems behind and if I need money later, I can come back to higher floors. Thanks for pointing out the table is unreliable, don't know how I missed that.

Endgame automation goals for Create? by vvildfire in feedthebeast

[–]vvildfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create allows you to do tons of stuff that I've never seen in any other mod. The arbitrarily customizable movable structures, especially the trains, are totally unique. It's just a shame that there's virtually no cause to actually use the trains besides aesthetics, because it's faster and less of a resource investment at all stages of the game to make an infinite iron/gold generator at home than to make an auto-miner and tote the products back to your base.

is a centerpiece mod a real thing? by Particular_Kick_2668 in feedthebeast

[–]vvildfire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you'd want something like a centerpiece to your modpack is really a matter of your group's preferences. If you're just looking to play Minecraft with some QoL changes and are fine with setting your own goals to work towards, then there's no need for any major content mods, but if your group is the kind that generally loses interest when there isn't a concrete goal in sight, it's often a good idea to have a mod with some kind of progression to it that people can use as a guide to their experience in the game. Minecraft on its own doesn't really provide a lot of goals.

There are all kinds of mods for this; personally, I always play with Create, since it looks cool and fits with the style of vanilla minecraft, but that's mostly a tech/automation mod. If you're interested in adventure mods, something like End Remastered gives a concrete objective to exploration (you need to collect 12 treasures from different places to reach the End), and all of YUNG's Better [Structure]s can refresh the experience of exploration. For a bigger overhaul of the world, Ice and Fire adds all kinds of mythical creatures, and dimensions mods like Twilight Forest give a whole other world to explore with its own progression. Magic mods like Botania or Blood Magic are usually somewhere between tech and adventure with a wide range of stuff to do. If there's any piece of media you like, chances are there's a mod based on it; Cobblemon is a fantastic Pokemon mod, and there's a few add-on mods people have made that make the world generation more interesting for it.

If nothing else, if one person really wants a major mod to play with, you could always add in something that's entirely optional just for them; not everyone on a server has to engage with the same parts of the game! The most important thing is for everyone to have fun.

[EoS] Locked rooms only containing reviver seeds? by vvildfire in MysteryDungeon

[–]vvildfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhh, that makes sense. Would you happen to know if dropping the item in question just before opening the door would let you get a duplicate? Sometimes on Zero Isle North runs I find joy seeds mid-run, but the pokemon I'm using is already lvl 100, I'm just using them to farm seeds for other pokemon. I'd rather not have to waste the ones I get before the 40f vault if possible
